Today marks the beginning of a new series specifically for CZcams, the controlling session are completley unedited and will usually consist of one hour of controlling.
I am making these in the hope that people who don't feel to comfortable with getting on VATSIM gain some more confidence through watching these - in that we are all human and everyone makes mistakes, we don't expect you to be perfect!
Today we enjoy a one hour session on London South which focused mainly on Heathrow, Gatwick & London City aircrafts during the session.
Any questions please do feel free to comment down below! Also, make sure you chuck a cheeky like, comment and subscribe!

I get people flying for fun but it is crazy to me that people do ATC for fun. Y'all are absolute BOSSES to do this!
it's about keeping your brain sharp, and realism, many also use it as training or keeping the skill alive if they are off for some reason.
To me it's like solving a puzzle in real time. I think if you like intense RTS games you'll like ATC
is it a real person talking or no
yes@@officerJP647
I just seem to be more interested in this aspect rather than flight. Coordination, strategy, communication, problem solving.
Oh my goodness. I thought just normal piloting on the radio was hard but this just brought it to a whole new level! No wonder why there are so many more pilots compared to ATC!
thats why its one of the most stressful jobs in the world
@@forsaturn4629 I’m fairness london control is one of the busiest bits of controlled airspace in the world. Most controllers also wouldn’t say it’s a stressful job, I love it
@@benr970 individual doesn’t speak for everyone. It’s still a fact that its one of the most stressful job in the world
@@forsaturn4629 very true, however if you found the job stressful you wouldn’t stay doing it. High pressure yes, stressful no
@@benr970 It really depends where you are, and people tend to stay for its high demand and pay, not because they wanted to.
Just learned about VATSIM yesterday so this was great to watch. Fascinating to see and makes me want to learn more. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome to VATSIM, Chris! - all of my streams over on Twitch showcase VATSIM from both the flying and controlling side. Pop by and say hi when you are next free!

I’ve come to VATSIM from the AI ATC, haven’t flown without VATSIM since 👍

@@LONController Hi can you do like a ground and tower video I’m finishing up my atc acadamy and so I can like see what it looks like
As a Cuban immigrant in the US who has lived in Atlanta for the past 8 years and got used to the southern US accent I am very afraid to ever encounter with a British ATC. I understood 1.3% of everything you said 😂
yep! i fly in Southern California so our atc is veryyy different from this haha
As someone who lives about 30 minutes north of Atlanta in the middle of nowhere, I second this.
you need the Queens English
@@johnboy8846 Oath
@@johnboy8846 American English is older than British English look it up. American English was how British sounded when America had its first colonies then French actually started bastardizing the British English so ours is actually the older, more proper English
As a semi-regular VATSIM pilot, this video makes me really appreciate how invaluable preparation is on the pilot's end. The amount of crucial time someone can cost you (as the controller) by having to repeat instructions really stood out to me; especially those with three or four elements - e.g. leave VOR on heading xx and expect Y arrival. By the way, the Shamrock (17J) pilot sounded like a professional! That's the kind of pilot I would like to emulate ;)
Hi Raygen,
Yeah we love preparation from the pilots, makes our job a lot easier! - controlling TWR positions and GND positions are great because you can simply tell them to more or less stop... however, in the air... they just keep moving :P
@@LONController In particular what preparation would you guys recommend taking before flying an approach?
just the SIM we want to make mistake
@@jamiedavinci1328 know your flight plan and procedures and have them open on a second screen to quickly reference when being contacted.
Be ready to receive and remember what they said at any time.
Plan ahead what might happen, eg I just did an approach where the runway was occupied until the last second because the guy on there didn't start rolling. I had altitude and heading already set for a go-around as always but checked the charts once again to really already know what instructions I'd be getting when asked to go around.
Same goes for descent planning, know the altitude limits and the approach and when to expect what.
Lastly they might change your route a bit, for example a direct to waypoint, often that's one on your route so youd know it already but otherwise have some way of navigating there ready, either the FMC already set to the flight plan screen for quick entry, or some database like skyvector open to quickly reference frequencies etc.
It's hard the first few times but gets much easier when you know what to expect after the third time you're on there. I highly recommend some less busy routes for starters. Maybe something with just a departure tower but a landing in a unicom area so you can learn one thing at a time, at least that's what I did.
What an awesome guy. for someone that is scared to death going chat in Vatsim, you make things looks so easy and comfortable. Thanks for your service!!!
It really is a thing of just doing it, I did it on accident the first time and the controller basically begged me to use voice.. It eventually is way more relaxed to use voice instead of chat
Ok, I have no idea what's happening most of the time and I have no idea how you manage it...but it's fascinating and impressive all the same.
you could do a serie that shows all the different stations (del, ground, tower, approach, center) and what is different in comparison to the one before
I see how this could be a lot of fun but my brain could not keep up 😂
This is SO insane! I used to have an account with VATSIM more than 15 years ago.. but the audio quality (voice codec used) was to be desired, to the point it was unintelligible, and there was no will to fix it from VATSIM. And never returned again. But from what I hear now, I was blown away! They finally fixed it. Audio quality mimics the real thing! Will try to log-in again, and see if I can reactivate my account! By the way, I like your controlling! Respect!
I like how the 'pilots" have background noise like a real acft
Looks so complicated yet you make it look so easy, Great to watch.
Just had my first VATSIM flight the other day. Very interesting to see what’s keeping everything running. Thanks
Thanks for sharing. Very fun to see "the other side" of the Vatsim experience.
@LondonController You sir are a machine! the amount of coolness under pressure is unbelievable
Dude, you are a machine! It was great to see how you keep us pilots sweet.
I have to add, this is, pardon my french, bloody marvelous. However, I live in the Eastern region, 126.780 so just off the north sea humber area. Have been interested in air traffic control for a number of years and follow mainly military traffic but civvy is just as interesting. I really want to have a go at controlling traffic and this is just the thing for me.
Watched this a few months ago, found it again and ended up watching the whole video again. Really entertaining stuff appreciate it!
Even when I was a kid I always thought radio communication and co-ordinating and co-operating was the coolest thing! This is an incredible display of clear communication and sick multitasking. GG's my guy

mr jamie out here helping the community. what a lad
You know me mate! ;)
Wow! I’ve watched a few pilot POV videos and have appreciated how professional the ATC folk have been.
Seeing it from the ATC POV is an eye-opener! Very, very impressed.
How do you interact with other controllers? How do you decide who gets what aircraft?
And your ability to talk to camera and listen to the incoming radio comms is impressive as well. 😂👏👏
On another note: I’m guessing Heathrow is a popular airport flightsim pilots around the world; the different accents must make life … interesting.
The scariest part of Vatsim is when the controller says negative
Very interesting to see the controllers perspective for a change! Thanks a lot!
This is soo cool putting a face to the voice I hear so commonly out of gatwick !
Seriously, how cool is this community? Can't wait to get setup.
Man, watching this all come together around 42:00 is so awesome.

Long time aviation fan, never looked at the ATC side of flightsims though for some reason. Great job and I can feel the excitement just watching, heh!
Keep up the good work and lots of respect to ATC, on AND offline! :)
Great job! Its very good to learn as a Atc trainee :)
Best of luck with the training! :)
@@LONController Thank you ^^
A quick brain!.... impressive. Thank you for your vatsim service and for posting this :)
This only scares me more to go onto vatsim XD
Hats off to all Air Traffic Controllers..l thought our job as pilots was tough.. now l have an understanding of what is going on on ATC screens when u are been controlled
Holy cow, god mode controlling. I used to control on VATSIM, Toronto FIR-CYYZ C1 rating, but I hated center control, I would much rather do approach/depature. Over the pond CYYZ arrival was always fun.
look at these series
Great video, I'm also thinking about joining Vatsim.
Also I hope you can make a video about explain all the Chart, aircraft list include the top bar in the screen that contain in Sector inbound, outbound and beside the metars list with all the meaning behind numbers and letters. For example: ASSR, SSR and other else.
Great video, loved it. First ATC video. Thinking of getting into it and this was a nice intro

looks realistic enough. thou i noticed, people are being placed on vectors and altitude changes, when they aren't really necessarily needed, almost doing it just to do it, in which i don't think they do that in real life.
I'm a Emirates pilot and you sound like a real life ATC omg.
A double upload and a start of CZcams series? I can't complain :D
You are built differently to normal humans. Unreal! So impressive
Made out with an ATC controller at a club and she was telling we about her job which peaked my interest and eventually landed me on this video. Not sure if I would ever choose to do this as a career but it’s quite interesting non the less.
I'm about to start Navy flight school and have no prior flying experience... ATC communication seems so intimidating!
It can be, but it is like everything - you have to start somewhere! - the more you fly/control, the better you get!
Then you’ve got me “hey so uh, yeah I lost my piece of paper with the taxi instructions, yeah it’s a 2 mile taxi but uhhhh can we get a read back on more time?” The tenth time that day
Kudos to you, mate! I've started using VatSim as a pilot in the past two weeks and I thought that was stressful!!
i don't understand anything but i so cool to watch

Come on, it's not that hard, it's totally worth it! Way back when I was doing LGGG_CTR (basically the whole Greek FIR) on IVAO I was having the time of my life, the whole mix of airliners at the major airports, as well as VFR traffic, people doing pattern work and others flying in and out of the smaller airports was great fun, it kept on my toes. It helped me reduce my smoking, too! A small trick I had was that for smaller airports where there was just one flight I'd give them their clearance and then clear them to start and taxi to the holding point, then call ready.
Never thought i would look at a guy talking numbers and letters for one hour but.... here i am...
Hi mate, great video would love to see more of these! Quick question: I'm currently an S1 for VATSIM UK and was wondering how long it would take me to get up to being an area controller like you? Cheers,
Matt
what level of atc are you now?
Great controlling Jamie - Keep up the good work
I can't fly off vatsim on MSFS any more, tbh. It makes it so fun and immersive. Yes London airspace is a challenge haha, but it's very rewarding.

So it's an ATC network that latches onto whatever simulation you're using? i.e. FSX, FS2020, X-Plane, etc?
precisely
Yeah, no matter what sim you're using, you're put in the same network. The only place where XP and MSFS users coexist peacefully :)
Yes, this was good
23:38 did that guy read back a landing clearance after you’d only told him to descend glide path? Presumably only tower can issue him that?
Edit: nope he said cleared ILS, not clear to land. My bad.
This makes me want to buy the game London Control again. Not ready for VATSIM yet..
this is so fking amazing im addicted to watching m8

Amazing vid gotta try this been stuck with import madness 3d for years this is next level
Hi, great video. Q if I may:
What happens if a pilot doesn’t respond straight away? How long is too long to wait for a response?
While on vatsim...it is expected of you to respond straight meanwhile...it might take like 5 seconds due to the fact that sometimes, we are writting the instructions on a paper...and aome controllers will text you shortly after giving you an instruction. Vatsim is fun
You, good sir, and all your ilk, are magicians.
i would really love to be able to fly propperly on vatsim. i managed once to depart from eham but then my computer gave up. the most difficult for me is to listen and understand what atc is telling me
This is superb, would be good to see some quieter airspace occasionally so you can talk through what you’re doing a bit more
Hopefully you will like our new videos!
Thanks for doing this - very interesting

Just about to finish writing a major proposal and will then set up VATSIM for XPLANE11.5 so help me improve my comms in preparation for my first (UK) solo and cross country. I flew 5 hours solo in the US back in 1998 but didn't continue flying when I returned to the UK - but have to say, I find the whole VATSIM thing daunting.
My brain hurts….😂😂😂 I’d have no chance using this
How do you become a vatsim controller?
Super cool! How to become a ATC in VATSIM as you?
I've downloaded and installed 3 different ATC clients (vstars, vatsys, euroscope) this morning and it's either cryptic in the extreme, or no support offered, or the developer was last seen online 9 years ago, or multiple days or even weeks of study and research promised or implied before one can put the software to use, or any number of other frustrations that end up in a prompt uninstall. Have experience in US Navy air and surface warfare tactical environment, 4.5 years in a ATC environment (Portland Tower/Tracon), many thousands of hours in flight sims, many more thousands of hours in much simpler (apparently) ATC sims (Radar Chaos), and yet the VATSIM universe is infinitely more complex and completely cryptic. Is there any possible way to dive into this realm with software that does what you seem to be doing with ease. I'm confounded. Have a lot of respect for what you're doing and would love to join you, but need a heading to point me in the right direction. Am interested in ATC not piloting btw... Have got as far in my real world private pilot cert as my cross country solo btw. (Robinson R22). Cheers and thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Hi Scott. I know it’s been three weeks but hopefully you see this.
VATSIM’s ATC software is different based on which region you join, and each admittedly has a bit of a learning curve. Each division of VATSIM offers much more detailed documentation and personalized instruction on the installation and use of their preferred software. Taking VATUSA, my home division as an example:
Once you join VATUSA as a controller (www.vatusa.net/info/join) you complete “Computer Based Training” (CBT) blocks that present the basics of installing our “beginner” software, VRC, and the basics of air traffic control, the latter of which should not be difficult as it is designed for individuals with no prior ATC experience, real world or virtual.
After this, you take a “Basic S1” multiple choice exam. Upon passing, you can join one of 21 ARTCCs, each covering every facility directly below the enroute facility. Each facility will assign you an instructor to introduce the basics of controlling on VATSIM. This instruction is much more detailed than any manual our controlling clients have.
Unfortunately I cannot speak for any other division of VATSIM, but the general process of joining as a controller can be found here: www.vatsim.net/air-traffic-control/training
Hopefully this has been helpful.
there is a vSTARs tutorial online
Jesus, you sound exactly like Eric from the "Sex Education" series^^ Both from accent and voice character. XD
I like this content i would like to try controlling on vatsim. Question what sequence do controllers use to determine which aircraft they will contact next ?.
Hi Ricardo, great question!
So most adopt the process of scaninng - this is gonna be more about those aircraft in the air. There is another type of communication priority for the Ground controllers. So the place we always look is around the extended centerlines, when we establish the aircraft they must be within 40° of the runway heading when establishing. If you have flown on VATSIM before you may have heard "you've missed the localiser" or "establishing from the north" - a lot of the time there is only 2-3 blips of radar trail from an aircraft before we have to turn them final to establish - so we focus our efforts on these first.
Moving further out, we look at the RMA's or better known as the Radar Manouvering Areas which are the areas in the close vicinity to an airport in which we vector, then we move to the airway channels close to the airports. And then finally, those that are on our sector boundary looking to enter.
But in simple terms, the sequence is purely determined on the situation. There may be a situation we need to deal with on the sector boundary to avoid a safety issues which may mean an aircraft has to go through the localiser - so we prioritse based on efficency, but more importantly safety.
What software do you use to see the plane and stuff
It looks like departures out of EGLC could potentially interfere with arrivals from the north into EGLL 27R/L?
They do, but they are held at 3000ft! - and the Heathrow stuff is at 4000ft!
mad respect :)
Very interesting, thanks for sharing
Thank you for this great and informative video. Small question of beginner (and French), why speak so quickly during radio exchanges?
Hey Franck, cheers for the kind words!
Very valid question... while we try to speak slow, you will notice the longer someone is controlling a busy sector, the quicker they pass messages. It has a lot to do with a lot of adrenaline - you can be controlling a LOT of aircraft at one time :P
However, sometimes radio calls have to be quick. For example, we turn an aircraft to intercept, we usually do that within 2 miles of the localiser - when we control so many aircraft we can sometimes leave them a bit late and try to quickly get the transmission in. If we leave an aircraft for too long they can go through the localiser, which can cause us a bit of a headache :P
Hey! i got a question. Do pilots need to be guided all the way through or do rhey have a path they always follow? It seems crazy they always need to be guided through a flight
10 mins in and loving it, no skipping the vido
Cheers Alex!
nice work. Why do you sometimes clear flights to "when established LOC, descend with glide", and others you clear for ILS? Is there a difference in these clearances? I've heared both in the London area, but can't figure out why anyone would use the way longer call of "when established".
Nice! I was just wondering what plugins you use/what would be good for observing while I wait for the OBS seminar?
ABSALUTLLY WHAT AN BENEFIT THANKS ALLOT THIS IS CAREERE PRO, WELL DONE MATE.🏅🎖🥉⬆
Wow, this is soo cool!!
Holy. Moly.
Love the video, I'm about to start flying on vatsim and I have a question. I tend to struggle programming STARs and SIDs into the GPS/FMC (due to out of date AIRAC), could I put "No STAR/SID" in the remarks section of the flight plan and ask for vectors? (Probably for a few flights until I can get a Navigraph subscription)
Yea, actually even in real life you are able to file a flight plan without a STAR or SID, if for some reason you are unable to comply with theirs requirements - for example lack of navigational equipment (f.e. RF-LEG, RNAV 1) or stated minimum gradient or speed. Then just file a plan with the latest point set as an entry STAR point and then IAF. In flight, if struggling with anything, just ask for vectors or some other clearence.
Awesome job. Only found out today that this was a thing, watched a pilot on line and thought ATC was a computer, couldnt believe after a quick chat that ATC was actually people work hard doing what you do. Amazing
Awesome video. You are legend
Wow this is impressive stuff !
wow that's intense lol
Nice, just getting into atc vids

Question: when you entered the frequency everything appeared following the right settings, im a controller too on Vatsim but this doesn’t happen to me, how do you do it?
16:32 QNH 996 what? Something missing there 😉
Why?
Always remember: 99% of the world uses the metric system. Not everything revolves around the USA
Mindblown 🤯
wow. you are so fast. you really know what youre doing
hello, I'm a new pilot and I am pretty sure I can do vatsim but concerned I may mess up readbacks due to my short term memory being bad. I can control the aircraft completely and use navigraph premium, I am just nervous so do my first flight with vatsim, do you think i'll do ok? also I fly Sri Lankan airlines, is "Srilankan503" acceptable as the callsign or would it have to be like "ALK503"?
do we have a so counter ?
