    Have to go with Elliot brooks in this one. This is one of the best trilogies i have ever read. Very unique, unputdownable and gripping

    Hi Matt, I think I recognize what you mean. I read all three books and found it a very unique trilogy. The world and it's history are amazing. And the plot does pick up and becomes quite epic :). My only negative in the series is the story around Noon (the felwitch) - her story felt a bit YA and lacked a bit in execution. However, many other character arcs are really good (Vintage, Bern, Aldasair, Hestilion, ...). I still recoommend it to other readers, but I understand why you are hesitant to continue.

    This is why I try not to start more than 3-4 series at once...preferably even less if I can. I mix in standalones between each book in a series...or multiple standalones....A King book, or some historical fiction or some sci fi or horror or regular contemporary literature. I can't imagine juggling and not completing a dozen or more different series for months/years...makes my blood pressure rise just thinking about it.

    The entire grace of kings was a prologue lol, and it's an amazing series.
    So give this a go.

      It was a prologue but you don't know that until the second book because it is a fully contained story. It legitimately can be read as a standalone.

    Finished this book last week. I enjoyed it but Vintage calling every character "Darling" or "My Dear" every other sentence grinded my gears. It just made her come off as an a-hole to me even though it seems the author was trying to make it endearing. . Fortunately the second book so far has dialed that down a lot.

    Interesting, I gave this a lower score than that. I wanted to love it but the world didn’t resonate with me and the storey was just ok.
    I pushed through all 3 books but it took a while as it put me into a bit of a reading slump.

    Isn’t The Grace of Kings basically a huge prologue for Dandelion Dynasty? I haven’t read it but that’s the way I’ve heard it described

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews
      @MattsFantasyBookReviews  Před měsícem +1

      Yes, but you don't really realize that until you read book 2. Book 1 feels like a completely self contained story with a very clear beginning/middle/end

    • @commandercaleb94
      @commandercaleb94 Před měsícem

      Ahh gotcha, the premise of Ninth Rain still seems pretty promising. Probably gonna read it sometime this year, I’ve heard the series gets better as it goes on. I know Elliot Brooks loved it.

    Book one is ok, book two is more of the same and the last book in my opinion was incredibly difficult to get through, I felt it dragged on too long with too little happening and I could not have cared less about the characters.

    I love this trilogy so much. The Bitter Twins is such a good sequel and really expands the world/introduces you to some interesting characters. The Poison Song is also a perfect conclusion that ties up loose ends/answers questions well. I love how unique this series is and encourage you to continue (bonus points for the lgbt representation). I think fans of Realm of the Elderlings would like this, as that’s more my taste.

    Bit of a shame that you've decided to throw in the towel. I read the trilogy a couple of years ago and was surprised how good it was. And yes, the first book does set up the next two. As you would expect in a good trilogy?

  • @danbe6280
    @danbe6280 Před měsícem +2

    I agree with you; the world is fantastic, and its background story is very enticing. Sadly, I can't say the same about the characters. I really dislike Vintage with her passive/aggressive attitude; Tor was kind of cool but way too stereotypic for my taste; and Noon was just okay-not too bad but not too good either. That being said, what killed this trilogy (yes, I read the whole series; I don't DNF books I own even if I don't like them) was the "modern audience" curse. This book is proof of what feminism and inclusion can do to a story. In the first case, EVERY straight male character in the story was always associated with or described by a negative trait, and in the second case, the "Lucky Charms" relationships were completely unnecessarily, ironically, one of the best characters IMO was Bern. To summarize, this is a world and a story with potential, brought down by the political views of the author and their editor. The first book in the trilogy is the best, while the other two are the worst in every way.

      I also did not like Vintage and I've found that to be a minority opinion among readers of this book. I enjoyed her initial introduction a lot, but her subsequent actions in the book were really selfish. Around the time she abandoned the other two POV characters to pursue her own self interests (with no guarantee that her self interest was attainable), I had totally soured on her.

    Usually when a book feels it is lacking something, but you can't easily describe what it's lacking, it means there isn't enough progression or the progression is too slow and predictable. Character arcs and story arcs and plot twists are all there to move the story forward. If everything and everyone is mostly staying the same chapter after chapter or is moving forward too linearly and too obviously (ie not enough of an arc) there will be very little drama or tension. A story without drama or tension is inevitably boring no matter how well written.
