  • We are joined again by Ashley Smith, a mental health advocate and author, who lives with schizophrenia. She also works as a Peer Support Specialist, and in this interview we chat about what that entails, and how peer support is a valuable part of mental health care delivery. We also discuss some of the coping skills she tries to build with the people she works with.
    Thank you so much Ashley for being a guest on our channel! We so appreciate your insights and experiences!

    Ashley has such wonderful energy. It must be nice to see her when you walk in for peer support.

    I work in an acute care psychiatric hospital and regularly show an older video called "Living with Schizophrenia" which featured Ashley and her story. That was quite awhile ago, as she looks different now but I immediately recognized her smile when I inadvertently ran across this video! I'm delighted to see she is still doing well and helping others!

    Hi, I’m a peer specialist too. I really enjoyed the exposure of what we do.
    I love what I do, I love connecting with people and helping them advocate for themselves, help them feel less lonely by our shared lived experience, encourage them to speak up for their rights and have their voices heard! We all deserve to be heard respected and treated well.

    What a great lady Ashley is. Peer support would be so fantastic as no one gets it like another person living with SZ I guess.
    Love the idea of a mood journal with colours to show how you've been dealing in a visual way. Could help you see a pattern and also to show when you've been feeling good and doing well as it's important to see progress as well as dips and not just focus on the negative all the time.

    • @termikesmike
      @termikesmike Před 3 lety

      Abilify was 'game changer' for me - takes at least 2 weeks to begin-and this time is also needed to 'get off' old meds - small amount can really help without any 'side effects' - hope it works for you ...

    I have PTSD. My sister is bipolar. Now we are both mandela effected. Being Mandela effected makes me think that we have schizophrenia. But we don't because we see the changes. I'll tell you that the statue of liberty was on Ellis island and not Liberty island in my past. What did she do hike up her skirt and walk off Ellis island? I'm here to say that the Mandela effect is real and it makes you even LESS confident in your own mind. *We need a real mandela effected psychologist or something!*

    What do you do if you have a friend who regularly acts in a way that makes you concerned for your safety? The dude won't leave me alone and I'm worried he will think I'm a witch or something one day and come after me.

    • @RaysDad
      @RaysDad Před 3 lety

      Here is something that might work: If your friend is continually "invading your personal space" you might assure him that he is your friend (if that is true) but explain that everyone has boundaries -- then tell him exactly what boundaries he is overstepping with you. Then assure him again that you are friends. He may need some reminders about his behavior from time to time. Every human relationship presents challenges; if your friend has delusions and you still want to be his friend, that's wonderful! There will be challenges but also rewards. At one time I thought witches were watching my every move and I felt very fearful and isolated. I had zero social skills and had to learn how to make and keep friends. Friends help a lot.

    • @jacquelineleitch7050
      @jacquelineleitch7050 Před 3 lety +3

      The best thing to do in any human relationship is to be completely straight up. Just tell him exactly what you have said here.

    Recovery from schizophrenia? Does that mean it’s gone? I’m confused. Or does recovery come and go? Or is recovery getting through the situations, and continuing do that?

    • @lovesrunning8296
      @lovesrunning8296 Před 3 lety

      Recovery can look very different from person to person. Currently, there is no ‘cure’ for schizophrenia, as it is a disease of the brain. Hopefully, with greater research, there will one day be a cure. As for recovery, you can absolutely recover from a patch of illness and help control symptoms to help lead a better quality of life.
