The Tantric Approach to Difficult Emotions

  • Dealing with difficult emotions in the tantric approach is similar to a man's relationship with stray cats. Rupert continues with the analogy and says the subdued, traumatised cats eventually come closer and enjoy the milk, and the peace.
The Kashmir Tantric approach is the path of inclusion, the outwards facing path, or the identification with All.
We take the emotion so deeply into ourself that we lose resistance to them. So that which we fear the most, these painful emotions, turns into that we love the most - peace.
In time, we recognise that our true nature is inherently peaceful, inherently fulfilled, before it is qualified or coloured by experience. If one is in touch with one’s true nature, one feels its innate peace and joy, and this brings about a reduction in suffering.
This clip is take from one of Rupert's retreats at Mercy Center, CA, 24 - 31 October, 2021.

is it just me or is the Tantric and Vedantic approach to dealing with emotions just different sides of the same coin? Both have you first become aware of the emotion of course, and then Tantric has you fully embrace it/feel it (without identifying with it) which shifts you into a state of nonresistance and allows it to transmute into peace. While with Vedantic, you notice the emotion and then turn your attention towards the aware presence that you are without resisting or identifying with the emotion.
So it seems both cause you to increase your awareness and shift into nonresistance, however one has you focus your attention on the emotion and one has you focus on the awareness itself. But in practice this is essentially the same. Because whether you focus on the emotion, or the awareness in which it resides, you're still in a nonresistant, aware state which basically floods the emotion with love/acceptance, preventing it from grabbing hold of your consciousness in any way and allowing it to transmute into peace/consciousness.
As long as you're in that nonresistant, aware state, the emotion's power supply is cut off and will eventually transmute into peace whether you're intentionally focusing on it or not. So It's really just whether you prefer to emphasize your attention being on the emotion or the presence in which it sits.

Yes, very funny and there's actually a cat that moved in next to my appartement's door 😂. I'm kind of a similar situation, currently working through relatively easy emotions, the some what difficult ones, and the monstrous ones that are related to early trauma they always show up in the presence of a trigger.
You can work through them by letting go of the resistance. Meaning just observe the thoughts, the emotions and/or sounds and put your attention on the observer. I know that this can be tricky at first to get and I probably not doing a good job of explaining it, but if you're really committed to this, I highly recommend Rupert's book "The Art of Peace and Happiness" it really sealed self-inquiry practice for me and awakening happened. I hope it can do the same for you. Namaste 🙏

Resistance is the produce of finite identification.
You resist personal offense, because you identify as a person
You resist burglary, because you identify with your family
You resist invasion, because you identify with a nation
You resist climate change, because you identify with humanity and a materialist-monist globe model that's seasoned with misinformation and hidden agendas.
If "you" are none of these things, there's nothing to resist. Resistance is inherently tied with misidentification.
Identifying with these temporal and finite forms is like identifying with sensations in the body.
"Oh no I hate the feeling of hunger, I'll never allow myself to be hunger again"
"Ohh damn I want this orgasm to never end; if it ends, I'll die too"
It's just Gods system of bodies, in which it experiences all of this as it's own freaky activity and your personal perspective is like one of the forementioned sensation-experiences within it. You (finite human mind) arose and soon will be gone and forgotten, just like a hunger or an orgasm. Why resist that which is inevitable and dictated by a system hierarchically above you? Just transcend the hierarchy, be the system itself, not some limited part of it and thus you don't face the consequences of these temporal desires and resistances, or in our case, these mortal individualities.
There is nothing to resist, because there is nothing opposite to you. All of this IS YOU.
ps. on a sidenote a neat magic trick and a shortcut to deal with resistance is to masturbate and climax to the object of resistance. You resist holocaust? Get that lube ready....

Hi Ben, if you are reading this I would love to know how you transformed your fear. I have severe phobia for animals too, I suffer and have tried the most. From Rupert to Hypnosis to Psychotherapy - with some results yes, but still no transformation.

    • @benxchen
      @benxchen Před 2 lety +3

Hi Gaëlle, sorry for the delayed reply. I just saw this video of my conversation with Rupert and read your comments recently. I tried numerous ways to deal with my phobia to this animal. In my experience, it helps to be playful and light-hearted. For example, in this car that's parked near where I live, there's a plastic toy version of this animal on the dash board. I would steal a glance at it during my daily walks, and just be with the sensation of fear that arises in the body. Other times, I would hold the mental image of this animal side-by-side to the image of my beloved cat, and let the fear be held in the understanding that even though I like my cat much more, we all share our Being. When I felt especially bold one day, I would pull up an actual image of this animal on my phone, look at it and be with the sensations that arises in the body. You can be creative with your own approaches. But the key is not to do these things with the agenda of getting rid of the fear coz that would only enhance it. As Rupert says, the true test is to ask yourself - can I live with this emotion forever, and be able to genuinely answer yes. I still don't like this animal and would prefer not to encounter it in life. But the phobia has less effect on me now that my resistance has lessened. Hope this is helpful to you!

Tantra(Vijnana Bhairava) suggests two techniques to deal with difficult emotions-
1.To acknowledge the presence of a negative emotion and immediately shift mind away from it
2.To stare at the emotion and embrace it without paying attention to the mental commentary that suggests us to avoid it...
Problem with this approach is that, while it is effective,it barely stratches the surface of the problem!!!....
Besides Tantra suggests this method for emotions that we are utterly convinced to be counter-productive to us,like Lust,Greed,Fear,Gluttony,Sloth,Anger etc etc....
But doing that handicaps our inquiry,as most of the time we may not know why and how that problem arose!!!
Difficult emotions and the commentraries that follow them as well as our response to them reveal to us all the tricks of our minds, ...All the Delusions, weaknesses,Irrationalities can be expossed by investigating into this !!!.....

Rupert: I respectfully disagree with you. Vedantic approach does not drive a wedge between YOU and the EMOTION. I do believe that you are misrepresenting the position of Advaita Vedanta. How can that ONE INDIVISISBLE PRINCIPLE WITHOUT A SECOND ONE BESIDE IT, separate itself from EMOTION? It does not see anything as "OTHER". An "APPARENT ENTITY" claims to have experienced "EMOTION" and calls itself a "Sufferer". However , Vedanta establishes on firm ground, that "YOU ARE NOT THE SUFFERER, EMOTION OR NO EMOTION"
