"Thrown Together: Tradition, Apprenticeship & Individualism," Richmond 2024 - A Documentary Segment

In March 2024, Mark Hewitt designed, curated, and presented a monumental exhibition entitled "Thrown Together: Tradition, Apprenticeship, and Individualism” in conjunction with the annual conference of the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts in Richmond, VA. This national ceramic exhibition celebrated the contemporary expression of North Carolina's rich and complex pottery traditions, showcasing the work of Hewitt and his six apprentices who operate their own successful enterprises in North Carolina: Daniel Johnston, Matt Jones, Alex Matisse, Joseph Sand, Lara O’Keefe, and Stillman Browning-Howe.
This bold, ceramic exhibition of over 150 pots by Mark Hewitt and his North Carolina based former apprentices examines the relationship between tradition and individualism, and the way apprenticeship influences aesthetic choices, illuminating how together they continue to invigorate a dynamic Southern aesthetic.

Thanks for the update. I was reading the other day about succession in the Raku family. The master, who was in his 70's, has retired and his son, in his 50's, has taken over the head of the family pottery business.
Apparently this has been a pattern for a few hundred years.
The retired master continues to work, without the burden of being the star.
Maybe it's an amateur status. Making pots for the love of the craft.
