If I recall Clark Kent was issued as a Mail away offer along with a wearable plastic Superman cape in 1986. Truly cool pieces for the time.
Thanks again for taking my request. I truly appreciate you putting the time in to research and record this! I knew a lot going in but was glad to learn quite a few things I hadn't known before. Glad to see Zach get to share his knowledge and Robert. I am from Cincinnati and remember going by the Kenner plant as a kid. Company's long gone sadly. I really hope this one gets a lot of views. I've shared it with quite a few toy collector friends.
For a batman figure fan that grew up with these figures, this is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched. I love this
I was one of those kids who demanded screen accuracy.☺️
When Batman Returns rolled around the only Batman figure I could get from Toy’s R Us was Artic Batman.😣
The regular Batman from that line wasn't even screen accurate. It was just a reissue of the mold from the Dark Knight collection line with the sculpted abs. Only the 12-inch figure was accurate to the film costume.

Yo thanks for the shout out! Excellent listen and great joker voice Zach! 👌
Thank you very much!
You didn't create any of that artwork. You are not the artist.
So excited!!! I love your guys podcasts, and I binge on them every weekend while I'm road-tripping.
The Dark Knight Collection Sonic Blaster is different to the Batarang Gun, the Batarang was on a figure blister pack, the Sonic Blaster was in a large box and is a Star Wars repaint.
The first Mego figures had detachable cowls to reveal a Bruce Wayne head but they were quickly changed as children lost the detachable cowls.
The golden Super Powers card variants were actually Toy Biz figures, they used lots of the same molds for their line.
This is a fantastic blast from the past! Even when I listening it via podcast while driving, I could vividly recall every single one of the figures mentioned! I do have to defend that Mr. Freeze figure, though. Not because it was a good figure, mind you, but because I have fond memories of popping off the helmet, repainting the body, slapping some Silly Putty on his head, wrapping the head in cellophane, and drawing a face on it so I could make my own Clayface III!
That's actually a pretty ingenious way to take advantage of Mr. Freeze's helmet!
I love the Kenner Batman figures from the Burton movies and the Animated Series. I had loads of Batman toys when I was a kid and had lost of fun with them. I have Powerwing Batman, The 15 inch Batman Returns Ultimate Batman figure (My favorite), Bruce Wayne as Batman, Catwoman, Combat Belt Batman, Robin, and many more.
ToyBiz and Kenner really dropped the ball with Batman's enemies for the '89 film. Along with Bob, they could have made action figures of the big bald guy with the Fu Manchu mustache (Lawrence), the martial arts guy with the swords, and the black guy who Batman fights in the cathedral. Kenner also failed with the Batman Returns line - should have released figures of the Red Triangle Circus Gang. Would have made great figures and foes for Batman, especially the giant skull motorcyclist.
Yeah! Too many Bat Variants but no villains to fight!
@@Pauric84 At least ToyBiz gave us Bob. Kenner only gave us the Joker.
Actually, the packaging art for the Super Powers line was done by Jose Garcia Lopez, not Neal Adams -- Lopez was the go-to guy for DC's merchandising promotions during this period. But it's great to revisit these toys, regardless.
My order for 2 funskool batman action figures 1993 are coming this friday 17th september...when i was 14 years old i always wanted these batman action figures now im 27 the kid hasn't gone anywhere..i miss the old days.
I actually saw the robin dragster once or twice as a kid in the toy store at a mall in New York. I remember wanting it. The next time I went to the toy store to get it I never saw it in the stores anymore.
Thanks for your comment. The Joker himself replied to this in our latest episode: czcams.com/video/fl06sz2mnUY/video.html

Actually, this version of the play set in the picture was never released officially. The first official release was the Batman Returns variant.

1st vehicle: Batwing
2nd vehicle: hang glider
3rd vehicle: three wheeled car
This is a really cool idea for an episode! Great timing too. I just recently got back in to collecting the Dark Knight Collection and hearing you guys going in depth was just what I needed lol.
Btw, Deep Dive Batman is a bad a** 👍
Looking forward to this !
My batcave n Batman were my favorite toys of all time.. breaking thru the windows n grappling on it
I've been looking for a history of kenner batman for a while!!! So happy I found this. It's like the mwfp about WWF ljn and hasbro!!
At 1:34:35, you guys say that the retro Batman doesn't appear in the movie, but he actually appears for a few seconds in the flashback where Batman puts his mask for the first time ever in the batcave and Alfred is terrified. Play that scene again and you'll see Batman's belt and gloves are different. ;)
Nice! Does it actually show his different chest symbol?
@@zacharyjacksonbrownart7965 No, but you can clearly see the belt is different when he is putting it as well as the gloves which don't have the spikes. It's on the 35:40 mark.
Incredible video, guys! There is one figure from 1989 that I don't recall seeing in the video, though... the 1989 Riddler figure from Toy Biz's "DC Comics Super Heroes" line that I believe premiered along side the Batman 89 figure line. I was so excited to get this figure at the time because I had been a big fan of the Super Powers figures but there was never a Riddler in that line. I also don't recall seeing the 1989 Bat Cave from Toy Biz. I never had the Wayne Manor playset but I loooooooved this Bat Cave.
I had the first Batman 89 Batman and my brother had the Joker. I used its extendable belt to hang him from a pole in my closet. Sadly he got loose and fell, when he hit the floor its head broke clean off, I was so sad my brother threw his Joker to the floor and it broke like glass. These figures were really delicate! And cheaply made lol. The Batman Return ones were much better!

Great video guys. Very thorough. Heads up, there was a Grey Ghost figure done for the Justice League Unlimited action figure toy line.
I wonder if that was Mattel by then or still Hasbro?
They had a comics sketchbook that's a companion piece to an elseworlds book
Hi guys! I’m a new subscriber. This two-part podcast is great, really enjoyable - especially to those who grew up during this era and enjoyed these toy iterations. Some feedback: you four guys work well together as hosts - please can you consider a series of similar episodes reviewing other Batman memorabilia and merch, including films, cartoons, comics, and later toy lines. Thanks!
I have a question for you guys: Which chest symbol to you prefer, oval or black bat?
If it’s grey suited Batman I prefer the black bat, but if it’s black suited Batman I think the yellow oval looks better. It pops.
I think I’ll always prefer the yellow oval. It’s iconic.
Mego is pronounced "Mee-go". As for Clark Kent, a limited number of his figures were produced as he was a mail-in figure. Yes, I mailed in the required proof of purchase to get mine, lol. Also; Supergirl and Batgirl were rumored future Super Powers figures.
Yeh, that was addressed in the video so I don't know why you're running your mouth about it.
I remember spending a lot on the BTAS Batman variants by Funskool India. There were a lot of variants back then. This is back in 2001 & 2002.
Even as a kid I was like: that's a snazzy turtleneck on Bruce. I always figured that's what he wore around the batcave, or just as the under layer of his costume.
Thanks for the comment. We replied to this in our latest episode: czcams.com/video/-clI9a8SjPU/video.html
@@SuperHousePodcast Great episode!
Hated finding all the variant Batmans when I desperately wanted more villains for him to fight.
The Superman returns figure came with a cloth suit, shoes and a wig with attached glasses.
The boat from Louisiana that you were thinking of is not called a fanboat, it's called an Airboat
The super heroes Robin had a yellow button instead of squeezing the legs.
Nice. My favorite figures are 1990 crime attack Batman/Power Wing Batman with iron winch accessory, 1993 combat belt Batman, 95 power beacon Batman, guardians of Gotham Batman, Cloontang Batman the redscan Kodak mail away repaint, looks good sliding down the back of my Megatron. Yeah that Kenner Batwing does turn into a clip on wing glider for Batsy. Do you know how many head variants there are for quick change Bruce Wayne? Is it 3 or 4? Or more? I've got 2 1990 black shirt version head sculpt variants, one with a slimmer face, which is similar to the purple shirt version but I'm pretty sure it's different, also the Returns version is different, I dunno if it's over used moulding process but he's missing ear detailing, under the jaw and chin look different too. I've only got 2 of the 1990 variants loose & one boxed, yeah Firebolt Batman you squeeze his legs together his arm raises up. pretty cool figure, the one with Catwoman has a different face paint color, wish Kenner made a Boss Carl Grissom Vicky Vale and Max Shrek figures. Shadow wing Batman is pretty cool too, especially since they got the 89 chest sculpt armor right, if you compare shadow wing Batman with Crime Attack Batman/Powerwing Batman, you'll notice on the side of the torso is kinda squared off, like a sharp kinda edge corner instead of rounded off. Thunder Whip Batman is cool too it has the 89 sculpted gauntlets like quick change and shadow wing, the returns version has a clear coat that flakes off so I prefer the 90s version, cool if you have the Returns version in mint though. Arctic Batman was my first Batman. The gold really stands out on his white plastic really bright unlike the gold painted on Black. I had the gold ice blaster variant instead of the Black version.. you guys seem pretty cool. Like minded. If you guys have time, check this out? It's a short half assed Kenner Batman stopmotion you might appreciate? If not allgood I totally understand if you wanna delete this. Have a good one. From one Batman Kenner Fan in New Zealand. I'm not trying to push my own work I swear. 🦇

I would've LOVED a Clark Kent figure to go with my Superman! I've always been a fan of those secret identity figures!
The plastic ring in the cape always broke on mine and everyone I knew had the 1989 Batman figure and every one, the string would come undone and get lost in his stomach forever. I had the painted head version but the paint worn off.
Thanks for the comment. We replied to this in our latest episode: czcams.com/video/-clI9a8SjPU/video.html
I had the Clarke Kent, it was a mail-in figure.
While the Kenner Batmobile was far more screen-accurate than the Toy Biz version, the TB Batwing was actually more accurate to the movie than the Kenner version. (It really didn't need that detachable pod gimmick.
The problem with the Dark Knight Collection is that there weren't enough villains. Just the Joker and no one else. (At least the Toy Biz line had Bob.) The line really would have benefited from having some of Joker's goons for Batman to fight.
I have fair amount of the Toy Biz SuperHeroes line. There are a lot more heroes than mentioned, all of them derivitive of the Super Powers versions. Aside from Flash and Robin, there's Hawkman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and I believe Aquaman as well (though I don't have that one).
I had the sonic blaster but I also had a dart gun that was very screen accurate to the grappling gun used in batman 89. I loved the blue batman suit too. One of my faves cause it went with the batcycle. Also, what about the Joker van? That was great. The second Joker figure his face changed to be flesh color in water, opposite of the film. Lol... and can we talk about Jack Nicholson's friend, who played Bob the goon got a screen accurate figure lol and deep dive batman was awesome. I'm certified and It was one of my favorite figures. I used hum in the batsewer ski vehicle that was used in the film...
Should do one of these for the Mattel Batman figures.
The Super Powers Clark Kent was produced, it ended up being a mail-away figure...
Luckily Robert corrected me during the episode. The Super Powers line was a little before my time, so I’m glad he was more familiar with it.
gentlemen, I'm the same bat freak as you! only broke.
The only toy line this extensive has been Star Wars
The only superpowers figures I own are Batman & robin sitting in the superpowers batmobile and that Clark Kent is sitting on the hood at the moment!
Where can we get that quick change Bruce Wayne shirt?
Ben got it off TeePublic. The specific link, unfortunately, doesn't seem to exist, but I'm sure you can find it from other sites like TeePublic or RedBubble where fans have made them available.
I used to have that figure, it was so cool back then.
I had the super powers penguin. But I took it to school and someone stole it
That 1990 joker cycle is recycled from originally the 1988 robocop ultra police line😁
Thanks for this. We replied to this comment in our latest episode: czcams.com/video/awJ8FbP4KQE/video.html
@@SuperHousePodcast omg 😱... didn't even know u did another video...gonna look now 🙏
My love affair with Batman started with Tim burton movies and also prince becuz he did some songs in the film
That two face is a toybiz figure
Mego was the first batgirl and they made bruce wayne figures in mego
So many awesome inaccurate facts Thanks
Clark Kent was a mailaway
The penguin was a lazy design.
Kenner was lazy in general, constantly reusing the same molds.
@@dreamlandnightmare kenners Michael Keaton was way better then Toy Biz Michael Keaton. Toy Biz stopped making Batman after one year of making them bc their molds were so bad. Thats why Kenner took over and remade the 1989 Batman movie figures.
Sorry Logan, but you didn't create any of that artwork.
Toy Biz figures were lame!
I disagree.
Collection of reasons why bad movies cant be significant. This Toys destroyed Batman movies.
