Do Tighter Choke Tubes Increase Recoil? TESTED

- Do tight choke tubes cause more felt recoil than open choke tubes? I test a cylinder choke against a super tight turkey choke with a recoil sensor to see if there is a difference. The tighter choke did indeed produce a little tiny bit more measurable recoil which was possibly noticeable to the shooter. This means very little for hunters, as you would not realistically hunt things where such a dramatic range of choke tubes made sense, nor the sporting clays or trap shooter for the same reason. Deviations from modified choke to full choke are likely too small to be measurable or noticeable. And only after shooting hundreds of shells might you be able to tell any difference.

In this video I used the Mantic 10x Elite training sensor along with a Carlsons cylinder sporting clays choke at 0.730 constriction and a Carlson's heavyweight TSS turkey choke at a 0.640 contriction. I think the felt recoil difference might be biased slightly due to the multiple shots inducing soreness on top of the slight difference.

Very interesting test! I imagine the person you spoke to was a very regular shotgun shooter and his shoulder perhaps quite sensitive to these differences where as many people who simply use shotgun through various hunting seasons with different clothing on may not feel something that subtle.
Oh yea, he is a national championship sporting clays shooter for 30 years.

Can you do the same thing and see velocities out of different choke tubes... I don't know if does means anything to us normal hunters, I think it should be some difference but nothing big. If you can try that with some cheaper shells..
The shotgun friendly chronographs that are reasonably priced just aren't precise enough to measure to that degree. The data wouldn't clean enough to know either way.
Yellow test with different real diameters you’ll see a huge difference on a 773 barrel versus a 730 barrel

I don't know that the shotgun friendly chronographs available at a reasonable price would be fine enough to detect the change, if it does. But I think it's possible.
There is a reason (a few) Proof Houses in Europe will not proof a fixed choke gun tighter than Modified fit High Performance Steel.
There is an increase in pressure when those hard, non compressible shot hits the choke. More pressure more recoil. More choke equals more pressure.

I've seen them. I used a mossberg 940 waterfowl with a 28 barrell.
Pressured gas, that leaves the barrel after projectile, generates significant amount of recoil.
Tighter the barrel choke. The smaller the barrel mouth and More jet thruster effect it has. Thats why i think.

well how fast am I. Cylinder and turkey always pair with different ammo, I never considered it since not many shoot buck and slug through tight constriction, same for shots through open constriction. I do however shot target load with turkey choke sometime. the tight beat zone makes the game harder. but I can't seem to feel difference in recoil vs IM choke.

Bro you are comparing ported tubes even with your previous test this is not a true comparison.
No, porting in chokes does nothing. It has no more impact on the results than the color of the choke.
If you're not using foot pounds of recoil measurement then this test is pointless.
