- The Île de la Cité is one of two remaining natural river islands in the Seine within the city of Paris. It is the center of Paris and the location where the medieval city was refounded.
The Palais de la Cité, also known as La Conciergerie was the residence of the Kings of France from the sixth century until the 14th century. From the 14th century until the French Revolution, it was the headquarters of the French treasury, judicial system and the Parlement of Paris, an assembly of nobles. During the Revolution it served as a courthouse and prison, where Marie Antoinette and other prisoners were held and tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal. Both parts of the Conciergerie and Saint-Chapelle are classified as national historical monuments and can be visited, though most of the Palais de Justice is a working courthouse and is therefore closed to the public.
On the night of 2 August 1793, Marie-Antoinette, “the widow Capet”, was awakened abruptly in the Temple prison. Asked to get dressed, she was quickly separated from her daughter, Madame Royale, and from her sister-in-law, Madame Elisabeth. She was then transferred, under armed escort, to the prison in the Conciergerie. On arrival, Marie Antoinette was taken directly to the cell that had been reserved for her. Two police officers, with orders not to take their eyes off of her, guarded her night and day. A low screen divided her cell: one side for the police officers, the other for the prisoner. The ex-queen, detained “in secret”, was completely isolated from the other prisoners. At the end of August, a municipal officer brought a mysterious individual to see Marie Antoinette. The Chevalier de Rougeville dropped a white carnation, which contained a hidden message. It was an escape plan that required the prison warders to be “bought”. The plan very nearly succeeded. On the night of 2 September, Marie- Antoinette even came out of her cell… But at the last moment officer Gilbert caused the plan to fail completely.
During the Restoration, and according to the wishes of Louis XVIII, Marie Antoinette’s sordid cell was transformed into a remarkable oratory dedicated to her memory. A dedication to Louis XVIII and an extract from the “will” of the “martyred queen” found a few months previously were engraved on a small marble altar. Three paintings set out the stages of her imprisonment. This small memorial was officially inaugurated on 16 October 1816.

Shecwas mistreated by the French because shevwas Austrian. Many years ago, my sister and her husband stayed in one of her hunting lodges in Austria, its in a place called feberbrun. The queen would visit there for the clean air.
Agree. She was naive, yes, but she was also lied about and falsely accused in the necklace fiasco. Imprisonment is one thing. But, she had to watch her husband and her children be murdered in front of her.

Looks like a palace on the outside... but the inside must have been really dark, especially back then when there was no modern electricity and lighting.

And all floors and walls were not so bright. The actual floors are modern pavement or tiles, so are most of the prison cells doors.
The place was damp and the Queen´s cell had a wall affected by this dampness.

She was just a child who didn’t know poverty and darkness. It was cruel for a little girl to be used for trade…
@@PUAlum I think you may be correct. The rulers are generally connected to other powerful people, and they all help each other in gaining more power and money. Sadly, this seems to be the case in most countries.

In “Bastille” metro station there is a stone block, leftover of the bastille prison foundation. I always admired the decision to conserve that piece of stone for people to see. I wish they kept some corners of the conciergerie in its original shape although l like that freezing cold white used to conserve the place.
Exactly what I thought, I visited a former and old (many centuries) Scottish prison or the Tower of London
and you can really feel the creepy ambiance of these sites. Fortunately, you still find authentic old French buildings, military, religious or penitential with that authentic feeling that you just want to be there for a short visit and happy to be free when out.

Thought she was first imprisoned for a time in the “Diana Room”….in a bldg / museum along the Rue de Rivoli. This is much more sad and depressing. Was this museum exhibit open in 2006?
Marie-Antoinette was first imprisoned in the "Prison du Temple" (actually, a tower, now destroyed), along with her family. She was transferred to the Conciergerie when her trial started.

1 ) The Conciergerie was ,together with the Sainte Chapelle, a part of the royal palace in the Middle Ages,then a courthouse and a prison
2) The French revolution was bloody and tragic but absolutely necessary.The whole society was transformed .Liberte,Egalite for everyone .
3)France does not exploit her History :she shows it.
As for Marie-Antoinette,she very in fashion nowadays : her palaces (Petit Trianon,la Laiterie) her prefered perfume has been reconstituated , in certain.good pastrie shops, cakes bear her name

I have never felt any sympathy for Louis XVI or Marie Antoinette; they were profoundly indifferent to the plight of their starving populace, while they lived in sumptuous luxury. It is a lesson to all governments indifferent to it people. America's FDR redefined Government responsibility in a time of world-wide economic, responding to the needs of the populace.
My interpretation off the French Revolution is coloured by Dickens', "A Tale of Two Cities" and Madame LaFarge.

It's certainly was but depends in what you're analyzing as a tragedy :
1 - Stopping and changing an abusive political system betraying his citizens to get a new and more democratic one ?
2 - Continuing to live under this system and having no evolution of the society or no real human rights, or getting the real fruits of your labour ?
Of course, most of Monarchies evolved to democracies but you still find big unfair elements in those systems.
In January 1793, The Revolutionary Government in Paris declared War on Britain!
