  • This video shows the simplest way that I have found to achieve Ghost Note articulation (aka "Doodle" or "Dooden" tonguing) on the saxophone.
This technique is needed for building a jazz saxophone articulation style that is true to the lineage of players of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s like Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, etc.

I recall how many of my teachers simply could not explain what they or others were actually doing even tho the teacher could do it. Your clear exploration of both the Symantecs & the actual doing of the techniques is powerful & REWARDING. Thank you for your clarity & honesty in presenting what many teachers simply CAN NOT clearly offer.

I really appreciate that! I've said it before, but articulating the sax has been a massive struggle for me. I've been working to get this method solidified for about 5 years, consulting with a variety of professional sax players and digging deep especially into Bird recordings. I'm glad that this method has been helpful to you and others 🙏

I love this video dude. And I totally agree with everything you’re saying. Phrasing is key. And I appreciate the wrestling with the syllables! 🤣 Keep it up man. 👍🏻

I'm a guitarist and find some of the exercises you share super useful to get the articulation right on my own instrument.
I didn't grow up with jazz, and it's not a really popular music here, so being able to hear someone dissect articulation from a technical point is really helpful for better understanding the language. I've found lots of channels that talk about scales and notes, but none that delves this deep into HOW to make them sound.
Looking forward to watching the rest of your vids and incorporating stuff into my routine. Thanks for all the information!

Thank you for your feedback! the lack of articulation in most jazz methods made it very difficult for me to understand style for the first several years of playing.
It has taken me a long time to understand and implement these jazz articulation techniques and I'm now doing what I can to share these concepts. I'm glad this is helpful to you
I'm hoping my videos can help people develop their style with less confusion and frustration than I had to suffer.

Thank you for this excellent overview of the technique that doesn’t even have a standardized name. And thank you for clearing up the “Dooden” conundrum. Indeed, I have been confronted by this when I explain this technique to my students. I will start using the syllables you have suggested.

Thanks for that, and thanks for checking this stuff out! I've had great results for myself and my students using these syllables as a guide. I would be curious to hear what sort of results you see in your and your students' playing.

I switched from flute to saxophone, maybe because of that this half-tonguing thing is hard for me to comprehend

That makes a lot of sense. The mouthpiece on sax is something that's literally in your face rather than something external. It took me years to get it together, but I think this method can help make it easier for you
