  • An instructional frame drum lesson, focusing on sequences which incorporate a style of "crisp" double-stroke finger roll. Enjoy!

    PS. The drum which is played in this video is an 14" Cooperman Tar with a Renaissance head. www.cooperman.com

    Hey Ken! Thanks for sharing this. What is the other type of finger rolls that you are using?

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  Před 5 lety

      The other roll I use is similar to a snare drum "closed" or "buzz" roll. The way I play it involves three fingers on each hand - ring, middle, index (RH) followed by ring, middle, index (LH).

      It's really simple roll when you break it down and play it at slow tempo but takes time to build muscle memory to play it fluently ... for me the hardest part in learning frame drum is to find someone to show you how to play certain elements, how to practice them and how to incorporate that elements in rhythms.
      I guess the same roll can be played in two other ways that give different feel to it. I can start with a dominant hand like you (right) and play ring, middle, index finger + middle finger on the left hand (4 strokes) ... or roll can start with middle finger on a left hand followed by middle and index on a right hand and finish with a left middle finger.

    Thanks!!! Is there also a post about which framedrum would be an advice?

      I've been planning such a video, but it's not ready yet! However, if you're looking for a frame drum, I would recommend one with a 16" diameter, and a shell depth of at least 3". The Cooperman Tar is my favourite, but there are also other good options from Remo and Meinl.

    Can I do index-middle? I found it's a lot easier to me compared with middle-index.

    I can’t seem to do the roll using my left hand at all for the ta ka part of ki ta ta ka no matter how hard I try🥴 Any suggestions?

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi. Be patient with yourself, for one! Maybe try different combinations of fingers than what I demonstrate here. Experiment to find a way that works better for you. But really, even though it's not exciting (!) practicing slowly will hopefully make it easier for you to build comfort with this type of roll. Cheers...

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  Před 7 lety

      ki ta ta ka is the phrase... you can use the playback controls on CZcams to slow down the video, if that's helpful!

      You tube has option to slow down videos. try it :)
