  • Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty criticized the government over house prices during Leaders' Questions.
However, the Tánaiste pointed to Sinn Fein's record in Northern Ireland.
"You built fewer social houses in recent years in Northern Ireland than we've added to the stock here, south of the border, certainly since 2016."
"Sinn Féin has not opposed a single social or affordable housing development in Dublin," Pearse Doherty responded.
"But in contrast to that, your councillors who voted against thousands of social and affordable housing in Clondalkin and in Tallaght."
Leo Varadkar then asked for it to be noted that "it was the deputy that got personal."

The problem is treating houses as investments. No one needs more than one house. Houses should not be treated as investments they are homes. The value of my house rising, if I plan to live in it as as a family home, is of no benefit to me yet we cheer it on like its a personal achievement. There should be strict regulation of housing markets with set profit margins, standards, and transparency. The government should provide high quality homes for those who chose to rent long term with rents based on proportion of income. Housing is a right, like food and education, and it is currently being exploited for profit and society is losing.

Also why is their such a discussion about social housing I want to own a house that I would like to work for not one that the government see fit will do me!

Don't contrast with N.I. Contrast it with a country in which the housing crisis isn't nearly as bad as it is in Ireland - which is pretty much EVERY country in Europe. It's such a disgrace. I have a well-paid job, but I'm single and without a supportive family and it means I can't afford to buy a house. I wouldn't mind renting if there were proper protection for renters and rent control. But, of course, the politicians in charge being landlords, more rights and protection for renters is not going to happen. It's an absolute disgrace what this country is doing to its citizens.

The build to rent scheme (SHD) is the biggest joke, how does that help any first time buyers. It feels like some entity is selling out first time buyers to the large corporate funds that pay the minimum amount of tax. Here is what you do, make more public land available for public housing, block the potential of any fund buying these land/ houses. Stop arguing with each other and make a plan and stick to it!

Here in Ireland we had what's called benchmarking where the public service fought hard to be but on parity wages in comparison to the private sector, during the celic tiger years. Where is the benchmarking now? Many private sector jobs lost, public sector on full pay. Actually some pay rises going on. The public sector took a solidarity pay cut in New Zealand by the way.

why does he keep talking about north of the border like it deserves comparison or is at all relevant to the matters at hand in the republic of Ireland?? We are not dealing north of the border and he is only playing to show his true pathetic nature and childish mindset with constant comparison to a different country and govt. I would love to buy a house in Dublin where I work but cant and if he is talking about 6000 social and affordable mixed use houses made available in Ireland under their govt. then someone please tell me where they are hiding because I have never seen them on the market? Where in Dublin is the affordable housing for first time buyers on minimum wage? A one bedroom run down unit in Dublin doesn't go for less than 200 grand and then your left with a damp dilapidated mess that needs another 100 grand to fix. House pricing in Ireland is an utter mess and Dublin is the worst of it all. FG,FF and GP are in complete denial, or even worse are fully aware and just don't care one bit. Its an absolute disgrace and god help the working class generation of Ireland for many years to come as we are shackled to the financial slave driving system that is Irish high class rule and rich elite. The government buying out houses, at inflated prices, for social housing. Is a major factor in driving up house prices.
The help to buy scheme just inflates the prices for new houses. Because property developers factor in that "extra" money when selling.
The government might be trying to do a good thing. But any government interference, in any market, always ends in disaster.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
