ABUSED & SCARRED DRAFT HORSE ~ GETS EMOTIONAL SESSION with THE ANIMAL CRACKER!

- To say that "Keeper" had a tough life would be an understatement. Keeper had years of hardship, suffering, zero love.... and has the scars to prove it.
Keeper, is a 20 year old Belgian draft horse that was rescued and living at Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue, gets a little session with Dr. Doug Willen, The Animal Cracker.
The following is an excerpt from: equusmagazine.com/horse-care/...
Origins
The familiar "blond" Belgian Draft horse that we see in the United States has its roots in the Brabant, also known as the Belgian Heavy Draft. This name has been shortened to Belgian for common usage.
During the Middle Ages it was known as the Flanders Horse (after the region of Europe in which it originated) and had great influence on the development of other draft horse breeds, such as the Suffolk Punch, the Clydesdale and the Shire.
Throughout the centuries, Belgian breeders resisted pressure to produce lighter cavalry horses and concentrated on breeding the Brabant, or Belgian Heavy Draft, which was well-suited to the climate and rich, heavy soil of the region. By not allowing foreign blood to enter the breed and by practicing selective breeding to promote desired qualities, the Belgian breeders were able to produce a versatile heavy draft horse with exceptional power.
Appearance
The Brabant, or Belgian Heavy Draft horse, is a massive horse, powerfully built and standing between 16.2 - 17 hands. The head is comparatively small and refined, with an intelligent expression. The Belgian Draft more normally seen in the United States is not as "massive" as the Brabant, but still retains the proportions of the Brabant.
The body is compact with a short, wide back and powerful loins. The quarters are massive, with a characteristic "double muscling" over the croup. The gaskins are heavily muscled and the legs are short and strong. The hooves are medium sized, for a draft horse, with only limited "feathering".
Early Belgians were mostly bay, with chestnut/sorrel and roan not far behind in popularity. However, since the 1920's breeders in the United States have bred for the sorrel and roan colors and nowadays these are by far the most common colors of Belgian horses in the US. The most prized color is the chestnut or sorrel with white mane and tail, white stripe on the face and four white socks.
Uses
The Belgian is known for it's kind temperament and is easy to handle. They are still used for all manner of draft work, including plowing, logging, pulling carriages, hitches and sleighs. In addition, the riding of draft horses is becoming increasingly popular, in a variety of disciplines from western to jumpin.

Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue was formed to facilitate the rescue of Draft and Draft Cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
The Primary Function of the Rescue
GGDHR promotes the benefits and uses of Draft horses of all breeds as trail mounts, schooling mounts, and competition mounts. We educate the public through the use of brochures, pamphlets, and public presentations on the topics of: horse slaughter and cruelty, the responsibilities of horse ownership, the over-population and over-breeding of horses, and how over-breeding contributes to the horse slaughter industry. Learn more about our educational outreach here.
Slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. We attend the same public auctions, choose the Draft horses we feel are the most viable candidates for rescue, and then outbid the meat buyer.
GGDHR is primarily funded by adoption fees, private donations, and sponsorships which facilitate the rescue of future draft horses from slaughter.

I am autistic and struggle to express emotions. I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve cried in the last 10 years (I’m 34)…… I cried for Keeper. Thank you for helping him feel a little better. I know he is going to know nothing but love from now on. I adore horses but I’m not in the position to be able to have one, but if my circumstances were different, I would have one of these gentle giants in a heartbeat. Instead, I have 2 rescue dogs. One I’ve had for 6 years, and she still has severe anxiety and suffered from PTSD. The other is only a year old, and thankfully young enough to bounce back. I’ve only had her 5 weeks and can already see such a difference. I don’t know how people can be so cruel as to mistreat animals. They are so pure and innocent. Greetings from Scotland 🏴
So well said.
Focus on where keeper is now and not where he's been.
Ok now I’m really crying this was beautiful thank you for sharing 🤧
Dear Charlotte,
Your comment made my day, week, month and year! Thank you for sharing, and I know others will respond enthusiastically and lovingly to your comment and connect with your vulnerability and authenticity. I know I do.
You are so generous to bring in 2 rescues and give them a home and love. What are the names of your dogs? Please share if you can.
It sounds like you are a natural healer with animals, as you mentioned the new dog is already responding to your love and touch. My advice is keep massaging them and working on their muscles. You will learn a lot. You will learn all their favorite places, and also look for all the places that feel tight and rigid. You can hold these spots gently. You don't need to rub the tender spots. Simply push with your fingertips with the amount of pressure that you could push into a grape and not crush the grape. Then find a new "grape". If you do this every day, it will also help both you and the dogs with making them feel calm. Every day.
I hope to visit Scotland one day in the future, and maybe we can meet, and go visit some horses together.
Let me know how you do, and don't forget to tell us the names.
Much love to you, your dogs and your family!

PS... I will also pin your comment to the top of the scroll so everyone will read your comment first!
You have my deepest respect Charlotte! I know how hard it is to autistic person to filter the emotions and feel emotions as such …the son of my sister is autistic as well …he is only pacifying and calming down among horses and donkeys …it’s good that you have two dogs
What is worse than this is that Keeper's former owner must have replaced him with a younger horse. That horse is now suffering the same abuse!
I shake my own head many people I know personally always say "they just horses they strong" I also tell them horses are fragile animals they need lots of care, up keep last they should not be treated in cruel manners keeper is a sweet horse whoever has that other horse should be checked on.
We need to pass laws that will prevent this type of abuse. But the people that make money off of them, including the slaughtering of them, will fight against it. This is one of the reasons I'm vegan!
They're Amish they'll just use the same excuse that "it's our religion " like they do so they don't have to pay taxes for land.
@@keychain3039 Religion doesn’t protect you from animal abuse & I’m sure most Amish people take very good care of their animals, particularly since they depend on them so much. Unfortunately, there are some bad people in every part of society & many of those are cruel to animals because they’re less protected than humans.
@@kathleenewing8383 look up the animal welfare laws that passed a couple of years ago in the capital of Australia - Canberra (also known as the Australian Capital Territory). They actually recognise animals as sentient beings who deserve basic rights. Definitely a good starting place for the rest of the world to follow from
“In an Australian first, animals have now been recognised as sentient beings in law, with the Animal Welfare Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 passed by the ACT Legislative Assembly today.
"These new laws will make the ACT a national leader in animal welfare, and reflects a zero tolerance approach to animal cruelty," Minister for City Services Chris Steel said.
"Modern animal welfare is about considering how an animal is coping both mentally and physically with the conditions in which it lives.
"For the first time under law we are recognising the science, that animals are sentient, and they feel emotion and pain.
"These animal welfare laws reflect the values of the Canberra community on how we should manage and care for our domestic animals, livestock and wildlife.
"This legislation will enable better enforcement of laws to protect animals.
"People who do not properly care for their animals, such as failing to provide a dog with water or shelter, face new on the spot fines.”
From: Bill passed to strengthen animal welfare standards - Released 26/09/2019
"Fines for these offences can now be easily issued by officers as part of the new escalating enforcement framework to deter further acts of cruelty from happening,” Minister Steel said.
“The ACT has become the first jurisdiction to recognise pets as "sentient beings", after tough new animal welfare laws were passed in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The laws, which will come into effect in six months, recognise that animals can feel and perceive the world around them, and deserve to have a quality of life that "reflects their intrinsic value".
The legislation introduces tough new penalties for the mistreatment of animals, while also placing more restrictions on pet shop owners and breeders.
A $4000 penalty will apply for not providing pets with appropriate food, water, shelter or a clean and hygenic environment.
People who take part in violent animal activities, such as dog fighting, could be fined up to $48,000 and face three years' imprisonment.
Owners will face $4000 fines if their dogs were confined for a full day, and then not exercised within the next two hours.
The penalty would not apply if a dog was kept in a backyard, where it could exercise, or if it had to be confined indoors for its welfare.
Pet shop owners and kennels will be required to obtain a licence to operate before the laws come into effect.”

As an old lady HORSEWOMAN I was appalled at seeing his scars 💔 Drafts are among the most gentle horses 🐎 This had me sobbing!TYTYTY for your kindness and compassion to these magnificent animals ❤ God and St Francis bless you always!

It s awful that these sweet animals are treated so inhumanely
Cows are also so kind and nurturing and clearly aware of their fate
This video made me cry too poor guy how he was treated

I am a fairly new horse owner and can’t image doing this to a horse. I got a 7 month old colt from a kill farm. He is my sons non human best friend. Thanks for what you do 🙏 Blessings
I was on the back of a horse from the time I was four years old. Unfortunately the cruelty of man no longer surprises me, animals have feelings, they can and do feel as well as give love. Please support kindness, courage and love for all in the animal kingdom, even mankind.
We need follow-ups on this guys…. We want to see him stronger happier and lickin’&chewin’!
I will definitely ask to see him again when I go back in the fall.

@@AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen - thank you! I def. want to see Keeper again. Those scars are horrendous & had to be incredibly painful. The thought of that harness ripping open tender skin that's trying to heal... every day, is heartbreaking. 💔 Why these magnificent creatures don't kick the sh*t out of their abuser boggles my mind.

Poor Keeper is so stoic, having been treated harshly most of his life. He’s not sure what’s going on, and seems resigned to it. 😢 Thank you all for caring for him. ❤
That’s what got me bawling, poor baby was so resigned to pain he doesn’t even react well to relief, like he wasn’t even sure how to process it. Yet he trusts the humans, stays stoic and endures 😢😢😢
Thank you for making me cry on a Monday morning. That poor noble soul. He has worked tirelessly all his life and all he got was cruelty and abuse. Why are people like this?
Keeper is so handsome! Thankfully there are people in this world, like Dr Doug and the people at Gentle Giants, who care deeply enough to help these beautiful horses. I hope to see Keeper again in the near future ❤️
I can feel how emotionally impacted you are by the scar history of this magnificent creature. I feel it as well. To the point of tears. Your empathy for your animal clients is a special gift.
Thank you Catherine, I do get involved, I can't help that it penetrates my heart.
@@AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen Love and empathy is so powerful. Thank you for having enough to comprehend their history. It helps me accept my own sensitivity to comprehending their pains. Oh Keeper, what a beautiful horse you are! It's heartwarming to see so many good ppl helping you back to health. Just get well Keeper, I'm sending my heartfelt blessings to you and the whole team ❤️
Keeper has learned to be very stoic; what choice did he have? Years of working in pain have shown him that there isn’t much more he can expect. With time and love, Keeper’s spirit will recover as will his poor abused body. Thank you for helping Keeper.
Seeing his scars made me weep. How can plough tack be so ill-fitted, and be left so hungry?! Actually I do know. Still just floored at the cruelty of some humans.
So very glad that handsome Keeper was rescued and had a wonderful chiropractic session.
Hi Robin, me too, I'm still filled with tears. Thank you for being here. Means a lot.
In my opinion, that horse was in some type of wreck or accident. Draft harnesses and collars don't make wounds and giant scars.
and worse by humans who think they are so much more "Godly" than the rest of us yet they are known for being abusive on their animals
@@openrangelivestockguarddog4041 oh harnesses can indeed make terrible injuries. Just like they tell people not to wear another person's old shoes. There's a reason horse people have different tack for each horse , mule, or donkey. I've also heard old timers talk about wounds from harness
@@elizabethjansen2684 Sores and Galling from improper fit of the collar, poorly adjusted hames, improper draft, don't create large punctures and avulsions.
Wounds and scars like that, in my opinion are caused by mechanical trauma associated with some type of wreck or accident.
Do ignorant people who use improper fitting tack create sores or abrasions on horses while working? Yes, certainly.
My statement is about the appearance of the wounds on this particular horse.
It's a great credit to the species that after experiencing said trauma, he remains calm and trusting.
If only humans could do the same.
Such a sweet handsome boy. It’s honestly heartbreaking to hear/see what he has gone though. It’s disgusting that anyone would treat an animal like that. I’m glad he was rescued and is going to be loved from now on. 💕
The really sad part is how many other horses did not get rescued, that were treated just like Keeper, or worse, right here in America on American soil by Americans trying to farm traditionally. So very sad.. and if they push their animals that hard, what are they doing to themselves?
Even though he was badly abused he is still a lover. Horses are amazing.
Hi Wild Rose, yes, he is still full of love, it's amazing.
I don't think he was abused because those scars run in rows, I think he more likely got caught up in a barb wire fence.
@@smckee9063 Those scars are from plow harness, if you have ever seen a draft horse tacked for pulling, this is where it lies. No question.
@@amandajarboe1131 Was it the Amish?
@@josephdockemeyer6782 Amish are cold blooded about abuse among family members and I've heard for years about their puppy mills. We must not generalize. There are always a handful of any group who are cruel-and worse.

What a beautiful, yet stoic horse. One thing I noticed, he is ears pointed up like “I am so great” whenever the camera was directly going for full frontal. He wears his scars with honor. What would the optimum treatment schedule be for Keeper? I would think it would be ideal to work on him really once per week, than twice per month. Then observing how he's responding, reduce treatments to once per month and then to some maintenance schedule. Considering he's had a lifetime of hard work and abuse,
would be great to be able to treat him everyother month for the rest of his life.
What would you consider the best schedule for Keeper??
. After a bad back injury I discovered myofascial trigger point therapy.
It helped me so much that I went to train and get certified in that work. While training in PA. we did learn to work on horses but not as much as I wanted to. But I eventually found an excellent chiropractor whom I would see on a weekly basis. He was so interested in what I had learned that he had me work on his patients to relax and loosen them up so his adjustments would be easier.
Keeper is incredibly handsome, noble, and dignified. I hope he continues to heal in his new life.
Perfectly said 👍💖
I could tell that Keeper was walking like his back left leg was tight. I'm so glad you got a lot of release for him. Whoever used to be his owner before should be turned in for animal abuse so he doesn't do this to another horse or animal. Keeper is such a sweet horse. I am so glad he is in a better place getting good care. I'm definitely going to send him love along with all the other animals at their barns.
Its the Amish who abuses animals like that. Just read up, its true. And no, there aren't consequences. They just get off Scott free.
@@sandyn3384 I've heard that from someone who lives near the area where there are Amish communities. It's sooo sad !
as someone from Sweden where workhorses are still common both as riding horses but also for uses in different scenarios, AND as someone who loves these big, calm and gentle giants, I'm so happy to see people reaching out and helping animals in need. Also we need MORE people who learn how to massage and "crack" animals to feel better. I've been in pain for most of my adult life, and no doctors could help me, but massages and chiropractor could. You guys are heroes.
Whoever did all of that to Keeper should be prosecuted, heavily fined and jailed for animal cruelty!!! There is absolutely NO excuse for so severely abusing an animal like that!! Those kinds of scars will never fully go away! It's truly shameful what they have done to this magnificent creature!! Dr. Doug, thank you so much for helping Keeper! I know that he has a long way to go yet, but you'll be back to do more as he adjusts and knows that you are there to HELP, not HURT him. Do they know about how old Keeper is?
I asked but nobody got back to me. I'm not sure if they know.
@@AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen That's OK. By the time you are done with Keeper, he will feel at least 10 years younger!!
I am so glad you were there to rescue him. I grew up around Belgians. They are truly gentle giants. Thank you.
My Uncle had a team of drafts and they never looked like this. He would've been appalled. They worked for him they were never over worked. They were well cared for, you could even say pampered.
Such a gentle soul (both Keeper and Doug). I guess Keeper was so used to carrying pain around he tightened his whole body up. Thank you dear Dr Doug for helping all these magnificent animals. I just can't fathom how anyone would be cruel or insensitive to their pain. Hoping that our future ascension will put an end to such abuse and suffering.
If how man treats animals is any indication of the goodness of a soul, amish and mennonites are going to h€|| for sure.
What a beautiful patient horse. How people can be so indifferent to an animal’s suffering is beyond me. Keeper has been worked hard, thoughtlessly, and then sold for meat. Disgusting. But thank you to his rescuers and all the volunteers.

He is the physiotherapist to a shining star and does so with an easy hand and the biggest heart. ✨ My love goes out to keeper 💕 and to all those whom are truly making his heart beat again 💝💝💝💝💝
❤😭❤😭❤ Keeper is a "Keeper." God bless you all. ❤😭❤😭❤😘
Truly a gentle giant. I'm glad he's being so well taken care of, hopefully he feels better after the deep tissue massage. I wish him, you, and those caring for him all the best!
What a beautiful horse. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see what people have done to him in the past…and yet he has such a trusting heart. Thank God/the universe/whoever that he now is surrounded by people who have his best intentions at heart. Between yourself and the wonderful people that have taken him in, he now sees how good people can be. He deserves to live the rest of his years happy, loved and at peace.
Thank you for being such a truly good person. We need more of you in the world.
awww, thank you so much Katie, I'm glad you came to this channel and I appreciate the kind words and support.
Doc
Blessings on Keeper and the good doctor.
I have farming in my background and my dad never allowed any animals be abused in any way. I do not understand the [insert bad word of choice] people who do abuse animals. I also have had chiropractic sessions for a bad back from an injury. So I can feel the relief you all must be giving to keeper. 🌹Rosie of Oz🇦🇺 & 🐶Omega the Cavalier🐶
What a beautiful, noble horse, much love sent from the U.K. for a speedy recovery and thank you to you all for supporting him ❤️🇬🇧❤️
Hi Sue,
Thank you so much!
I’m only 1 minute in and I’m crying. Doctor Doug’s feelings and emotions are so felt. You’re a great man. ❤️
"Keeper" is a definite keeper. Can't believe he's gained 200 to 300 lbs already. He had to be so thin. He's a good natured horse & knows you are there to help him & not harm him. Thank you Doc for your work. Hope "Keeper" gets better every day. I ❤️ horses, they are so majestic.
When you have horses, you know if they are getting hurt & you love & take care of them so that doesn't happen. I feel bad for Keeper, because someone obviously used & abused the poor horse & didn't give him the love & respect that he deserves. I Pray that he heals & is loved & comforted for the rest of his life. ❤🕊❤🕊❤ God bless you all, for everything that you do there.
Keeper is a beautiful soul. Thank you to everyone for helping him to heal emotionally and physically!🥰🙏🏻
Hi Cynthia, I'm glad you were here, and got to watch this video. Grateful that you participate and leave such a heartfelt comment, too.
Doc
Thank y’all for ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you!
Keeper, you are beginning a new life, surrounded by love. May your days be their brightest from here onwards 💗
The horse knew energetically what the good doc was saying. It mi ed, ears perked at the right time. He knew energetically the gist of it.
This one hurt!!😢😢😢
It's like he's so used to being in pain that what you you were doing to him was no big deal. He definitely deserves your tender loving touch Doug. 💗U Keeper!!😘
😢 I know. He is so stoic, but It's time for him to enjoy all the love.
I saw the same thing... It was like when Doc put pressure on that was uncomfortable, he zoned out - He had the same "thousand-yard stare" that we folks with PTSD can get when trying to get through something triggering. To see him give a little lick near the end was amazing - He was finally starting to be present and realize that what Doc was doing was actually to help him. THAT brought the tears to me. When Doc stops periodically to connect emotionally with him, I think that really helps in cases like this.
This☝🏽he was so resigned to expecting pain, you could sense his trauma, what’s worse is he probably afraid to even react in case he ends up with more pain. Most times people who abuse the giants break their spirit in the worst way to avoid them resisting once they grow stronger.
Thank you for your kind, skilled and gentle hands. Keepers brutal past is over and with loving the attention of his new caregivers I pray he will have peace and healing. Looks like he is off to a good start. It was plain to see how moved you were when you were reading his body. I would love to see a follow up and track his progress. Animals are very resilient and the body wants to heal. I can’t wait to see him smile! God Bless all you good people.
Hi Judy, I hope to get back in the fall.
What a beautiful boy. I cannot imagine what kind of person it takes to inflict the wounds he suffered. I'm so glad Keeper is now safe and under your care.
I find animals to be God's blessings. The unending love they give to us is breathtaking.
It never fails to astound one that certain people who have the privilege of having working animals, do not seem to understand that common decency and good, kind treatment would not only bring them so much more from the animal, but also do so much for their own souls. Thank you Doc Willen for your great support and treatment for this lovely boy. And, of course, what a blessing the Rescue Organisation is .
Looking at you Amish.💔
@@victoriawhite3662 honest question why Amish? Do they routinely abuse horses?
Keeper is a heartbreaker. I appreciate the emotional connections you make, Dr Doug. Keeper’s story is sad, but his rescue and care makes for a success story.
An emotional experience to watch, but knowing he is rescued makes one grateful for people who have hearts of gold. Thank you for your care and compassion, Dr. Doug and the entire staff at the Draft Horse Rescue.
❤️ Amy
The sweetest man ever! Omg my heart is full, I hang on every word, every adjustment. I stand breathless for the result. You are truly a gifted healer sir!
Poor boy so sad he was treated like this. I hope you will make his life better now. Thank you so much.
