    Fun fact: Bucket makers don't use pine pitch. If the wood is dry and the bucket leaks, soak the bucket in water, the wood will swell and close up small cracks. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷

    Excellent work! Such a bottle could be useful in quite a few situations, as you mentioned. About ten years ago, when I was helping a friend of mine build cigar box guitars, he and I discussed the possibility of using such an inexpensive primitive musical instrument as a bug out kit. We thought about using carbon fiber material for the body of the guitar to make it durable, lightweight, and weather resistant. Basically, the guitar would be a box with a hinged lid, in which a small alcohol stove, bottle of fuel, lighter, and a few other items could be stored for a weekend getaway, and once everything is unpacked, you can also play yourself a few songs by the campfire.

    Nice job! spreading the pine pitch between the sections works better to seal the container. An alternative method is to burn out the cavity using hot coles and a hallo branch, stem or something similar as a tube to blow through and direct the burn and keep the cole hot. scraping the chard spots between coles speeds up the process. be careful not to use toxic wood. to boil water line a hole with hidel. clay or anything nontoxic to hold the water fill with water and drop heated rocks until boiling. be careful picking rocks, porous ones will absorb water and can explode while heating.

    • @karm65
      @karm65 Před 2 lety

      forgot to mention using clay or just water can help direct the burn if it gets too close to the sides.

    My Dad was in the desert but his canteen had a hole in it so he tossed it in the garbage at the first stop at the trading post. Dad popped in and bought supplies and the guide was worried when he saw him throw his canteen away. They were doing a geological expedition in Death Valley.
    So at the next stop after 30 minutes of hiking. My dad digs through his rucksack and pulls out his chemical cold pack and puts it into his rucksack while everyone was taking a sip of their hot water. After 10 minutes my Dad pulls out his first ice cold beer. After another 45 minutes of more hiking and looking at rocks they have another stop. More hot water for everyone my Dad activates another cold pack and 10 minutes later is enjoying another ice cold beer. Weak cold American beer but it is much better than hot canteen water. At the third stop Dad activates his last ice pack then drank his third beer and passed the other three around to everyone else. Everyone agreed my Dads solution was much better. Dad said the ice pack in the rucksack kept him nice and cool too. He made a lot of new friends on that excursion.

      that depends on your situation. in war or in areas with a lot of big dangerous predators (though i suppose many of those would more likely be scared off by that), yes. when you get lost on, say, a mountain in austria, not so important. i suppose she usually carries her water bottle with her and in a situation where being noisy is a risk, she'd be especislly careful not to use gear she'd have to loudly replace 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Well done. Next time look for a Gum tree.. When you find one cut near the base of the tree. The cut a section two times the length of you knife. Gum trees grow hollow. So take the Gum barrel and scrape the inside clean. Then make a wooden plug for each end. The end plugs have to be smooth and tight. Yes !!! 1972 Boy Scouts rule

  • @GManWrites

    You could use heated up pebbles to put inside to boil the water, just a thought. When I was younger I found a Navajo pottery which could hold a little over a gallon of water for transport. The bottom of the vase was covered with pinion pitch which would make it water proof. Love watching your videos…Merry Xmas..

    This is definitely a time consuming task. Best thing is to look for that piece of perfect wood when gettin your fire wood. Set it off to the side. Process you firewood and you can split that n set it back aside. When things are set up and you are relaxing, then you can whittle some more. Be able to spend more time on the cordage. When I made my first one I was told I did great following orders. Now see if I can figure out why it leaks. 🤣. When I split the wood at the start, I made that end the bottom. So the hatchet had smashed the wood leaving more of a gap for leaking.
    About the 6th one I got it right. Then I used the pitch glue on the inside. Skinny smear stick and fill the crack. Just don’t use the pitch with poop in it. Grind grass for the binder filler. Love the video. Keep them coming

    If you ever find yourself out in the woods and need to boil some water. You can find you a not rotten tree downed, Carve a bowl in the side of it. Find you some rocks and heat the rocks up Put your water in the bowled part that you carved in the log put the hot rocks in it. It will boil that water. Keep boiling for a bout a min. or 2 and then let cool. Then you can fill up your make shift canteen. Use some sticks to pick up the hot rocks from the fire. Don't place the rocks directly in the fire, create a coal bed I found is the best way to heat them up. Try this out. Get good at it. and when you need it. You'll know it. For those of you that don't already know this technique. Let me know what you do?

    Here in Michigan there are areas with stone outcropping where Native Tribes carved water catching pools. An example on Public access land would be Petroglyph on Germania Road, near Marlette, Mi. The trail loop is only about a 1/2 mile but one can see several water catching pools carved into the stone.
    If you go when an officer is present, the gate to the Petroglyphs will be opened and the officer will explain the stories told on the stone.

    Lilly, wonderful project video. You could boil water in your log canteen by finding several smooth, clean, dry stones. Heat them in the fire. When hot, pluck them up with 'chop sticks' - like twigs and drop them into the half-full canteen. Stones taken from underwater in a lake or stream might have small cracks with water inside - when in the fire they could burst. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.
