    In Canada French politics are on the news. However, we were not told about the low turnout and the European elections are not really understood. We are being told that most of Western Europe is so sick of the illegal immigration that they will vote far right.

    • @basdost1284
      @basdost1284 Před 9 dny +1

      As a Belgian, yes we're sick of mass (illegal) immigration. Low turnout does not mean more support for far right, usually the opposite tbh. Eurosceptic people tend to skip voting for European elections cause they don't support it. Just look at the Netherlands national vs European election result. PVV did a lot better with higher turnout nationally, than with low turnout European while their support grew even further among the Dutch.

    I'm from Malaysia and I started following French politics after Macron's election in 2017. I think one of the reasons why he did it is because the high scores of the extremes and if he couldn't just not do anything and pretended like nothing happened. That would just have made Le Pen unstoppable for 2027. And he wants to take away the number one reason that most RN electors are citing which is "we have never tried the RN". In hopes that for 2027, there will be a chance for a moderate candidate to win.

    Bonjour Theo! I just came back from Paris at the end of May and started watching your videos. I saw signs on buildings,etc. about the election and wondered what it was all about. Voter apathy( very low turnout) is a problem in many democratic countries, especially the US. We are in the middle of a presidential election and with former President Trump being a convicted felon while still running for reelection, well... our media are consumed with this and with the Israeli- Hamas war. Love all of your videos and thanks for the explanation of the French political system.

Here voting is an obligation. I recommend doing what you can to interrupt a bad person, to say the least, getting elected. I don't think many people thought Bolsonaro would gain much popularity and end up elected here, yet... It doesn't help the other options sucked and still suck as well. I want to leave my country at the earliest opportunity I get. If France's extreme right ends up in power, I bet people will feel more inclined to vote next time, but it'll surely suck if turns out that way. Get voting, people! Anyways, wish you all the best!

    Thanks for this. I appreciate it, and I am very curious to know what young people are thinking, if they voted, if so how. My impression is that young people all over Europe, especially in France and Germany are embracing the far right. I hope I am wrong.
    I've had a chance to talk to my friends about this and in attempting to figure out what Macron is up to the following seems to be the consensus among the people I know. First, the tight timeline for the election means that there will be no chance for people not already registered to vote to register. That means that a repeat of the European electins seems very likely. Second, the gambit seems to be very specifically aimed at kneecapping the left in France, the purpose, it is argued, for Macron normalizing the far right over the last few years in the first place. Finally, he cannot expect to win and seems to be hoping that the RN will mess up once in office and will be turned on by an increasingly fickle electorate. If that last is the case, then that is a pretty cavalier gamble with other people's lives and safety.
    Again thank-you. I follow European politics very closely as I lived in the UK, France and Italy for many years before returning to Canada. My friends here also follow European politics.

    No, we get absolutely no coverage on France where I live in the USA…and it’s something we have to seek out via the BBC news or even Canadian news, which isn’t a common thing to do here. I do it, but then I lived in Canada as a child so my upbringing wasn’t typical. And, I’m learning French so my mind is on French speaking countries which is very untypical for where I live. Our 2nd language is Spanish and no one appears to be interested in French near me.
    I’m sure you’re aware of the dismal choice we face at voting time in November for our president. I’ve never had a president that I have liked so it’s nothing new but this is a weird year for the USA and it sounds like a weird time for France with what you said. Merci.

    Why far right gaining support,
    Local people are frusted with
    - Cost of living increasing
    - Immigration unchecked (example: criminals and extreemist enter the country making it unsafe)
    - Geopolitics of Ukraine war (linked with increase in cost)
    my opinion on snap election is that, it is a risky stratergy however its is essential to see clearly what people want. Now its the test for people to vote and see the consequence.
    However from the bussiness point of view, if french people are expecting benifits from foreign contries or people, this will definitely scare them as nobody know what decison will far right will take when it is in power in the future.

    I don't know if having the RN govern will credibilize or decredibilize them. It could go either way. I just know that a lot of people won't accept them and will create a form resistance to hopefully block them in 2027. There will be a lot of chaos in the streets.

      I think the same, but also they are already credible in the eyes of many people, so the resistance will probably be less big than it was in 2002 for example, when they got almost elected president and 80% of people voted against them

I hope he not making the same mistake as Cameron which brought the UK (and the world) Boris Johnson for what seemed an eternity. At his critical moment in time, people of good will around the world need to stand together in solidarity for democracy and against the extremism of the right.

    I have seen a couple of reports on the political situation in France, which is exceptional in the United States. I note that you describe the Rassemblement National as far right extremists, but you do not describe the leftists as extremists even though the LFI members clearly are. A French guy once said to me, "In America, you don't have a left, you have only the right and the extreme right." I think that the opposite has always been true in France. You have only the left and the extreme left, to a point that any truly conservative or nationalist party seems extreme. I have listened to the leaders of the RN and Reconquête on CZcams and they sound like mainstream Republicans in America.(except that the RN is far to the left of American Republicans on economic issues) Are the RN and Reconquête extremists just because hard left journalists and leftist politicians say this is the case? I think that the French should open their minds to a different way of doing things after 40 years of leftist government.

    They say to vote against the RN but no one really knows how that would go they never have been leading... plus when we see what the left are defending it's scarier for me than seeing a party who never ruled the country in command . And there's a lot of lies said about what the RN wants to do (i heard people saying they want to prevent women from working... nonsense).Also a vote must be personnal, not influenced by others and even less influencers. People who vote must read the program of the party, think if its beneficial for their wellbeing etc...

    • @frenchguytheo
      @frenchguytheo  Před 10 dny +1

      First, the RN is now using leftist law proposals to act more open-minded and more social that they were before, but it sounds hypocritical.
      Also, a vote is personal but it's impossible to not have your right influenced by other people, this is the principle of democracy : people talk to each other and share their opinions.
      We have many TV channels that are doing open propaganda for different political parties, so I think the influencers also have their right to open conversations about politics.

    • @Lau_rao
      @Lau_rao Před 10 dny +1

      @@frenchguytheo True, nothing is 100% personnal and we are always influenced by others. But just people claiming to vote to make barrage against them, saying lies to convince people to do so etc it's not fair... And I mentionned influencers because their visibility is HUGE and they are followed by young people who might not really understand politics and just listen to their idol telling them what to do.. After all everyone is free to make their decisions ,just every election it's the same thing happening, "barrage the extreme" and then the "good side" don't really improve anything.. Voilà ._.

Many pro European Dutch people were in favor of Macron’s innovative policies and his efforts to integrate European member states further. We are afraid of the far right rising in France and Germany. At the moment, we have our own far right government to deal with. It is scary. Please Theo tell all your friends and family to vote against the RN. Why don’t people want to live in peace and quiet but argue and make an enemy of others? European societies are so beautiful and quite safe.

    Whether Macron did that or not, it won't change much concerning the future of France. The French vote for personalities, not programs. Macron can't be elected a third time. The next president to come will anyway be Marine Le Pen, she does not have any big concurrence. The French need to see - to feel - how it is, otherwise they will eternally regret not to have tried it. They'll find out what it means. Today's tendency internationally is right-wing, has more and more been the last 20 years. People have to feel it, otherwise they won't believe, like children having to feel that fire hurts. So be it. (Says a German living in France)
