      Cheers Steve... After taking inspiration from your video, I had one of the best experiences in 40 years snooker tonight, (have never solo practiced in my life apart from my 4th weekly 1 hour session recently encouraged by you and the Break From Life guy)... Straight potting off blue spot from baulk line distance. Have you ever had someone have an epiphany moment from finding that putting your hand on the cloth sooner and gliding your bridge-hand into position gives massively more accuracy? I found myself doing it one shot and it was like the time a Golfing Pro put his hands on mine, lined me up and told me to swing... Same feeling... *By the power of gray-skull!! Quickly deconstructing and repeating seemed to be I was flicking my eyes up and down from pocket to object ball, cueball and shaft a few times more. Felt like I was recalibrating and correcting all the time .. you're right, potting is *so* important. A 147 break guy at 16yrs (bout 30 now), said he thought potting straight balls off the spot would be his *go to* routine if he was to get back to practicing. I ended up using both baulk pockets, alternate pots as a kind of penalty shoot-out 7 reds to each one!! Never known an hour go so fast, so much fun!!! Thank you 🙏✔✅⭐👍♥ (btw yellow beat green 6-5😂)

    A quick story...I’ve been playing for around 18 months now after returning to snooker after a 15 year absence . My cueing has improved in that time but I kept missing...it got to a point when I was very disappointed with my game and felt like giving up as it was miss after miss. I watched this tutorial and decided to take a different approach at the club today.... I slowed my game down by at least 50% thought more about my pre shot routine, concentrated on lining the shot up more ...and went on to make my first 50 (52) break. Before I was playing at a speed that I thought was right but it wasn’t it was too quick....slowing my game has made a huge difference, and it was all down to this tutorial...many thanks indeed Steve! I’m now back enjoying the game and can’t wait for next practice on Friday.

    Very true your last statement about players being more concerned about watching what anyone else is doing on the tables.I started playing January this year, teaching myself.Got two 38's and getting 20's on the small pocket table but I also miss a fair chunk too....some sessions I get days where nothing goes well but my point is,is that the whole days I am in the club I don't pay any attention whatsoever to what anyone else is doing.Your learning process runs similar to mine, trying different techniques etc,etc.Thanks Mr.Barton.

    Hi There, Great videos!
    I have recently discovered something about my technique which has only come to light through watching your videos and implementing some of your advice and has improved my game by a lot however I have not seen anything on your videos about the actual flaw that I had in my technique.
    I actually took a video of myself feathering the cue ball and potting the black, I could not get good cue ball control and I noticed in my own video that my cue was elevated too far at the back and this caused me to inadvertently put stun on the white ball and consequently prevented any good cue ball control, I then brought my cue down almost parallel with the Table and found I was able to get much more cue ball control, I was wondering if you had any in depth videos regarding this?
    Thank you and keep up the great work.

    Hi Totally agree with every point. I am 63 and with advice like this and from others and since we are confined to house due to the virus restrictions my game particularly my stroke, eye alignment, angels, we'll everything u said and I can notice I am playing better then I ever have just after a few weeks. Going to get a Simonis 860 cloth for my Olehousen that I am noticing plays terribly SLOW. I think that will make practice much more enjoyable. Also glad to watch the video on the inexpensive cue. 9 years ago set out to buy a good cue and the billiard store let me practice with the most expensive cue but I noticed I played best with a decent 1 piece 19 ounce cue. Bought 2 of them and had two good tips put on them and they work great. I did notice I had another 1 piece Champion 20 ounce cue I never used until a few days ago. I think I like the extra 1 ounce of weight... Just need a better tip on it. Thank you M8. New subscriber.

    I've had to make many changes to my stance, cue action in order to get it smooth, 'effortless' and very clean and and it was uncomfortable to get used to but I knew that as you say it's the only way you improve or else leave stagnating.
    Made a really good 60+ break in open table today and some of the shots were really under control and recovery shots almost decent standard had to put a long distance red cue ball at the green area at an angle from the blue spot roll through with top spin gently and finish on the black plum without using a cushion to continue the break... That feeling you get where everything is under control and your aware of every movement your making and learning from them etc.
    It's the only way to improve..
    Soon to be a century break!! And then match play for anyone in the club

    Started doing the tracking thing a few years ago. I would add together the top ten breaks i had each day and then divide by ten, which would give me an average break score. In the space of about a year I went from an average of around 50 to making centuries, almost daily. and an average of mid 80's. This method really does work and best of all. Its visual.

    I don't play snooker, but I do play a lot of nine ball and eight ball - and these tips are dead on accurate. Especially about learning to cue straight and learning the angles. I spent many years messing around and it was not until I learned to truly cue straight ( or close to it, I am getting better) that my game really started to change.
    The tip about the angles is ohhhhhhhhh so true! Some people just see the angles better naturally (Efren Reyes is a very good example) but most of us need to really set up angles and learn to pot balls from all sorts of angles and also see how the cue ball comes off the target ball at certain angles and how the cue ball then comes off the rails.
    Really good video here and if everyone follows what is taught here - really follows these tips - they will improve and probably fairly quickly.

    Great video Steve. I too switched to a one straight leg stance from a two bent leg stance, but found it gave me terrible back ache to the point I couldn’t play the game. Reverted back to my old stance so I can continue to play pain free. Have you come across this before when coaching? Ideally I would love a more conventional stance, but I know Kyren plays with bent legs too and he does alright - so trying not to worry about it too much.

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  Před 4 lety

      All the time, yes. Not all of us can keep both legs straight. There are lots of things that are unique to certain players. As I say in the video, copy the bits you can, and work with what you can do personally.
      As you say Kyren, Mark King, Ricky Walden, Ebdon... They all have both legs bent.

    There are many who are as good at instructing but imo no one is better. For me the most important part of my game is my stroke and I spend a lot of time shooting "long" shots on a 9 ft table. I also spend time working on draw shot, follow shots, and spin shots from the short ones to the long ones. I think there are top players out there that know slightly more than the rest of us when it comes to this area of the game. From the various grips and what to concentrate on during the stroke to the sometimes raising and lowering of the elbow during the stroke. Also, I have noticed that a good percentage of professionals make a point of shooting the cue ball at a slightly downward angle in many instances so that the cue ball never hits the cloth on the table before making contact with the object ball. And yes, it is possible to follow the cue ball and still use this technique even though it doesn't seem possible. These are just three things. The way to line up shots and the stance is another area they are stronger

      Hi Shawn. Some days it just doesn't seem to work, does it!?
      We all have off days, even the top professionals. Never move away from doing the basic things right. The more you mess around and look for a problem that isn't there, the more you can set yourself back sometimes.
      Accept a bad for what it is. It doesn't mean you will play badly tomorrow or the day after.

  • @D00mswitched
    @D00mswitched Před 4 lety

    Any idea what may be the cause of the cue consistently moving across from right to left on delivery (am right handed)? I've tried all the following (one at a time and only changing one thing at a time) but none seemed to help:
    -Making sure hips & body are not in the way of the cue
    -different feet positions, stances and body "rotations"
    - different elbow and shoulder positions (both comfortable and uncomfortable)
    - Different grips & wrist positions
    -sighting/ cueing under different parts of chin
    -moving cue closer to or further from body laterally
    I made sure that: my bridge was ok and not causing the movement and my elbow and shoulder were not dropping on the shot.
    All have same result. The effect seems more pronounced the harder the shot, but exists also on slow shots. Only thing I can see it being is forearm tension. If I have a very short backswing and don't follow through properly then that is the only time it doesn't seem to happen but as far as I can tell my bsckswing itself is controlled and going straight back. It's the delivery where it moves off.. but if I for example cue up on the baulk line everything looks straight (and with a cue ball I put left hand side on almost always.. so I guess it isn't)

    • @bottlecap57
      @bottlecap57 Před 4 lety

      I have a similar problem only I have a tendency to strike with right hand side ( I'm left handed). I've noticed that different grip pressures can change how centrally I strike the cue ball but it's something I'm still working on, plus trying to keep my chin on cue until the shot is completed and that isn't as easy as it sounds. You could try using a headcam to see if you are actually addressing the cue ball centre. I was surprised when I tried it that I was right of centre quite a few times when I didn't need to be.

    Hi Steve.
    Interesting video. And I agree with 90% of it but where I think you could have improved or where you may have slightly tripped up is using the term ‘copy’.
    For me, you may have been better to have used the word ‘observe’ the professionals because no one should ‘copy’ what a professional does because what Ronnie does, may not suit what Johnny does.
    I see what you were trying to imply but I think you used the wrong turn of phrase.
    But as I say, the rest of it is spot on!
    I think the most important part is straight cueing for sure! Even just practicing cueing for ten minutes a day away from a snooker table can have positive effects. I’ve noticed it myself!
    Cheers.

    Steve, may I ask you about your accent? Where are you from? I like your videos and find them helpful - I just have to giggle about your Os and Uhhhs sometimes. Happy new year and keep on videoing. Greetings from Germany

      Ha! Thanks a lot for watching!
      I am from 'The Midlands' in England. As the name implies, I am from the middle of England. I live in a small area called Willenhall. That is my local town.
      My accent is considered a little bit different! And a lot different to how you would hear our Queen speak 😁.
      Have a great New Year and thanks for watching the videos 👍

      Everyone feels pressure as the break increases. Just remember it is totally normal to feel pressure. Instead of trying to fight it, accept that you will feel nervous and continue to do the right things and you will be fine.

    Hey Steve, great video.
    Can you please give me some advise regarding a bizzare problem that I am facing?
    *I am having trouble recognising the potting angles for short range shots only. I am very good with mid range and long range pots. But as soon as I have a simple short range shot in front me. I tend to miss it more often then a long pot. And its not that I am taking the simple shots for granted. Can't understand what's going on.*
