- Music Director and Mason Professor Joe Walsh introduces the opera "Mesdames de la Halle," performed by Mason Opera in December 2019. About the Opera: In 1858, at the height of his creative genius, and just prior to becoming the most popular composer in Paris, Jacques Offenbach wrote "Mesdames de la Halle," an hour-long romp through the grand market in the City of Light. Several ingredients are tossed into the plot, including a young girl with mysterious origins, a drum-major with an overactive libido, and three "friends" who turn into rivals. The result is a riotous farce with some gorgeous music and great opportunities for splendid vocalism. Offenbach at his best!
Lovely, very nice performance

This is a very good production with nice designs avoiding the exaggerations of the Glyndebourne production. Would it have been possible to use a bigger auditorium to have at least a slightly cut-down orchestra? It's no good using the excuse of the Papp "Pirates" already dated re-orchestration. Good style and rubato. But why weren't the Mesdames played by men? It's funnier. The pants role Croute-au Pot was kept. Also the balance men's voices versus women's was upset. I've done faithful translations (Bote/Boosey) (e. g. "Hélene" Massachusetts recently). It's tricky e. g. "future" doesn't mean "future" It means "future wife". I thought I noticed some dialect in the "Mesdames" French libretto (on-line). I know John Ayler had experience of period French in his roles. Much as I enjoyed the old broadcast of Adam "Le Toréador" it was abridged musically & John's excellent recording was complete. the Jacques Offenbach Society
maybe they didn't have enough men to play them...?
@@helenacorreia7613 In that case they should have chosen a different work. There are plenty to choose from including with a good pants role which shouldn't be changed to a man's role!

@@richardduployen6429 I’m am wondering what operettas your have in mind?
Why do they always try to translate opera 's? This is so bad that I stopped after 5 minutes.
Ridiculus this ( inaudible) cancelation of some words😡
