Contains some violence (of course, :P) A compilation of the best pieces of dialogue in a film which I've fallen in love with so fast. Watch out for William Hurt at the end! :)
I think Anthony Quinn's portrayal of Paul Gaugin in Lust for Life (1956) is the shortest. He won the best supporting actor for an 8 minutes performance compared to William Hurt's 9 minutes nomination. That said Hurt's work is fantastic.
@@trueblue6201 I believe Anthony Quinn holds the record for best supporting actor, but Beatrice Straight was only in Network for five minutes and ending up winning that year for best supporting actress!
Aside from that one long single-shot opening scene, as a Philadelphia native my favorite part of this is how effortlessly Virggo Mortensen just slides into character (or out of character) when he finally says "Yeah, I'm Joey" in that Philly drawl - I mean that accent is pretty subtle and I don't know many people who can pull it off and sound natural.
I don't see it. Kinda felt like all the bad guys in this movie were 1-dimensional. Maybe the script just didn't allow for enough character building because it basically cycled through 3 antagonists, none of whom got a lot of screen time. But I just didn't really get into this movie. Trying to better understand it by reading other peoples' thoughts though.
@@RyanJ504 Understandable but not sure that the killers were all supposed to have the same depth. For me the key themes seemed to be a study on Tom/Joey and his family and their dynamics plus, for 3/4 of the movie, the mystery/ambiguity of Tom/Joey's true identity - a question only introduced by Fogarty and crew's arrival and increasingly present thereafter (despite us witnessing Tom/Joey's earlier heroics). Was he really a loving, self-effacing, family man and entrepreneur named Tom Stall as he claimed or was he previously a sadistic, killing machine, ex-gangster from Philly named Joey Cusack that even his wife and kids were unaware of? Despite incremental reveals of his character, temperament and abilities, it was inconclusive as to what the absolute truth was to the audience until Fogarty asked him if he had any last words as he was about to execute him on the lawn and Joey/Tom made that definitive statement. Hurt was very good but not sure he deserved to be nominated for Best Supporting actor for his approx 5 minutes of screen time all at the end.
It's absolutely hilarious - the weird banter about him trying to kill him in the crib, the botched execution, misses every shot and somehow he just straight up runs out of the room. The way he gets locked out of the house and then gets caught with his pants down trying to get his keys.
Does Ed Harris call him “Joey” for the first time while Viggo’s back was turned? Wouldn’t he want to get a good look at his eyes the first time he drops that name? Maybe that’s a reach. I don’t know.
I've always appreciated actors. William hurt sits right there as the very best embodiment of that term. Movie stars are a dime for two dozen. Hollywood can make a movie star out of any idiot. Whereas an actor is an artist who has the ability to immediately make any character a living breathing person in front of you that you buy into 100%,you completely believe. An actor is an artist who owns every scene he's in. William Hurt was in that class. I was happy to see, as I am always, when someone who really is an actor who then, gets all the recognition and financial benefits of being a "movie star". William hurt was an American Treasure. I've never seen him not do a movie well. I appreciated his work as a teenager, and now as a 56-year-old grandfather, I'm mourning his loss, he will be missed dearly.
.RIP william hurt.. altered states, body heat, the big chill, childern of a lesser god, dark city, lost in space, A.I., the village, a history of violence, into the wild, the incredible hulk, captain america civil war, avengers endgame, vantage point..
The movie clearly state otherwise. It show's that while violence offer quick solution to immediate problem' it call for violence to repeat infinitly. When Viggo kill the agressor in the café, it triggers series of event that impact his family and the entire city he lived in. The guy is an ancient killer' and even if he turn himself away from this kind of life' violence have found a way to reach him nevertheless.
Children of a lesser god and History of Violence. In my opinion, two of William Hurt:s best performances. Look at the company he was in. To be THAT good in the same room with Vigo Mortensen and thrive in your craft of acting. Good stuff !
No offense but you left out MY fave part: "You COST me, JOEY....a HELL of a LOT!!!" Tom/Joey calmly replied after eyeing the expensive décor: "Looks like you're doin' all right over here" -- as if to say (or he could've said}: "Richie, you live in a MANSION on an ESTATE -- whatta you crying about?!?"
Saw this in the theater. Richie's face filled the screen. "You know you cost me. You COST me, Joey! You have no idea how much SHIT I had to pull to clean up YOUR MESS before ANYTHING was gonna HAPPEN for me! You COST me! A HELL of a LOT, Joey, a HELL of a LOT!" Everyone in the theater was just riveted! He was SO evil with those crazy eyes.......
"Looks like you're doin all right over here.." "Yeah, I am, I am. I'm still behind the eight-ball... because of you! There's a certain lack of respect, a certain lack of trust. The boys in Boston are just waitin' for me to go down." lol
One of Cronenberg's best and a gem of the 00s. Anyone know what the deal is with the two "spree killers" at the start? I couldn't find much about them, are they actually just going town to town murking people for the sheer joy of it?
I always felt like they were just guys who caused everything to begin to come to life again. And despite how despicable and ruthless they appeared to be no match for Viggo Mortenson in this movie
Some of the best acting ever ,William Hurt. RIP. I wish they would play more of him with his perfect Philly accent and mannerisms, the part before the attempt to kill Joey👍🙏
Reminder that _Eastern Promises_ is just as good, it also stars Viggo being directed by Cronenberg. Fun fact: the tattoos that Viggo wore were his idea, not Cronenberg's. Also, the long-haired Russian folk singer is not an actor, he's a real Russian folk singer.
WHAT WAS so casually said and so true: R: You COST me, Joey...a HELL of a LOT! J: [looks at nice furniture/house] It looks like you're doing all-right over here. Another way of saying (and I wish he'd have said this this way): "Dude, you're living in a MANSION on a goddam ESTATE. You live better than 98% of people on the PLANET. You're a BOSS. WHAT are you CRYING about?!?!?"
No, he knows Fogarty is dead, that's why he phoned Joey in person, he knew it was pointless sending anyone to bring his Brother to Philadelphia as Joey would just kill them. Richie mentions the past encounter between Joey and Forgarty, because Joey had attacked and permanently wounded Forgerty who was a made guy (soldier) of the Italian-American Philly mob (and killed 2 of his associates). Attacking a made guy of the Philadelphia crime family was totally forbidden amongst the crime families and all its allies without direct consent, so because of Joey's actions Richie was heavily penalised and his promotion to boss of the Irish mob was delayed for years because of this, and as he said he also had to work hard just to get back in with them. Richie was so pissed because of this he even explains it to Joey, implicitly as a reason for ordering his death there and then.
Richie knows Tom killed Fogerty (actually Tom's son, but still.....) Richie doesn't give a rat's ass about Fogerty. He's pissed because of all the shit described by Arse Robinson.
My favorite: In this family we don't solve problems by hitting people! No! in this family we shoot them! Hahahaha ironically Tom is saved by his son that way at the end of the movie and the he shoots his brother in the face

RIP William Hurt. 8 minutes of screen time and he owned every second.
Those 8 minutes got him a Best Supporting Oscar nomination in 2005.
"Hey broheim, you're still pretty good with the killing.... that's exciting."
Lol unintentionally funny to me
That might have been the shortest amount of screen time anyone ever had and got an Oscar nom. Props to Mr. Hurt.
I think Anthony Quinn's portrayal of Paul Gaugin in Lust for Life (1956) is the shortest. He won the best supporting actor for an 8 minutes performance compared to William Hurt's 9 minutes nomination. That said Hurt's work is fantastic.
Gary Oldman had a similar and short role in True Romance, and it was so convincing he should have got an Oscar Nod. Check it out. 👍

I am from Philadelphia also and enjoyed the scene for the same reason. We pronounce "r" sounds.
4:37 his accent here reminds me of his role in Carlito's way, i hear a hint of that miami vice i there 😂
"You took his eye... barbed wire wasn't it? That's disgusting. You always were the crazy one."
Honestly William Hurt's performance in this is some of the best acting I've ever seen
Yeah, but his character is the dumbest mobster EVER as it can be seen at 7:36.
I agree, the depth Hurt manages to put into Richie is fantastic.
Go watch Mr Brooks, he's amazing in this.

It’s NOT exactly a gangster movie….
But it has some of the best gangster scenes ever.
Who knew the ending was a comedy. I couldn't stop laughing when he got locked out of his own house LOL
Richie was out of practice after years of ordering henchmen to do his dirty work.
It's absolutely hilarious - the weird banter about him trying to kill him in the crib, the botched execution, misses every shot and somehow he just straight up runs out of the room. The way he gets locked out of the house and then gets caught with his pants down trying to get his keys.
Ed Harris and William Hurt was so great in this.
Ed harris is criminally under rated

My favorite Cronenberg movie because it has the best writing and performances he's ever had.
This was the best coffee commercial with a plot 😁
Ed Harris really needs to play whitey bulger in a biopic
Hurt had all the best lines.

5:50 "You take his eye..." followed by Richie's priceless facial expression.

You can argue that violence is wrong all you want, but you cant argue that violence doesnt solve problems. Solved every problem in this movie!
It solves problems in movies.... check mate!

One of the best movies I ever watched.
Even at the moment of his death, the great actor Hurt throws his left hand out, palm up, as if to say "Whaaat?

Lol the way he delivers that line gets me every time.
"I was a shoe-in to take over when the boss croaked. A shoe-in."
I could watch it again and again and again.
William Hurt was hamming it up
Viggo Mortensen...; I saw how good he was when he played Carlito's Way....

I love how William Hurt says “Jeeeeezus Joeeeeey...”
@3:57 Tom: "In this house we don't solve problems by hitting people!"
Then proceed to hit son.
Tom "Joey" really solves his problems by shooting people.
It's called discipline. Lol but I get the joke
He just wanted to keep his son a good man. Some one better than he was. He talked back to his father. He was only trying to teach him.
He wasn't really solving a problem, it was for fun!
And Mrs.Stahl, don't forget your shooeees

In This family we don't solve our problems by hitting people! Followed by hitting someone.
