Every phone with software locks should automatically get a repairability score of 0
I agree.
It's still way too high, should be at least -10 score
I agree.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HARDWARE LOCKS? (Like the fairphone and google pixel's touch ID.)
@@CatmanPiano Google pixel doesn't count while it's correct the fingerprint reader is paired to the motherboard Google provides the software to re-pair it free of charge to everyone it's a webpage
@@oliver_lauritsen_oa fucking Google, why they have to be best company and simultaneously be the biggest data shits. 😑
I think legislation is the only way to save us from losing ownership of our devices.
Those that care stopped buying.
@@ShainAndrews it’s hard
How long do you expect to own devices to me 5 years is a good number
@@mattpolton3802 You need to define "devices". Cell phones are lucky to receive two years of software updates. That is a security issue.
@@ShainAndrews it is change mine is get updated for 3 or 4 years a s21 plus it only the low end like a01
I'd really love to see your opinions on some of Sony's phones, I feel they are unfortunately the only ones left who actually innovate and they look really appealing as they have OS and kernel device trees available freely. They're kind of hard to get in Australia as they kinda flopped but I feel like it might actually be worth it to import
I have an Xperia 1 mk 2 and the main reason I bought it is the headphone jack. I am really not looking forward to buying my next phone in a year or 2. Sony phones are great but they aren't selling well so let's just hope they keep making them for a bit longer lol.
@@trevor245 Sony phones are not selling well because of the following reasons:
- pricing is way too much
- Sony has one of the worst track records when it comes to reliability, OS stability and updates
Many people, including myself, lost the trust towards Sony after their many failed attempts at making a single phone last long.
@@nonci6 Pricing really isn't that bad tbh. Atleast it wasn't for the mark 3 which is the last release I kept up with. And also os is still up to date on my phone, most android phones don't really get supported with system updates for very long so I don't think sony really under performs in that aspect either.
@@trevor245
Yep! The same reason for me getting mine!
@Дмитро Кравчик Е-15 I think by “last long” they mean more than 1 year software update, I’m still annoyed that the ZV1 Compact only got one update to Android 9
Nice roundup of the major 2022 releases of phones.
I'd agree with you in that, if I was a phone technician, I'd happily repair a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel, whilst probably encouraging even the home user to repair their Fairphone 4. The Nothing Phone, however, is totally different, and I'd have to warn the customer of possible damage.
As for Apple's offerings, I'd flat out refuse to work on an iPhone 14/14 Pro (or even a 13/13 Pro or 12/12 Pro) and send the customer to Apple.
Oh, and I also like that you ask for a sub AFTER the video and not before I have seen anything from you, like many others do. Thumbs up for this.
It's not a flagship, but I just picked up the Samsung XCover 6 Pro, which has a replaceable battery, dual SIM, and a micro SD card slot. It was designed for enterprise, so I assume the components aren't paired to the board, but don't know for certain; would you consider giving it a look? It's a longshot, but I'm hoping that if it picks up enough steam on the consumer market, Samsung and other manufacturers might start to have second thoughts about gluing everything together.
I had an Xcover 4 for a while, and it was nice to have the detachable battery and back plate
I hear that the xcover is garbage:/
For all the new features on modern phones, in some ways we have gone backwards.
LG used to have all those features on their flagship G3 and G4 many years ago (before LG's management ran their phones division into the ground). A spare battery or two were great for traveling.
@@Maximus20778 its not supposed to be like the s lineup, its a midrange phone which focuses on durability and if you just dont like samsung thats not a valid argument
The xcover 6 pro is awesome. It even has an IP68 water resistance rating I'm pretty sure
1:43 If it wasn't for this, the iPhone would have been one of the most repairable iPhones on the market.
Which is sad that company would get away with doing evil shit like this

Thank you hugh for doing these awesome videos. Respect.
Thanks Hugh, for taking the time and effort in doing these videos. Greatly appreciated Mate.
Anyone else remember the old Androids that were easy to open? The back used to just come off.
my last phone was like that since my family doesn't have enough money to buy phones often, let alone new ones. This one is faster, but besides that, i really miss the old one...
I remember when simply dropping your phone was enough to accidentally do a full teardown.
I still use my 4 year old mate 20 pro. Had a screen and battery replacement done 3rd party as both died screen went green and battery stopped holding charge. No software locks on either
While the EU law regarding USB-C is a step in the right direction, the laws need to be more stringent regarding right to repair.
@@octavius8562 I hope the legislation takes affect sooner so their drive won't succeed.

Would love you to take a look at some flagship Xiaomi phones.
The iPhone is definitely worse, having to interact with customer services to "unlock" a replacement screen, I love apple products but dumb 'features' like this keep me away
only reason I stick with Apple is because everything works with my other devices as well as being visually impaired... voiceover blows talkback out of the water any day
Thanks for this!

Great video Hugh.
I was amazed by the repairability of my Ulefone Power Armor 13. Modular internal design, held together with screws, sealed with a reusable rubber gasket and no glue or software locks to be found.
Would really like to see your professional repair analysis on this phone since I didn't dare to take it further apart than to remove the back panel to clean the speaker mesh.

Great work this year
I just want to thank you for your detailed videos. The adheisive on my iPhone 11 Pro Max was loose which caused some moisture on the inside of the camera. Thanks to you and your videos I felt confident enought to fix it. And I did it.
Hadn't heard of Fairphone before, thanks for introducing me to them.
Your videos are the best
Samsung has given a rebuttal to Fairphone with the Xcover 6 pro (removable plastic back, battery that pops out and all the same size phillips head screws) and with an added middle finger, has a headphone jack.
If it had an S pen and IR blaster it'd be my dream phone.
Can't get it from mymobile yet though and Kogan's third party seller has it for $100 AUD more than the other places.
Not really a middle finger but more having a bigger budget by factors compared to fairphone. They also seem to try and use parts which are not custom made therefore a smaller carbon footprint.
Being said, great move by Samsung! Glad to see other folk following the path of repairability
The least repairable phone of 2022 is definitely the Nothing phone
It may be the hardest to disassemble but at least you don't need 2000$ worth of additional equipment to reprogram the replacement parts so you can keep the features

One thing that prevented from getting the fairphone is the lack of OLED display, since I am too used to OLED at this point. If it had that or at least was a swap-in replacement, I would have 100% bought it. But alas, for now not an option for me
And a friggin 3.5mm jack. Can't believe a company such as Fairphone removed it.
@@s2000. and to think, Sony is still proudly including it. I think they got gready and decided to push some buds, which are ironically so crappy to repair that it destroys Fairphone's rep
Plus they have a rollback protection, partially even more restrictive than Apple. Upgrade your phone to the latest version available via OTA update, then no way back for you and most custom roms would then brick your device.
A company like Fairphone should push custom roms, not prevent them, by including such BS.
I hope they improve on fair phone 4 in next version. It is a great device. Hope they will be able to reduce size
Interesting stuff
Nice video
Great stuff... You missed Sony though:)
Apple literally wants the air to be contaminated!
Something worth looking into I feel like is the new maintenance mode that samsung added with one ui 5.0

3:34, nice :)
It should be mentioned that the Samsung phone's bootloader can only be unlocked on models with an Exynos chip, while those with Snapdragon chips cannot without finding and exploiting a yet to be discovered bug.
This is what I’d do if I was apple:
I’d sell GENUINE replacement parts for every device (for about £10 more than the competitive ones on the market), and they’d come with a code that you can calibrate to your device. I have no idea why they don’t do this. They’d turn a fair profit.
bc its more profitable to sell whole phones
Disposable products are more profitable.
@@luminism I suppose, but apple (and other companies in general) have made SO MUCH money, that they don’t really _need_ to go for the profit. I mean, the iPhone 14 hasn’t made much money. The only people who bought it over the 13 are the people who cared about when it was released. They are literally the same phone.
@@Alex-ug9wx they're a business, they need to go for the profit because it's in the best interest of their shareholders. it is what it is
@@octavius8562 apple has made plenty of money already. The iPhone 14 was a flop, also, I’m plenty wealthy already 😆
Brilliant dude!
This ranking is MUCH MORE reliable than the iFixit repairability score
How hard it would be for Fairphone to make next model to have backplate installed with multiple tiny screws going around the phone and have replasable rubber casket going around the phones to prevent water getting in?
Would be amazing if you could disassemble the Sony Xperia 10 iv phone. It has a plastic back panel, so I would imagine it's fairly easy to remove it (I have cracked glass back panels in the past). Also I see all kinds of spare parts and new battery are available for it for a fair price online.
Yeah it is nice sony still manage to release a midrange phone when their smartphone lineup crippled every year in terms of revenue
@@mtaufiqn5040 wdym? It's doing better than the old Xperia
@@keonxd8918i'm pretty sure the lack of innovative design, feature and high price tag are the main issues with sony's recent smartphone bussiness
@@mtaufiqn5040 Yes, I think their top of the line phones are insanely overpriced compared to what they are. Also 4k display in a phone, what a joke, immediately crippling battery life for a feature that has no real world benefit and only looks good on paper. But their midrange 10 iv phone is really amazing, that's the phone I decided to buy after quite a bit of contemplation, and I have zero regrets. I am just eager to find someone online, who would finally do a teardown video about it.
@@mtaufiqn5040 ironic when all the iPhones and Samsung's are literally on the same design for years, plus removing features is innovative I guess? That's my issue with the smartphone industry, removing features like the headphone jack, SD card slot. I'll never purchase a phone without them.
Cool 🙂🔥
Jeff, from having watched all your videos I’m concerned about my local (uk) repair shop ( that i very much trust with my phone) isn’t going to be able to replace my battery in my IPhone XR and still be able too know what it’s health status is, is that correct?? hi hugh nice vid it is me Rommy you met me on Wednesday
Maybe one day there won't be a power struggle between manufacturers and consumers. Perhaps we can encourage and support those pathways one day, but the current business model and how things operate I believe clash with that vision. Incentives could be key to get the future we want and need, but it seems like a futile uphill battle I assume.
Are there any good phones that are still small size?
Yes
Is it possible to replace iphone 13 logic board with iphone 12 or iphone x? Please
Foe Apple you have to use special (and very expensive) Chinese tool to bypass the software locks , and iCloud lock cannot be bypassed anyway
any suggestions to remove forgotten icloud password from a ipad mini . the original owner died
What about the ZenFone 9?
These other OEMs need to take a page out of Fairphone's book
While I think repairability is definitely important, I also think that Software Support is heavily overlooked. I mean, how many phones have enough software support to use them more than 3 years. Samsung is definitely on a good way have soppurt for up to 5 years for their new A53 but it is still nowhere near as good as the software support on an PC or laptop. I can still run windows 10, a properly supported os, on a laptop that is 15 years old and have no drawbacks whatsoever. As long as this isn't the case for phone's, we will still be buying new phones every 3 years or so.
the locks make them unrepairable, but can't knock apple's software support on their phones - the iPhone 6S (and SE 2016) got 6 major OS versions, and 6+ years of security patches, and the 5S is at 9 years of security updates and got 5 major OS versions (the latest 12.x version for security patches released only ~2 months ago!)
Hence why many android phones are bootloader unlockable
A pixel 2 can run android 13 now
@@NissocoMC while I think a unlocked bootloader is nice and all. I would really prefer updates from the manufacturer. Because they are definitely faster and easier to install. Also I find it rather hard to get hold of Android images to install on my old phones. I still have a Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 here and would really like to update it but all the images I found were really shady.
Fairphone removed the headphone jack last time I heard about it, unless they backtracked?
Pretty much all companies have removed the headphone jack - which you can blame Apple for with their iPhone 7! IMO, the iPhone 7 should have been blacklisted on all major carriers for being anti-consumer.
@@TheSpotify95 lmao blacklisted cuz of the headphone jack? It's been 7 years grow up
Hi Hugh! I am a pretty big fan of your channel and I have a question. Do you think there will be batteries that are held in in a different way in the future? Screws maybe?
Batteries are already held with screws in some devices. They are stuck down to prevent or make repairs hard.
@John Sinclair they are phones they can be removable in 2022 it's just not common anymore. Look at the fair phone and the Samsung xcover.

Still on my Asus Zenphone 6. Had to replace the USB-C jack which I got on Ebay for cheap. Also replaced my fingerprint reader cause dumbass accidentally snapped the cable whole replacing the USB-C module (Completely my fault) and I also replaced the battery. As per the battery and fingerprint scanner I had to order from Asus directly as it was hard to find those parts on ebay, etc also Asus phones aren't necessarily mainstream enough where thete are a ton of parts available. With that at least you can readily order whatever part you need from the OEM at reasonable prices although the shipping is more pricey but still way cheaper overall than Apple. Point being at least the phone is easily repaired and parts are available as it should be.
If Apple really actually cared about the environment as they claim, they won't even think about doing this. Probably going to avoid buying an iPhone till they stop doing this.

I moved from electronic repairs to car repairs. And what can I say. Compared to car manufacturers, tech companies are holy. Imagine macbook, that requires you to remove screen first to gain access to back cover. And than if you put it back together you will need 1000 buks/month software to get it started, and if you use some other software it might start burning.
what about Xiaomi phones?
