  • The dangers of Rapids Express Car wash. Here's a video of an incident that happened to me today 3/31/2021 at Rapids Express Car Wash in Orange. Note, there are some dangers associated with these types of car washes. Overall it was a very bad experience.
4/3/2021 Follow up: Eddie the manager ends up calling me three days later, and instead of admitting it was their fault, he went on to explain their protocol which is for them to file a claim then for me to submitted to my insurance company, he suggested that it was the fault of the lady in front of me instead of them, since it was their machine that was pushing me along into her car! Such a bad phone call he made to me. And when I suggested he admit fault and explain what they will do so this doesn't happen again, he remained silent. So what I got out of this whole experience is, these places just pack cars in to make the most money and they really don't care about you or your car.

Avoid tunnel brush washes. High pressure touchless is the way to go. It's a track that utilizes rollers to move your car along. Her car is hopping like that because the rollers are bumping underneath the tire. When you hit the brakes, the same thing happened to you. Most washes will have one roller pushing your car, plus a second just in case you bump over that first one.

About 2 or 3 years ago they upgraded their camera system with technology that puts a virtual box around every car. There's a big screen monitor that even customers can see when entering so we can see those virtual boxes. Anything that's not part of the car wash system (another vehicle) that beaches the "box" shuts down the car wash. I've never confirmed or seen it work myself and hope i don't have to.

I was recently at a drive-through Cobblestone tunnel wash, when the lady driving an SUV in front of not only failed to put her car in neutral, she stepped on the gas and smashed into a small sedan in front of her. Workers stopped the belt, spoke to the driver of the SUV and the sedan pulled forward away from the SUV, and the belt restarted. When I exited the tunnel, I saw the two drivers huddled together, presumably exchanging insurance information. No workers ever came near them during the time I was in the bay drying my car and using the vacuums. These car washes are certainly convenient, but like everything else, there are risks. When I have the time and the weather is good, I try to just stay at home and wash the car in the driveway.

I used to work at a car wash like this and nobody ever hit another car, but we did have a ton of people that would slam on their brakes and jump the rollers or turn their car off. We had one lady put her car in neutral and then proceed to bang the rev limiter all the way through the wash, but It's not the car washes fault if people can't understand very simple instructions. I'm not sure why people think the carwash should be liable, but then again the same people can't put a car in neutral and just sit there. We also had people at the end to towl dry and guide people.

So how these car washes work is there’s a belt only on one side that pushes your car along. You put the car in neutral because the wheels need to turn on the side that donsnt have the belt. If you leave the car in gear or put the car in park the car wash belt will destroy your transmission. The lady got to the end of the belt and it looked like she put her car back into park you see her brake lights come on and to shift the car your foot needs to be on the brake but if you are in neutral you can just shift back to drive without hitting the brake pedal. You only need to touch the brake to shift when going from park to drive or drive to reverse.

This is really a non-event. I've been driving for 32 years, most of it in the city and in bumper to bumper traffic. I also parked on the street for most of that time. I've never been in an accident, but can't count the number of times I got bumped by the guy behind me and sometimes I bumped the guy in front of me. No to mention the scratches on my bumpers from folks parallel parking around me. This is bound to happen, that's why all cars have bumpers. To bump.

This is so easy to avoid by a bit of redesign of the belt, just have someone there ready to stop it, or some kind of sensor that automatically stop the belt if the car at the exit haven't left the area.
They are so greedy they don't think about it, and leave it to customers to sort it out.
I never see something like this in my country, most people prefer hand wash or self-service pressure washer.

It is easy to get her. Her plate is showing in your video at 3:45. It is LXDG718. I assume you know the state (I think your information at the top says Washington). Just go to the police with that informaiton if your car was damaged and they will trace down that Camry for you to identify the lady. If you show the police, your video as you posted here, I believe they will get that information for you. Then you can file against her. Good luck.

At the conveyor-belt car was I go to, they leave decent space between cars. But that’s also with taking to account that our area (Kitsap County, WA) always has low volume at car washes, even on nice sunny days, especially compared to California and the east coast, which I always see that they have so much higher volume on a daily basis than Washington, where I live. So in this case, they were trying to cram as many cars as they could into the tunnel, which is NEVER good. And the way they interacted with you was horrible. Never go back there again. Ever.

I’m not sure if this would’ve helped in your situation, especially since the car wash manager was so blasé about everything, but here’s what I would’ve done: if the manager were to pull his crap with me and claim he couldn’t find my receipt, I would call the police and tell them that I was involved in a minor collision at Jiffy Wash and that Mr. So-and-So is not complying with my request in filling a claim against them. Additionally, I would’ve also gotten in touch with my car insurance carrier pronto because what happened with you WAS indeed technically a motor vehicle accident, no matter how minor it may have been. Not to mention, the lady in front of you in the Camry DID drive off and thusly DID flee the scene of an accident, so I would think there would be a very good possibility that your insurance carrier would rule in your favor since you weren’t at fault. And yes: that police report would have most certainly helped your case in getting your claim paid. I’m terribly sorry this happened to you, man…

    • @kfelix2934
      @kfelix2934 Před 9 dny +1

You're correct on two things, it's a motor vehicle accident and 2nd she left the scene.
Now on jiffy wash being the blame from a motor vehicle accident is probably not correct. This would be a civil matter between you and the car wash. The lady is long gone unless the police have evidence ( license plate#, your dashcam, the car wash cameras, etc....) and pursue finding the lady for leaving the scene.
For the civil lawsuit side of things, it's a gamble but you will probably lose. Unless you can say the wash was negligent in operating, the equipment failed, or the employee failed to act or was improperly trained, I do not see how you would win.
Just saying all of the above cause I've been thru exactly what happened here but I have full coverage. I just ate my deductible and moved on with my life. The Damages were only 1799 dollars & my deductible was 500 fwiw.

This carwash system is most likely called Tommy wash system. I use manage this system for 4 years and I can explain the whole thing. The belt system is the most efficient system there is and on a busy day the most I ever done in a day was little over 1600. Problems with this system that customer has to put in neutral on a moving surface and had people tend to panic sometimes and ether put in drive or park. There is signs and loud intercom voice to tell people to stop and put in neutral. Customer responsibly is to make sure the car in neutral and foot off brake and unfortunately they lady in the Camry put it in park which caused the front wheel to lock which did not allow belt to push the car out. There is a collision control sensor but where the lady’s car was positioned the belt did not stop on time . As for employee there is a lot of different factors. If the employee was there next to the machine he could of stop it on time but if the employee is outside helping another customer and heard honking he has to rush back but at the same time not slip in the slippery floor with moving parts. In reality it’s possible to have someone in the back but there is no need if the place doesn’t get that much accidents. Unfortunately the carwash can not except responsibility because all equipment was working properly it was driver error of the camery that caused the accident and with have to go thru insurance. For Managment if you explain the story correctly I can’t say to manager is wrong but It sounds like he can do a better job off being more concerned. If it was me I would not hesitate to give your money and help you through the process to find the person responsible. I lost my self writing this but hope the helps but if you any questions comment down below

You did a A+ job explaining this btw. And most people arguing here has not one clue about what goes on.
When I hit a car who was also a lady who was also in a Toyota ( highlander ) , who also ran off . The car wash gave a statement for insurance, and gave me a 1 month free car wash pass. I didn't blame them, it was a accident caused by the other driver. My insurance eat the claim and we didn't waste any time or useless effort.
Even the police never came, I had to file the accident in their lobby fwiw. Again this is a minor accident, no heavy damage , no loss of life, no waste of people time or creation of stress.

I've taken my 4Runner there three times and my mirrors were all tucked in, the only problem I've ever had was that some of the molding on the top got blown loose.
I was never that close to a car in the many times I've taken all of my Toyotas there. It was nice when Toyota Of Orange started giving comp passes to them instead of washing in house.

I go to a Shiny Shell regularly. They ALWAYS put the cars too close together, IMO. Since I worry about things like this, I usually look down at my phone while they are signaling me in, take about 15 seconds without proceeding, then look up like "oops, my bad". Just enough time for the car in front of me to be further along the conveyer. Obviously, I can't control the car behind me, but I do as much as I can to minimize the risk.

The license plate doesn’t tell you who the driver is. The other driver got rear ended, so they aren’t at fault. They may not have felt the collision, good luck proving otherwise. It was a minor bump on private property, the cops won’t do anything.

Yeah, too bad this happened, but I’m not sure what you expect the manager or owner of the car wash to do however. The other driver took off and The accident is between two motor drivers so the car wash really has no liability in it. The only thing you really could’ve done at this point is file the claim and then call the police and file a report with them. These car washes always tell you enter at your own risk! They are not responsible for accidents or from damage to your car.
