Aiwa Excelia XK-007 Capstan Motor Swap - will this fix the wow and flutter?

  • Earlier this year, I spent way too much money to import a second from top of the line Aiwa cassette deck from Japan. In the first video, we got the machine lubed up and running again but found that the wow and flutter was running about twice what it should be, and I concluded the capstan motor had gotten weak.
Today, we're going to swap the motor for a new one, see if I was right, and then try out some new belts from DeckTech (Mana Tree) to see how they stack up against the Fix Your Audio belts.

You did well, I replace my Yamaha KX 670 old Panasonic motor due to same problems, the old motor gain speed at start and lose it after a couple of minutes, and produce a lot of noise,
Since i replace with one of those Mabuchi's tape deck became dead silent and tape speed became extremely precise at adjustment, W&F reduce a lot too,
It was necessary to replace power supply capacitor's with Panasonic low impedance in order to archive the best results possible.
    Good job..
I highly recomend to replace the pinch rollers, after more than 30 years the rubber became hardened and no longer provide accurate deform pressure over the capstan without to mention most are worm, so that increase w&f.
People suggest fixing the old Panasonic, but I don't know if a wear commutator and weak magnets can be fixed, manufacture say those motors had a limited time running until they need to be replaced it.
If Electronic manufactures like Aiwa and Panasonic would use brushless motors or AC induction motors like old AKAI or Pioneer decks instead motor would never need to be replaced, more than maintenance.

I was lucky enough to get MARS belts for my ADF 800 unfortunately they shut down production so dreading the day I have to change them again.
    Loving your vids btw 😉

Yes belts and pinch rollers are a pain today. Even the test tapes made today have a noticable w&f already on them.
Where did you get the motors?

Where did you get those motors ? and even you use a new motor give it one small drop of oil on the axle bearing . And maybe a 220 uf low esr cap on the voltage connections. Thanks for your video !

They were from a source in England via eBay. He doesn’t seem to be selling them anymore. I should have bought more.

Hi, i dont know if you tried to repair/relube original motor, but i think you have to try another belts and also reel motor front bearing lube and good idler.
As for belts i would recommend: capstans belt folded 118mm 4mm; motor to capstan folded 122-123mm 4mm, try different manufacturers i dont remember what i used, but not fixyouraudio or revoxDE. Those transports are very picky to belts and pinch rollers.
Also 34 minute of your video problem is lack of pressure of takeup side pinch roller or bad takeup pinchroller or "frostness from takeup capstan is worn away/gone/damaged), because when you "release" from tape supply pinch roller there should be absolutely no difference in playback speed whatsoever.
    Cheers

Thanks for the comments. The take up capstan coating was indeed a problem - I discovered that in another video on this machine. It's a high hours unit. I tried both FYA belts and DeckTech belts. The DeckTech belts worked but had worse wow and flutter, so the machine's been using the FYA belts ever since. I have yet to find anything better, but because of the machine being high hours I'm not sure it needs to be better than it is. I actually have three decks I like better now.
