I just love the accurate technical details in that movie! Like how the Engine Mechanic is feeling the bearing Temperatures of the rockers while the other guy is oiling them, how he opens valves to look at the exhaust flames of every cylinder individually, how he uses a Mechanics Stethoscope to listen to an exhaust valve etc.
All very fun. Believable movies are so much more fun.

They had 2 advisors on set who where former Kriegsmarine NCOs and engineers. They helped them rebuild the entire interior of a Type VIIC submarine in a hangar. The movie itself is almost entirely based on the 7th mission U96 carried out in reality, although names and personalities differ.

I kept my hands clear though. Used an infrared heat gun usually. Definitely a great movie. WW2 era engines are nothing like modern engines in terms of reliability and automation. For the mechanics and engineers, it was like having a huge child to constantly baby and take care of and worry about. I've heard this independently from many WW2 vets (on all sides) about all sorts of piston-driven aircraft engines, tank engines, and ship engines (again, from all sides).

I visited the film set in Munich in 2018. I also visited Keil twice in the 80s, during my time in Royal Navy.and saw the UBoat memorial. Greatest respect to the UBoat crews. They were fighting for their country, regardless of politics. I remember discussing the film with a group of German sailors who invited me onboard their ship, and the fact that it portrayed Germans as ordinary human beings, unlike most WW2 war films.

Been insinde. You can walk through the original film set in the Bavaria Film Studios outside Munich. No openings for the camera crew, everything like in the original exept an exit in the bow. When they were shooting, the camera men had to climb through those same hatches and squeeze beside the running actors. One even suffered a nasty head wound, because the material also is original metal. It even is claustrophobic when you spend two minutes in there and walk out into sunshine under a clear peaceful Munich sky. Imagining sitting in there awaiting my death by drowning is beyond my capabilities.

Drowning .. chlorine gas poisoning .. suffocation due to lack of oxygen on the bottom and more. However, in deep water, below 'crush depth', no time for drowning when the pressure hull and everything else implodes onto you. One of the last things one hears is most probably the ever-increasing creaking of the hull, men praying .. sobbing .. saying their goodbyes .. waiting ..
Brave men .. knowing that in the latter part of the battle, the odds were heavily stacked against them .. still went out.

Many years ago I read the novel "Sharks and Little Fish". It focused on more of the stress of U-boat life; standing a surface watch with heavy weather is somewhat shown in "Das Boot" but the cold of the sea reached into your bones. The salt would cake onto their beards as well as ice in very cold weather. The heavy binoculars and scanning the horizon was mentally exhausting. The film highlighted the submarine riding the waves and a speed run to intercept a convoy beat everyone up. As a point of comparison American Gato class boats had radar which didn't excuse topside watches but gave a chance of detecting aircraft. When the Germans deployed radar it often gave false signals and then the British figured out how to spoof the radars at range... drove them under.

I just realized one of the very few blatant mistakes in this movie. In the very first scene of this clip, the RPM of the diesel are ramped up. You can clearly see it starting at 0:08. But the *sound* stays at the same leisurely pace. :-D

As mistakes go, the events at Gibraltar make no sense to me. If the boat has enough compressed air to surface from the bottom, it should have had enough to arrest its dive in the first place.

    • @DevSolar
      @DevSolar Před rokem

@@b43xoit That is one of the few scenes that aren't from Buchenheim's book. But there are several factors in addition to simple displacement. Their bow plane is stuck, meaning the forward motion of the boat is pushing them deeper. (Reversing the engines does take quite some time before the boat would actually stop.) More importantly, both bilge pumps malfunction when the LI orders 1000 litres deballast. Only after they hit bottom does get one of the pumps repaired to get all the water out, and I'd guess *all* of the ballast. So no, they did not have enough air while going down, not with that much ballast / bilge water still on board.

"Das Boot" von Wolgang Petersen ist der BESTE deutsche Film der Nachkriegsgeschichte. "The Boat", directed by Wolfgang Petersen, ist the very best German movie of German postwar period. Es ist schade, dass der Film, obwohl in 6 Kategorien vorgeschlagen, keinen OSCAR bekommen hat. It is a pity, although in competetion in 6 categories, the movie did not get any OSCAR. Meiner Meinung nach der allerbeste U-Boot-Film. In my opinion the very best made submarine movie. Selbst die amerikanischen U-Boot-Filme (z. B. Jagd auf Roten Oktober) sind bei weitem nicht so gut. American submarine movies cannot beat this movie, for instance "Hunt for RED OCTOBER"...
Fun fact: Two American directors, Don Siegel and John Sturges, should first be the director of "DAS BOOT", but the German author of the book, Lothar-Günther Buchheim rejected it because Siegel and Sturges wanted to realize the "typical" Nazicharcters á la Hollywood. The film stayed a German production and the Americans were out of the Project. I only can say: "QUALITY MADE IN GERMANY..."

Water carries sound exceptionally well, so if they would shout they could actually be heard by hostile hydrophone. And to reduce the chance completely they whisper. But of course, it also makes it easier for their own hydrophone operator to hear anything, despite his headphones.

      Quick story:
An australian navy submarine "sank" a US carrier (which was protected by it's usual carrier fleet!) in a training exercise of allied forces. They did this by a sneaky little trick: They were as loud as possible during preperations. There is camera footage of the ship's cook clanging pots and pans around the kitchen with a big grin on his face and his mates going: "He enjoys this. He gets to be as noisy as he likes." They also encouraged banging doors and jumping from the last rung of the ladder. This was done to get sonar operators of the US forces used to the sound of sub. "They thought, there was no way they would loose to those roaring aussies.", the subs commander later stated in an interview.
As soon as the training operation was a go, however, they dropped all the noise - even communicating by hand gestures in the command center - and ran the engines as slow as possible. This enabled them to hide in the "shadow" of islands and reefs were the echo of active sonar was way louder than the sub itself. The US forces even tried to switch off active sonar to have a better listen to the oh-so-noisy australian sub, but they weren't able to find a contact. It took almost the entire day, but in the end they got within range of the destroyer, aquired the target and sent data evidence of it - all the while playing "I come from a land down under" via the speakers for the sonar operators to hear :D
So, yeah, stealth is a VERY important part of the operational capability of a sub and every sound onboard perpetuates to the water via the hull.
