    This summer was brutal for us in the transition zone. I've got a couple patches that are dead, but overall grass looking better than previous years as my established grass is strong and I was really on top of my fungicide.
    I will definitely be dethatching not just the areas of dead grass, but the entire lawn as there is definitely dead strains of fescue in the greener sections. Also going to be aerating.

    Very timely for me. I am in process of killing some spots (bermuda / POA etc..) with plans on re-seeding in Mid Sept. (In DE) and I have been wondering exactly this! Was / may still be planning to rack like this in a couple days, just before my next Fungus app.

    I tend to dethatch my tttf once a year even though most people say not too bc the summer beats it up and over the years I’ve realized it helps with disease too. Before I dethatched I constantly struggled with Pythium where the dead grass under the good grass would be super slimy and caked together and would start wiping out large areas of my lawn. Dethatching really has made a huge difference when it comes to pythium for me (also apply mefenoxam
    After dethatching). Biggest word of advice is to use a good amount of liquid kelp and humic acid after dethatching to help it repair from all the stress.

    Grass has to hit the dirt! I have a tow behind cheap dethatcher that does the job for me. I don't have the horsepower myself anymore so I improvise. Will start all of mine at the end of the month when I hit 67. Dethatch-aerate-seed-and light dressing of leafgro. Will try some granular hydretain to assist with keep the seed wet also. Been a nasty year for everyone [ I'm just south of Baltimore] with another tropical storm setting it's sights maybe on us again. Moreso than anything just pray for those in the path. I used Green County 0-0-25 right before we got 3-4 inches of rain. Amazing bounce back. Cutting twice a week instead of once every two weeks.
    Half of my backyard looks like your ditch area. I plan on Sunjoe dethatching the area about a week before seeding. I'm not worried about weeds. I learned enough about killing weeds in 7-8 years cross that bridge next year.

I was thinking about going with Solar Green or Dense Shade for my yard this year and seeing this massive dead spot on the bank scares me! I also have a very large slope, much bigger than yours, and a ton more shade. What caused the massive dead spot this time? Thanks for your help!

  • @mooch91

    Looks like you exposed quite a bit of soil, and I hope it works for you. My experience? Unless you scalp it down very low, the remaining dead grass will tend to lay over and mat on top of your seed when it gets wet, preventing complete germination. Others will say that the remaining dead grass provides a nice cover (sort of like straw/hay) to keep the moisture in.

  • @MahjikM3
    @MahjikM3 Před měsícem

    I would use this time to use some Ornamec on that Bermuda coming back since you aren't re-seeding yet. I typically do not prep the ground (remove dead grass) until I'm read to seed. In my experience, it invites weeds that delay me from seeding. That being said, I believe the comments you were referring to about "thatch" were likely around people not referring to thatch as "recently deceased grass". Thatch is typically referred to a layer of organic material (some of which is dead grass) that is on top of the soil. With that, I don't believe the person you were discussing with was saying not to remove the recently deceased grass.

  • @Sir_Mack
    @Sir_Mack Před měsícem +1

    I would definitely leave the dead grass there until right at time of seeding. Other factors come into play now that the soil is exposed. Birds can bring in weed seeds, and that matted down dead grass was definitely acting as a preventative barrier for anything that was already in the ground.

    I don't want any POA in my TTF. You might be on to something about exposing POA seeds. To start off because of my suspicion too, I'm using liquid dethatch every 3 weeks when temps are 85+ and above to digest any excess, prior to the overseeding process and any raking dethatch/ aeration. I'll contuine to use Ethofumesate to help control it. I'll watch your experiment.

    You may get some weeds, but it’s nothing that an herbicide can’t get rid of. Plus, I actually think the good grass that is in the patch you raked will now come back stronger. It was being suffocated by the dead grass. Now it will receive more oxygen, sunlight, and nutrients.

      I'm very excited to hopefully have a plush yard, I dont need a yard of the month or anything like that but I'm very tired of having a crappy yard.
      From yards away it does not look too bad but that is because I have mostly weeds and crab grass.

      @@bobbyhunt3009 Contact your local University extension in your state / county and ask them how you should go about performing a soil test first. The university will provide you results based on a Melich-3 testing calibrated and correlated soil metrics. You will want to look at the pH result of your soil and the ppm values of nutrients like Potassium and Phosphorous. The university will make recommendations on your report reflecting what you might need to apply moving forward based on nutrient sustainability. Stay away from non-university related soil labs. MySoil is one of them. They will make recommendations based on a debunked "Base Cation Saturation" value which will end up costing you hundreds of dollars on wasteful fertilizers and non-validated bio-stimulants that you might not even need- if ever. University turf science departments are the most reliable labs for soil testing. They will only recommend what the soil needs to sustain itself.

    idk what that commenter was thinking. All cool season grasses should be dethatched. As for him saying not TTTF, @LawnAmateur does it every time before he overseeds. I have TTTF in my backyard & perennial rye in my front, gonna be dethatching my backyard, & scarifying the front. Scarifying the front bc there are more bare areas that il be seeding & overseeding.
    As for your question, I would think the more likely you open up your soil & wait, more chance weeds will pop up.

    You're NOT supposed to dethatch TTTF. It's a plant, when you dethatch TTTF you're stressing it out far beyond what's necessary. There are tons of articles about it. Ask anyone with a degree in horticulture or who aerates lawns. The people who are actual professionals will tell you the truth.
    Of course if you have dead areas you're supposed to rake it out first.

    I understand wanting to dethatch the lawn, but I've been learning that since tttf is a bunch style of grass it doesn't need to be dethatched. That being said, power raking is helpful to get rid of that dead grass underneath to allow more air to pass through the turf.
