    I decided to learn to use my Breviary (“Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours” published by Paulines Media Center) without a guide similar to the Saint Joseph’s guide simply because it wasn’t available for my Breviary and from where I’m from here in the Philippines. I also didn’t want to rely on a guide just so I could talk to my Lord aka pray. Idk I guess my situation really is for convenience and is by choice. Also, Psalm 100 for the win!🤩

    I have “approached” the LOTH and the Christian Prayer books about 50 times over the past two years. Each time I sit down, I feel optimistic and determined, find a nice video that promises to help me understand the “recipe,” and within about 30 minutes I have given up.
    It’s like trying to follow a supposedly simple cookie recipe, except the recipe is impossibly dizzying:
    You’re going to start by measuring out the flour, baking powder, and other dry ingredients. So, you’ll need 4 cups of flour for this particular recipe, which is for every third Wednesday after a full moon. The 4 cups should be all-purpose flour, unless you’re between the age of 26 and 53, in which case you’ll use whole wheat flour (and on Thursdays this is completely different, but I’ll get to that later, in minute 385,719 of video #16). If you’re male, the whole wheat flour should be organic, and you should mix it 50/50 with pastry flour, unless you’re a redhead. [Redheads should use self-rising flour, but you’ll have to adjust your baking powder by the square root of 1/3 the sum total weight of all ingredients, which you won’t know until you completely finish the recipe, which may never happen.] Females will actually use the same flour, but mix it with the other dry ingredients in a slightly different order, just because. For the baking power, if you wear a 28-34 size belt, you’ll use 1/8 tablesooon less per inch of waistline, and add yellow food coloring just after you mix the dry and wet ingredients. Now, if it’s summer, skip the last 2 steps and go to step 14, but do step 11 after step 23. . .
    And now I’m just eating really crappy store-bought cookies again.

    Stop all the veiled, or sometimes not so veiled, criticism of the Christian Prayer Book. The only difference between the 4-book Liturgy of the Hours and Christian Prayer is the length, which is not a measure of which is better. You should be aware that some religious communities use the book of Christian Prayer exclusively, the Order of Carmelites Discalced for one. This in no way means that these orders are inferior or not as much given to a prayer life as those that use the -4-volume version. Better to do the shorter version well than to do the longer version posthaste or inattentively. In prayer, quality is more important than volume. That being said, thank you for running through the parts of Christian Prayer for us beginners. It's something that is very helpful.

I do all the morning prayers as well as the evening and have now moved on to the Office of Readings and the Proper of Saints which are more complete on the larger edition.

    • @cmcnicholas
      @cmcnicholas  Před 2 lety +1

      I am not 100% sure of your question... the Christian Prayer book (and the full 4 volume set) are designed for year-round use for ALL years.
      The new books usually come with a guide that DOES change from year to year. But the guide is not *required* although very helpful, especially when just starting out.
      I am going to assume it is that small white booklet you are referring to as you probably got a 2021 version in your new book. Those you can pick up on Amazon or your local Christian/Catholic shop for under $5.00. Or you can order direct from the manufacturer for $2.50.
      BE CAREFUL ORDERING.. there are four different versions: 2 for Christian Prayer and 2 for Liturgy of the Hours (4 volume). For each, there is a regular version and a large-type version. Your book has a code on the back cover and/or on the very first printed page in the lower left corner; most likely 406. Make sure the code matches the guide.

      @Winston-op5de Před rokem +2

      There is only one version but yearly you have to buy the guide for about $2.50. It tells you what pages you will find the information you need for a particular day. That is what they are trying to teach us here. Below I have posted information, if you live in the USA. You buy a book monthly for $7.00 dollars and it is easy to use as you don't have to learn how to use it. Start with page one and all the prayers: Morning, Evening and Nigh are listed. So it is just like reading a book. Convenient but I little expensive. as you would have to buy that for 3 years. And then you would have all the prayers and can start on the 4th year using the book you bought on January the first year.

    • @cmcnicholas
      @cmcnicholas  Před 4 lety +1

      Don't feel lost! You are working on improving your relationship with God. He is not going to zap you from on high for messing up... take it in stages. Get to know the layout of your book first... take a few days to thumb through cover to cover to get a feel for where everything is. Read the Ordinary section repeatedly... then read it again! Once you grasp the pattern and know where to go in the book, you're ready to conquer it! Hopefully your book came with the St. Joseph's Guide booklet. Use it. You're going to miss some things when starting out... don't give up. If you need to start out only doing 1 prayer a day, or 1 prayer every two days, that's just fine too... build up at your own pace and enjoy the journey!

      Wikipedia has a good description...
      "In the liturgy of the post-Vatican II Roman Rite, Ordinary Time is that part of the Christianliturgical year that lacks the distinctive characters of the Paschal Triduum, Eastertide, Lent, Christmastide, and Advent.[1] and is divided into two periods: that between Christmastide and Lent, and that between Eastertide and Advent."
      If you plan on buying the individual volumes that make up the 4 volume set, today you would need Volume IV, Ordinary Time Weeks 18-34. As of this writing, September 17, 2019, we are in week 24. Advent begins December 1st at which point you will need Volume I.
