When Lived Experience Meets Research | with Dr. Iain Campbell
I got to sit down with Dr. Iain Campbell to learn more about his journey from struggling with his own bipolar disorder, to conducting research aimed at improving treatment for and the lives of those living with bipolar disorder. He used the ketogenic diet to improve his own mental health, and is now moving the field of metabolic psychiatry forward through his research at the University of Edinburgh.
Thank you so much Iain for joining us and for the valuable work you are doing!

I am super pleased about your progress and your journey with all of this. What you’re experiencing with the ketogenic diet amplifies a need for more research into how B12 and folate help our neurological processes so fundamentally that they can mitigate schizophrenia and epilepsy (which is what the ketogenic diet was developed for in the first place). I’m so excited for you! I know you’re taking magnesium, which is fantastic. I think further supporting this journey with the adenosylcobalamin form of B12 and Folinic acid or L-methyl folate would create an even stronger foundation for you to help guard against any regression of psychotic symptoms during medication decreases and ever after as continued support. Regardless, I hope things continue to improve! I’m super excited for you and so grateful that you have been willing to share your journey with all of us.

This relationship/marriage is toxic. Seems like the woman wants family life & total break from everyone and everything at times. Sucks she has to go to this extent for thrills, attention, space alone. Reminds me of drug addict. Same level of unintentional hurt to friends& family to close proximity😢

My anhedonia was induced by anti-psychotic medication. Bipolar person here (not schizophrenic) who used to FEEL things good or bad very intensely. Psychiatrists erroneously prescribed me Quetiapine/Seroquel and Olanzapine "for sleep" fearing I would turn manic from sleeping very little a couple of days in a row last december (six months ago). The two medications were taken in the lowest available doses (Quetiapine 25 mg, olanzapine 2.5 mg) for a couple of nights... Now it's been half a year since then and them putting me on 300 mg of Quetiapine/Seroquel for its anti-depressant effects to try and treat the new anhedonia... I can feel emotions something like 70% but only in my body NOT in my head/brain. I can also feel some frisson to music I like, at times, but only in my chest and arms not in my head... I also have trouble maintaining erections and my orgasms are very "dampened" ocmpared to before (they too are not felt inside the head any longer). I react to to things around me or social situation out of "habit" rather than spontaneously feeling-and-emoting something instantly? Also haven't had a true laugh (belly laugh/deeply felt) in these months either. Neuroleptics are dangerous medications and they should only have given me those if I had actually been in an ongoing manic episode :(. This life right now of feeling no highs (joy) or lows (No bodily anxiety, adrenaline, depression feelings anymore) being totally neutral and "mid" all the time is a nightmare.

21:16 _"And I wish that I'd been told about this [diet] when I was 15, you know - it can completely change the trajectory of your life. _*_And people with Epilepsy know this, because if you put a young person on the Ketogenic Diet for 2 years very strictly, a significant proportion - maybe over 50% - will have no seizures for the rest of their life."_* Wow, what?! That is *insane.* Ppl in mainstream society know so little about this diet - I only heard about it in the context of the new 'health freak' or 'fitness freak' fads & nothing else. I had no idea it can be that effective medically...

I already tried going off my medicine a couple of times, but it didn't work. I think you should get the opinion of another psychiatrist before you are 100% sure you can get off medication, because of the Ketogenic diet. You should avoid trusting the jugement of a person who might have been just having a bad day or who does not actually have your disease. An old doctor once told me I wouldn't need medicine, he was just trying to say that you can be flexible on the time you take your medicine because nobody wants to think you will be on meds your entière life. Also you shouldn't be afraid to bend the rules, I didn't say break them.

It would be absolutely horrible to experience being forcibly stripped of your clothing and then medicated against your will by a group of tough guys. It sounds like a scene straight out of a prison. Common sense would tell you that using empathy and getting the patient to voluntarily agree to treatment would be the place to start. There are always people in the comments who say something like, "I'm a new psychiatric nurse, thank you for showing me how a patient feels" and it makes you want to shout, "Use some common sense! You needed someone to tell you this?!" Let's not even get started on shock treatment, that's just wrong.
