This is just about my fave album. Mark was a genius. Thank you so much for featuring it.

Totally agree. Really fundamental in 1988 and still listen today and hear something different

I've listened to this track hundreds of time since it came out in 1988. It's not so much that I hear different things, but I FEEL different things every time. That's what makes Talk Talk so special

This song is an eargasm, so many beautiful sounds, the lyrics are so poetic.Grear info on the making of this masterpiece of an album.

You have said it best "Interesting noises and sounds that don't repeat" "Happiness Is Easy" is another example of noises and sounds that don't repeat. Every Talk Talk song has them. Headphones are a must to really hear them all. They will play one note that is so enjoyable it leaves you wanting more but they will play it only once. That is the key to what brings you back for more listening. You end up waiting for that one note to play.
I painted houses for a living. It was common for the customer to say "this is my favorite color, paint the whole house with it" I would tell them no. You take the color you like the most and you use it the least. It makes the final product more interesting. Every time you look at the project you get that feeling of yearning of wanting more of that color. But if you used more of that color the whole job will be ruined. Sometimes they listened and sometimes they didn't. The ones who did not were sorry they didn't. And that's how I feel about Talk Talk music. They do not over use a note, a sound or a noise.

That;s lovely! I remember "It's my life" from the 80's, but I don't think it registered at the time. Now I will go back and listen to that again.

    Great idea!
In 1988 i went on the train from Odense to Copenhagen, or maybe it was the other way around, but me and a fellow traveller, (total stranger, maybe from Rødekro or on his way there), decided to trade the tapes, we had in our Walkmen. He got U2: The Joshua Tree and i got Talk Talk: Spirit of Eden.
I had all the Talk Talk releases on vinyl until this and the one before it; The Colour of Spring.
Immediately after getting of the train, and now being back with U2, i realized that i had to have that album as soon as possible. The shops had closed, but the next day, i went and bought the two albums i missed.
With Laughing Stock, these albums are the only ones i have listened to every month, at least once a month, since that trip, and my exchange with that guy from Rødekro. I listen to other stuff too, but these albums are the only ones, that has seen that kind of consistency.
This music is therapy… and a battering of the soul. New Grass, from Laughing Stock, is my favorite soothing coda, after a few hours with Talk Talk.
Thanks to you guys, for this great format, and thanks to Rødekro guy for making me aware of this brilliant album back in 1988.

Hey BD, thanks for your story. I think everyone should swap music on long journeys - brilliant idea! Luckily you both had fantastic albums, but for me Spirit of Eden wins it every time.

it's so hard to find reactions to talk talk on youtube. let alone someone who's into the band enough to have a framed portrait of spirit of eden on their wall! loved both the reaction and the in-depth discussion of a song from a band I love so much.

Thanks for your comment - glad you enjoyed it. There definitely isn't enough appreciation out there for the genius of Mark Hollis.
The frame on my wall is one designed for album covers - it flips open and you can change it as often as you like. I'd highly recommend it for vinyl junkies. You'll see another Talk Talk cover on this episode: czcams.com/video/zuV8G4Oqi1M/video.html. There will be more Talk Talk reactions coming up. Thanks again.
      Cheers, Jon.

The most exquisite song on one of the greatest albums of all time. Andy, you won't regret giving the full Spirit of Eden a whirl and then perhaps try the albums either side of it- The Colour of Spring and Laughing Stock. All three are masterpieces.

You can listen to this song every day for a year, and then one day it hits you that the choir is singing about the ocean. The sound on Spirit of Eden is so liquid, this song in particular.

Absolutely could not agree with Jon more about Talk Talk, for me their Three album span from "Its my Life" through to "spirit of eden" is some of the best music ever recorded,i found "laughing stock" a bit too much, arsehole disappearing tricks may be cited there for me...but i hear their music in so much that i love since,Definitely there in Radiohead,Arcade Fire,Mercury Rev,Wild Beasts,Massive Attack,Air etc etc etc,too many to list, probably in my top 5 of all time, the pink floyd of the post pink floyd generation.

Please accept my apologies, talk talk's evolution from colour of spring to Spirit of Eden and laughing stock is profound. They are 3 of my favourite albums.
In Mark hollis's solo album,I can hear the space he talks about between notes. ( Or not hear) . Mark was a person of few words.
Some of the comments I understand and I think it's a wonderful song , if not my favourite of all time.
There is something spiritual to talk talk's sound that is difficult to put into words.
I enjoy other people's covers of "I believe in you" Bon Ivor being one.
I'm a huge talk talk fan. My apologies.
