BATTLESCAR w. Alex Lifeson (RUSH) & Kim Mitchell (Max Webster)
14th Annual Andy Kim Christmas Show
Queen Elizabeth Theatre (Toronto)
Dec 5, 2018 - Hudba
History will show, Alex is one of the greatest guitarists to walk this planet.
Not sure about greatest as, honestly, there are too many outstanding guitarists out there. But there is no question that Alex is remarkable in so many ways. Playing with Geddy and Neil caused him to be overshadowed to a large extent, not because the other two were better, but because the band was truly a triumvirate. Normally in a three piece a guitarist is highlighted but in Rush, all three members were highlighted. Completely remarkable how they did that.
@@stephencrispin1763 Completely agree that why is I said " one of " . Coming from a players point of view, his technique and phrasing choices are outstanding.
Undoubtedly.
Alex is the George Harrison of the 70's...supremely talented, but overlooked, and elevated, because of his bandmates.
Absolutely
Good to see Alex getting out there again, and I know Geddy has been also. They're two awesome musicians, I hope to see them doing something together again soon. RIP Neil Elwood Peart.
This was the MOST underated songs...EVER!!!@@
OMG! This song brings back memories of 'Moving Pictures' when Max closed with this before Rush came on. WOW!!!
This blew our minds when we were teenagers and listening to the universal juvenile album !!
Saw Max Webster live at Sutton High School during the Live Magnetic Air tour - 1979. 44 years later I still remember the concert well. Near the end of the show they lit up the gymnasium with huge white spotlights that fried everyone's eyeballs, lol. Kim, Terry, Gary and Dave - the original Toronto Tontos. "Now Daphne's the orphan...still searching for her roots. She likes concert blisters and leather boots...and knows one fact...her act is to get loose."
I saw Kim 5 times...from a bar to Massy hall to Maple Leaf Gardens. The Gardens was new years eve. They backed up Saga....and simply blew them off the stag.. The played "The Party". Imagine 15,000 ppl in perfect unison saying "here's Lucy, she's choosy who calls her on the phone..."....it was one of THE most memorable concert moments of My life.
Alex Lifeson has always been up there with Beck and Page /
my top 3 guitarists....
I saw them play this New Years Eve at Maple Leafs Gardens and Getty Lee came out with Max. One of the most monumental moments of my life.
Who is Getty Lee?
Yup I was there, taking the Subway from Kennedy in Scarberia they did about 3 New Years Eve show s
Toronto yea
Saw Kim New Years Eve when he played under his own name for his first EP. He played before SAGA. Really fun concert. Had floor seats at MLG. KIm and SAGA killed it.
@@ExpediteMMCXII lol
It’s difficult for me to explain how much I love seeing Alex, Kim, Peter and the rest of the band. I look at them and I think fuk they look old haha….yeah I have a mirror. I forget we’re getting older now :)
I’ve seen Rush, Max Webster, Kim Mitchell dozens of times, great every time 👍🏻👍🏻🇨🇦🇨🇦
beyond the obvious talent of Alex and Kim, always loved the voice of bassist on Kim's stuff....
Peter Fredette is an underrated singer and musician !!!
His voice is shot.
@@geftiler2112 You're high. LOL!!! He is trying to be high voice Geddy. He is a great talent.
Go Kim!! Fantastic, Love this, ❤️ love you!! Always been a fan, big-time!!
Great song!!❤
I watched them open for Rush. What an amazing show that was.
Me too ... Massey Hall 1976
Kim and Peter still got their chops , both can sing well. Hey there Big AL !
Can't like this enough!
Max was my favourite band as a youth, worked at the Mc D's on V.P. and Curlew that Kim went to. Served him twice, great guy . they really should have broke big...the music still rocks decades later. WEBSTER FOREVER!
I saw Max Webster in the hockey arena in Cobourg, Ontario around 1974-5… blew my mind
Two drummers, two bass players and two guitarists… that’s how you get it done! Rock on 🤘
3 years in a row in the 80's - MakeBelief Gardens, New Years - such great memories
Bust the busters, screw the feeders, make the healers, "feel the way I feel"!!!!
DAMMIT! ... I live in Toronto and EVERY YEAR I forget to get tickets to this Andy Kim Christmas Benefit. ... NEVER AGAIN will I miss it! ... I've LEARNED my lesson.
As a Canadian I played both rush to death and I loved max webster too but not to the same degree. I am so mad that I never saw rush tho they will never b the same without Neil for sure. My boyfriend had seen rush live n was blown away these 3 guys could make music n sound like many players were in the band, so talented and tight. Great band.
I saw Rush at the Montreal Forum in the mid-1980s. I never saw Max Webster or Kim Mitchell. But in the late 1970s, Montreal's CHOM-FM radio station had a contest and the high school that won had Max Webster perform at a dance. The winner was Centennial High School in the next town, and some of my friends went.
@@jamesmoffet4292 you are lucky to have seen rush in their prime, really I guess that would’ve been the 70’s but it’s hard to choose cuz it’s all good. I love max Webster too but, Ive not seen them either, I was a troubled kid who spent those yrs locked up but as I got older I saw many bands just never rush and I love rush. Party on dude! Long live rock!!
Saw Rush on their "Farewell To Kings" tour in Guelph. The only song I knew that Max played was "Diamonds, Diamonds". Couldn't wait for them to get off the stage and get to the band I came to see. Wish I been more invested in their music at the time. My brother bought their live album and after hearing it I was hooked. Used to listen to it on my disc player riding my bike for work from Hamilton to Burlington.
Why has this taken almost a year to appear in my feed? F'ing amazing.
You should subscribe to our page ;)
The Rush/Max webster Tour was EPIC ! (Hemispheres)😆
Totally awesome!!! Real instruments, Real music.... Real people.
What a perfect song for AL to take part in
I get chills watching this, incredible performance and such a great song, always on my playlist. Miss Geddy's voice but it's still great. Love seeing Alex up there with Kim. How lucky were you to be at this show!!!!
Saw Max Webster back in the 70,s at Hammersmith as support to RUSH, I was so blown away by them that I bought every album then and afterward, so underrated, so unique and so bloody talented- love em.
How does this not have more views? it's classic!
everyone’s too busy watching videos of drunk girls kissing 🙃
I was Jr in high-school. I showed the Webster album to my bass teacher.
He's a couple years older, music snob know it all. He hated it.
And that's when I knew I was right to love it!
Awesome live version and to hear Alex letting loose on the opening showing his guitar skills! All amazing musicians on that stage. Thanks
Saw them perform this live in Maple Leaf Gardens in the last New Year's Rocking Eve Show back about 40 years ago (with Alex and Neil) - blew everyone away!!!!!!
Alex is so above this, he has so much talent.....but this is why there guys were able to make the music they did. Alex your the best
Glad Alex went back to using les pauls in later years and has a signature model, never saw him with the one he's playing tho, 3 pickups? Always loved this song, so great to see this, Max Webster and Rush both very important bands to me and 2 of the Canadian bands that made a huge mark in music history, thanks Canada, and thanks for sharing this!!!
Don't forget Triumph! Another awesome Canadian Band and trio like Rush! :-)
Bill D also FM another amazing Canadian prog trio I got to see open for Rush in the early 80's it was supposed to be Max Webster but Kim quit a few weeks before the show I saw right in the middle of supporting Rush on the Signals tour.
he took it from Ace Frehley 😉
Geddy has publicly said that Alex sounds his best with a Gibson
That is one Great Song, plain and simple!! There is a lot of Talent on that stage and they play good old Rock n Roll the way it should be played, with Heart and SouI. I love it !!!!
April 15, 1981, Memphis Mid-South Coliseum. Max Webster opened for Rush. Rush touring the Moving Pictures album, and Max Webster with Universal Juvenilles. I was there; my first live concert. Purple mescaline.
Everytime I get drunk I gotta listen to battlescars lol
Saw them a ton at the Mustache across from the Montreal Forum a million years ago!!
Alex. The consummate professional. Kim. still sounding great. 2 Drummers creating one loud awesome sound.
Back in 1980 my girlfriend Sue frossel got me into Max Webster when I went to her apartment in Toronto. There was a simulcast of them live. I know that they opened for rush but I never realized how awesome of a band they were until she pointed it out. Thank you Susan. So if you're reading this send me a message. I've been wanting to tell you something for like 40 years.
This is so good, wow! Thank you for posting this. Back in the late 1970s, Rush and Max Webster were my two fave bands
Me too!! Wish Geddy was singing the vocals with Kim
And how cool was it to be able to see these 2 bands together in same concert? They toured so much together they were almost 1 band! Still remember thinking how great it was for us fans to able to hear a song done by both bands together....and such a great song at that!
I saw max open for Rush and Angel. No cigarettes, no matches.
I never in a million years thought I'd ever see this video. Holy crap
Another side of Alex that we didn’t get to see much of in Rush. Love the LP. That is a proper instrument.
Alex Lifeson kicks ass!
Wow Alex just doing all kinds of stuff!
Two of the best guitar players 🇨🇦
Warms my heart to see Alex smile.
Excellent - does the original justice - can imagine Lee hitting those high notes - with Peart in the awesome drumming session !
Thank you Alex and Kim ! -
first arena concert i ever saw was Rush 'Moving Pictures' tour with Max Webster Band opening in Phoenix Az. 1981
I saw the Max Webster reunion show in 1994, was amazing
I was at maple lief gardens for this song what a blast from the past
I was so disappointed when they didn't break big....yeah I'm old just like these guys....we're all in this together . Music should prove age doesn't matter...it bridges the gap .
Max Webster.....
Fucking gold from the Get!!!!
I love Max. This song is Canadian rock legend.
Two best guitarists of Canada!
@Don’t call me Angie And Pat Travers for good measure.
GRATEFUL FOR THIS!
So sad that Geddy Lee was not in this performance! His voice is unmistakable! Still, a great song!
Not like he’d be hitting them notes haha. Even when this song came out, Geddy was reaching back a couple years for those high notes, they’d already transitioned into the Permanent Waves-Signals sound so he was singing lower at the time anyways.
I wish I saw this live !!! Gawd dang Alex 😳
WOW! Just ... WOW!!! Beyond words with too much emotion. WOW!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
can't get enough love this
This is why I love CZcams.. where else would you get to see such fabulousness as this?
That’s some top quality Rock right there. What a treat on a dismal January evening.
I’m gonna play it again now. ❤️🇨🇦
Goosebumps.
YYZ boy here love theses guys ...
I was there for that epic concert where they performed this together! It was Mind blowing! When I found out it was a very rare thing I saw, I treasured it always.
Early Christmas present!! So good!
Alex and Geddy, please come see us on the road, we miss you!!!
I attendant every new years bash at Maple Leaf Gardens with Rush and Max Webster in the early 80's. They did it 4 years in a row. I remember one show where Geddy Lee came out with a Rickenbacker tear drop bass guitar to play Battlescar. Never seen another one since then.
I too was there third row blues right above the clock at one end of MLG - BB Gabor and Goddo Geddy on Battlescar
Yup...I was there 3-years in a row. I pretty well grew up listening to shows at MPLG..
Alex noodling at the beginning shows his brilliance,as Kim's chops and songcraft interweave
Amazing!
how fuckin sick was that ???? Two of the most underrated electric guitarists on the planet.
Love this
Love the intro of light improvs and gradually rising the rock tension!
Long live Alex lifeson 🤔
Max Webster was the warmup band for RUSH's All The World's a Stage Tour. 5 bucks
Fucking seriously HEAVY!!!!
Great upload.
great stuff wish I heard it earlier by ten years
We love you Alex!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT WAS FRICKING AWESOME!!!!
I will never forget when the curtains rose
Excellent!!
Great collaboration
And that , my friends, is just about as good as it gets !!!!
Great fricken tune. Peace ✌️ 😎.
Saw Max open for the Cars back in the day. They absolutely blew the Cars offstage.
Amen and amen
I had this Max Webster (Universal Juvenile's it was, right?) on vinyl and I was the envy of my upstate NY neighborhood. Fuckin' shreds! Gotta have Geddy here tho...
And a top drawer person to boot❤
🐐 Guitar 🎸 G.O.A.T ... Mr. Alex Lifeson
Awesome!
I saw Geddy perform Battlescar with the Lobsters in Indianapolis in 81. Geddy was wearing a full face mask.
Alex.....what a force of nature!!
still one of my all time favorite songs. Have to keep an eye and see if Kim will be playing in the Hamilton Toronto Area in 2023
I've met both these guys a few times - they don't look alike, but it's funny how alike they actually are … both are super creative, shy guys with talent …
🎸🎶💕Good stuff!!
Universal Juveniles!!!😎👍
This song is SICK!
That Lerxst amp is huge!
Yes, He is one of the greatest without a doubt. My guitar sound was very influenced by his playing.
