Well I had a friend who served he told me some stories he only said once never asked him stuff or to repeat if I forgot cuz I know it was a touchy subject. I loved talking to him. My family, ROTC, a friend and nieghbor of mine who was a marine and my friend tought me to not take shit from some people who are just assholes.
Did you hear? DOD is prepping to permanently disqualify anybody with the virus. Those diagnosed will be able to pursue a waiver.
A lot of people get turned off by the fact that Jarhead doesn't have much action, but I think that's what makes it such an interesting war movie.
It was Desert Storm. There wasn't much action. Swofford got more than most.

We had private "Gay" in my platoon in Army basic. (Yes his last name was literally "Gay"). I still remember when we arrived at reception and a DS was calling out role, all of a sudden hes like "private........huh huh....Gay?"
I was an art major in college before joining the Army, and in down time before we hit the rack, I would do drawings for people. Everyone had drawings from me in their footlocker. One of our DS's finally got curious and asked where these were coming from when doing an inspection and like that scene in Forrest Gump I just hear the DS bellow my name from the other side of the barracks, I ran my ass off stood at at attention and he just goes WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IN THE ARMY?! Then he made me draw his portrait while I was on fire watch.

The questions in boot camp where there's no right answer. You have a split second to ponder what you're about to answer back, and realize there is no right answer and you're going to get thrashed.
You immediately start thinking, "I'm fucked" when you suddenly realize the Drill Instructor is yelling because you haven't said anything.

We had a recruit with a Russian last name. His last name had about 13 letters to it with only 2 vowels. The Drill Instructor tried to read it and started yelling “how the hell do you pronounce a last name this long with two damn vowels?” My real last name is De Guimera, ironically my father during Vietnam era and I both got the nick name Alphabet.
I remember a guy in Air Force basic was Laotian and his name had more letters than the name tape letter size at the time allowed. So his last name was literally cut off by a few letters. He took it in stride.
We also had two Ukrainians and a South African the South African was a white Afrikaner and we happened to have a missionary's son who had lived in South Africa and they could both speak Afrikaans. One black guy used to joke "ain't this some Sh** I finally meet someone from Africa and he's a white boy".
We had a guy show up that had a long last name, we called him "G13".

I have a family friend who is a D.I. who absolutely loves his job, and he says "My job is to make boot camp the toughest experience I can for them, so any enemies are a cake walk" and when he said it like that, I gained so much more respect for Drill instructors.
He's absolutely correct, and it serves you your entire life. People yelling about things simply doesn't phase you after that experience. Most people are amateurs

Even Anthony Swofford, he wrote the book the movie is based on, came out and said much of the film from basic through scout sniper school to their initial arrival for Desert Shield, was fabricated and never happened.
I read the book, there actually was a situation with a physically violent drill instructor who actually was reprimanded and removed from his position because of how he treated recruits. I think this was meant as an approximation, if anything the real story was crazier

My SDI got pulled after hitting someone. This was after my cycle but I was stationed on the same base so I heard about it. I was actually surprised. We had DIs I could see that happening to but the SDI was pretty chill with us.
My Senior DI was from a small town less than 10 miles from where I grew up. Made me very popular with the other DI’s. I serve one term and got out. The Senior DI retired and moved back home. He started dating a lady I worked with and later married. We got where we hung out couple times a month. One day he asked if I wanted to go get a drink together. I could not resist looked at him and say so you want to be my beer drinking buddy. He just stared at me then broke out laughing

I remember having breakfast with a member of this church I attended. He talked about when his son enlisted he told his dad (also a crayon eater) that DI are not allowed to hit anyone anymore. His dad gave up trying to convince his son that they will put their hands on him. He sent his dad a letter at first opportunity saying "I was wrong, they still do"

I went thru PI in 1963 of course you got hit, later ln life working for a construction company when an irate customer was venting I'd just listen. One day after one of these sessions a fellow worker that had overheard said "how do you take that"?
I sald, "it's easy that guy's an amateur, I've been yelled at by professionals!" And that is one benefit of boot camp that lasts forever. Very little rattles you!

This movie most accurately portrays my experience in the Marine Corps and the military in general, as a grunt. I was scribe as well, they most definitely grabbed us from time to time - that was nothing compared to other things they have in their tool box of fun. Honestly boot camp was easy compared to most of the rest of my time in the Corps. Jody stole my girlfriend multiple times throughout my career, bastard.

Whenever my civilian friends would ask what the most realistic war movie is, I'd always say Jarhead. It perfectly captured the monotony and sheer boredom that comes with deploying.
Also, one of our kill hats shoved a recruit's rifle barrel into his face during drill and caused him to bleed. Said recruit wrote about it to his parents and they contacted MCRD Parris Island and the DI was suspended for the rest of training shortly after. So from my experience (which I understand varies greatly) they absolutely cannot hit or attempt to physically harm you. But the mental games are fucking relentless.

One thing I remember in Boot Camp was you never referred to yourself as I, it was always 'this recruit' or for 3rd battalion it was 'this private'. You got dug for referring to yourself in first person. I also agree with you, I never saw a Drill Instructor with facial hair. I got kicked by the drill instructor in the chest because I wasn't going all the way down on push ups, but I was not going to tell the series commander.

usmc 03retired haha! Yeah, I made that comment when I was still half asleep. I didn’t realize he had said that in 3rd battalion they said “this private”. I can’t really speak to that as I was in 2nd Battalion. But I know in at least 2nd, 4th, and 1st Battalions they say “this recruit” not “this private”. 3rd Battalion has always been a bit odd, although I doubt that even they would break from convention in that way. 🤷♂️
That's true about not talking about it. My Uncle was in Vietnam, and he rarely talked about any of it.
The one time he let on to any of it was when he was talking about being on anesthesia. He said it knocks him out so badly he couldn't suppress the memories. It's the only time I've ever seen the man cry.
My dad was telling me how his drill sergeant asked if anyone thought they could take him in a fight and one small guy raised his hand. He said the kid got one of the worst beatings he’s ever seen
Before Boot Camp I had never been in a fight. My senior Drill Instructor took me into the gear locker and beat the crap out of me. He called it "counseling" . I'll never forget that day as long as I live. Plt. 161, Parris Island 1976. Semper Fi

The movie got silly when they depicted the 7th Marines as screw ups in the Gulf. My unit trained with them over there in early '91 and they were pretty locked in.

My father served two tours in the Army during Nam! His 2nd tour he was in Grave Registration. He told me about removing drugs from off dead soldiers bodies, so there wouldn't be a question as to how they died. He would only go so far, when I would ask questions, before he would start yelling and screaming at me, asking why I always wanted to ask about Vietnam. It always ended there, he would never go beyond that! After awhile, I stopped asking about I realized, he didn't want to relive the things he saw, preparing dead bodies to be returned back State Side!

My first day of BC, our CC was yelling for a recruit to get out of bed who refused, the CC flipped over the bunk with him in it and it completely broke the recruit's femur. Recruit was medically discharged and the CC was "advised" to take a couple of weeks off, haha.

When I served in the paratroopers (83/84) our drill instructors were using pushups as the main "tool" for imposing discipline. We did do the ones with the slaps, but it was more something we used to do within ourselves to show off on who was the toughest mofo, and they were for more "advanced" rookies. But there was a "ritual" where the instructor was commanding pushups with:
-"..get on the ground and give me (let's say) 50 soldier"...
so you dive to the ground and started "pumping" (as we used to call it)...
after a bit, when he was noticing that you were already in"pain", the instructor asked you:
-"how many did you do?"...
so you say how many, whatever the number was... and then he replied:-
-"wrong..a paratrooper NEVER count the pushups...start from scratch..."
so you started again..after a while, he will ask you again..." how many?"
So you were left with only 2 answers possible...
-" I don't know" or "I did not count them, sir..."
And he... -"wrong...a paratrooper ALWAYS knows what da f*ck he's doing...start from scratch"...
HAHAHAHAHA only after few times of this ritual you were given the correct answer which was:
-"..how many?"...
-"One more than the devil and one less than the drill instructor"... hahaha.
it seems so stupid back then, but after all these years I still laugh if I think about it.

Marine drill instructors are sadists. We had to do squat jumps and push-ups for punishment. Squat jumps took all the energy and power out of your legs.

My dad went their for basic training fresh out of high school
I went to Army Basic in 2017. One of my favorite memories was when a trainee dropped a fork on the floor in the DFAC and a DS made him get on his hands and knees and apologize very loudly to the floor for several minutes.
Yea Jody was introduced me when I was trying to qualify with my weapon. DS said jody is in them gutts, and that target is Jody. I shot the hell out of that target.
I appreciate how boring this movie is rather then acting like guys are constantly out there fighting like most. The uniforms are also pretty accurate after I googled around a bit so I appreciate that too.
His depiction of his time overseas is the most accurate of any movie I've ever seen, long periods of boredom.
From the book the drill instructor was actually relieved from the class.
My coach in school was a former drill instructor so he made us do military exercises every day in class, it was rigorous and tough but man was i in good shape.
Ex Australian Army and "Rookies" was so fast paced I had no idea what happened a week out of Marching Out Parade but I can remember more 32 years later.
The nicknames that the Drill Instructors give to recruits is always hilarious. I went thru PI in 1987. My last name is Summa so my nickname was Recruit Sewage. Lol. One of the hardest things is fighting the laughter when they call you or other recruits such nicknames. If they catch you laughing or smirking it’s over. Lmfao. Semper Fi

I never did pushups with "The Clap" but my buddy Hanson did. The Corpsman punched his bore and gave him some penicillin and that was the last of that.
Im so sad he never finished the last scene, he stopped right before the dude was tied down by his unit and branded with an iron. Woulda been interesting to hear his thought on that!

remember years later walking with a group of guys from my unit. just walking and talking when i noticed we were all in step again. all that time apart and it was instant the sound of our heel clicking again. it was kinda funny doing anything to try and break that up only to have it shift almost instantly after a few steps.
Man I can see the DI knowing about his father. I got called into my Captains office 2 weeks into basic and I was shitting a brick. Turns out the Capt knew my father from Vietnam and he had my father on the phone then my father yelled at me from the speaker telling me to beat my face. OMG. Then the drill pounded me when we got back for 20 min

@@JeffrikOG9 I had a friend at a job who was former Air Force. So all summer before I went in I would pick his brain and he had me well coached up. Biggest thing I learned from him: when they ask for volunteers, always be in the 1st group. It is usually the best detail.
But even with all his advice there were a few things here and there I wasn't expecting. AF basic training is nothing more than a giant mind fuck anyway.

Interesting fact . My great grandfather was in the Italian army and served during WW1 fought against the Germans. After the war immediately immigrated to the USA 🇺🇸 . Grandpa was in the American army (drafted right after graduating college) sent to France got pneumonia and basically had a shit time . No Vietnam vets in the family at least not that I know of !.

Dude, I was 245 lbs when I signed up, like size 42 pants, XXXL shirts. My recruiters had me going to the gym every day until I could make weight at MEPs. I made it through boot camp and came out at 160 lbs, give or take a few.

@@rusty7984 Keep it up! trust me, make it through boot camp you'll be well below 200 and in great shape, especially if you take it up on your own to do pushups, situps, etc. on what little time you have to yourself. Had one guy in my platoon who was fairly small and weak, could barely do pullups. Took it upon himself to do 100 pushups every night plus other things. By the last weeks of boot camp this dude was doing the 20 pullups like it was nothing.

Nice for me I don’t really struggle with any exercise except the running not even cardio just running pull ups to bit as soon as the weight comes off I’ll be hitting at least 6-7 pull ups but now I’m running 3 miles at a 10-11 minute miles pace trying to get it down to 28 by June then 24 for boot camp other than that I feel pretty confident about mostly everything
You can really see a difference between countries here, in the bootcamp here in Norway the amount of stuff you will get thrown at you is different between each drill instructor, some are really kind actually and try to encourage rather than yell at you, but there are also the assholes, I had one of those. My DI was a woman and I have no problem with that but I really felt like I was being harrassed personaly and I didn't even want to be there but boys are obligated to do the one year, I even told them that I had anger management issues and that I didn't like being yelled at, all I got back was ¨We are gonna fix you don't worry¨. It didn't go as well as they thought, I was put in the medic platoon and there its almost all girls you train alongside and those girls were mean to me all the time, filling my boots with cow shit and the like, they never got in trouble for it but if I ever did one little thing I got in trouble for it.
Fair right? So one day our DI had the mind of making my days even more hell and well she laid her hands on me for the first time, I almost broke her arm then and there and she got really scared, I had endured 3 weeks of badmouthing up to that point, I got sent up to the colonels office and he straight out apologized for how I was treated and I got the option to go home which I took, my platoon was also reprimanded for everything they did to me, the colonel had actually been keeping tabs on everything and he could see I was about to explode so he was a standup guy and I went home to get on with my life, thats my experience with the military.
Personaly I think its a waste of time, especialy for someone like me as they tell you ¨We are going to break you and build you back up¨, that doesn't work in my experience it jsut pisses people off and someone will get hurt.

If only society didnt look down on men "asserting domination" physically when things get crazy then maybe women wouldnt be so crazy. Lol but thats just my opinion. Dont give a reason to be hit. When I was a recruit the DIs would occasionally ask recruits questions that would reveal personal shit so he might have known that Schrawford's dad was in Vietnam. For example, when we got on the yellow footprints one guy stood on them backward. I didn't see it, of course, eyes front. But I heard the commotion. Finally, one DI asked the recruit if he was an officer. The dumbass responded, "sir no sir, but my father's a colonel." His nickname was the Colonel and that stuck from reiving through graduation. We also had a brain surgeon :). Oh and we didn't have "running shoes," we had "go fasters."
I was in 2010 to 2015. DI's definitely hit a bunch of us on multiple occasions. Recruits threatening suicide, etc, etc. Boot camp is all a mind game. It really isn't all that physically challenging if you can run 3 miles and do pullups. Its the mind games, hunger, sleep deprivation and missing home that gets to you. Overall I have always though this movie is one of the most accurate depictions of life in the Marines. Was never in Iraq but did a tour in Afghanistan. This movie portrays deployment very well.
It was this movie that made me realize how common Jodhi is. It also makes me think of how long he's been around. He may be our real grandad, not the one who came back from WW2.
My experience in 1984, this is pretty close to reality. Things were changing though, different from Viet Nam Era, DI's didn't actually hit you but they still did crazy shit like at Hygene Inspection, you wear your web belt around your neck showing you washed it, if you did something UnSat they would choke you with it trying to breath while reciting your General Orders...or they would take the Squads that fucked up that day in the head and make you Bend and Thrust, Side Stradle Hop for 15min you actually beat the shit out of each other being packed in so tight, if you took a water break before you got permission the DI would make you hit yourself over the head with your canteen until he told you to stop.
Jodie, the language and the way you get spoken to as a Boot in the Fleet(After Boot Camp) you get treated like shit for awhile.
I watched a USMC Boot Camp Documentary a few years ago. Things have changed. The Saddest thing is the Gungy Profane Running Cadences are all gone. Good Memories.

I was in from 78 to 82, and was an 0331, as my MOS. The senior DI, and the other 3 DIs were Vietnam Vets, and believed in the "hands on" approach when dealing with recruits. I had gotten smacked up side the head, choked, and gotten kicked in the ass on a couple of occasions. It didnt mean they had it in for you, it just meant it was your turn that day. This DI seems legit. The language and attitude screams 1970s..lol I did see one recruit lose it, and squared off against a DI once, and got upended and parked on his ass by the DI. We never saw that recruit again. Also, it was never just one DI screaming at you, it was usually a gang affair...
1:55 my big bro was a marine and back in 2000 he told me a DI did say to his buddy who had a pic of his girlfriend "is this your girlfriend!?? (recruit said yes) WRONG! the marine corps is your girlfriend now!!" 🤣🤣🤣

The green description wasn't said in boot when I was there. But heard it later when stationed. Having 1 DI in your face was typical. As for Jodie reference I heard it once and though Jodie was a weird name to begin with. There was some man handling but hitting wasn't or seen rather. SF.

My dad told me stories of his tenure at Parris Lsland in the late 1950s. I didn't believe him until he got around some Marines when he would fly the USMC Ensign from his sailboat mast. It's all true. RIP dad.

My boot camp experience was more aligned with the movie, Full Metal Jacket. They made sure everyone was treated the same. We were choked, hit, one was butt stroked, etc. Lol
In real life he would be on his face pushing immediately after telling his DI he looks fabulous. You have to be crazy to say that. And they never tell you how many to do, they just let you go forever. I was the S1 (scribe) too by the way. We always took way more crap. I guess they wanted to make sure no nerds snuck in without proving ourselves.

i 1'st heard the 2' types of Marines of being light green and dark green in spring of 81' , Jodie goes back to the 60's , our asst DI had a stash , the platoon scribe was the DI's , show off martial art style push up's no , 4' push up's equated to 1'

I had my M16 pushed into my chest by the drill instructor, the instructor called it making an adjustment, I also saw an instructor take down a person in my squad to the ground, and said the person in my squad had his uniformed crooked and he was correcting the malfunction.
The best thing about this movie was how young the guys looked . I do not think any other movie got this correct. I was twenty when i went in. Damn we looked liked babies with our shaved heads.
We had 1 guy in basic training that wanted to fight the drill sergeant so they lined us up around them looking away and we heard him scream and the drill sergeants laugh. Mps came and got him and we never heard anything about him again.
Went thru BCT in 01..... this was as close to how it was for my time. DI’s definitely rough you up if you thought you were high speed. Miss the good ole days

My uncle was in Vietnam, he didn't talk about it much until later in his life, in the couple of years before he passed he talked about it often, didn't embellish it at all and some things he talked fondly about.
