Hi Cookie, “olá” from Portugal. I use all your indicators for the last 51 years plus the Best : seagulls always pointing to the wind ! Also yatch top of the mast wind indicators…. And …. fumes from chumminie ! All the Best ! Today I beat my PB … 16 kts ! Very happy

Indicators at the top of masts are a great point for static boats that haven’t spun to wind! Great point! 👍👍

@@Cookiesports Seagulls are always - as you say - at balance point , at mast, booms, High points ,Best pointer ever!
      Seagulls are the Best 😀😀😀😀
What about a aeronáutical windsock? Direction and wind force +- 1, 2, 3,4,5 and plus 5 Beaufort !
Luckly we have a aeronáutical windsock /manga in the shipyard plus another outside the Seixal Bay @ navy hidrografic institut 1000yards alway. Driving for a session we have here mandatory on high and long bridges windsocks both sides…. Sail size decision based on meteo TAF @ METAR (closest AirPort for free plus this térmic winds verification

@@jaimetrabucho59 Haha! Of course, the socks are a great indicator of strength as well as direction! My usual spots are missing both gulls and socks like that! 🤩

Thanks Cookie for packing so much information into a neat little video that we all can come back to and review. The animation was a huge help to consolidate both what needs to be practiced on the water and the motivation behind it. The explanation that “a 15 degree wind shift can take us 500 meters away from where we originally were” was an eye opener for me that finally led to understanding just why all this is so vital to master. It has taken a long, long time to sink in. But now thanks to your coaching and patience, I hope to see some progress in my skills.

Thanks! I originally made without the animation, but think it made it all much clearer!

Thank for the great video. Checking an hourly forecast is the first thing I do before my exit to a sea.

Always great to check the forecast, however taking that forecast and translating it to what you see and feel on the beach is the important part of this video

Also be aware of tidal flow when using moored boats to indicate wind direction.

Very true, already noted in the description of this video 🤩

Cookie, another great video and good to see you back for another season! Ref boats at anchor/moored lying into wind, there are some spots where tide will be a bigger influence, thus knowing your spot and using multiple sources of info is a must.🤙

Great point on tide… all this is assume no moving water.
I’ll add this to the description 👍

Great Video, Just one note when looking at boats direction for the wind. In the med there is only a small tidal range but here we have 3m tidal range. Often boats will face with the current instead of the wind. Sometimes those are together and sometimes they oppose. (that can also impact your upwind angle)

I can't use the ear method as I have loud tinnitus and I'm pretty deaf..😆I'm pretty good with the others.

Hi Cookie, about 1 mt of a light ribbon on the top of the sail do the job.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 měsíci

Seems a bit unnecessary, the Sail does the same job, as to all the other indicators. On the bay here we have more than 500 windsurfers on the water at any given moment, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone ever with a ribbon on top of their sail!

500 metres from your target point equals 500 metres closer to Zeus Bar - win win!
