- In this video bladesmith Walter Sorrells shows how to make a Camp Knife. This type of knife, which falls into the somewhat vague category of camp knives and survival knives, is designed to be used in a wide variety of tasks under extreme or Spartan conditions where access to more specialized tools is limited.

I don't make knives, and I probably never will, but I love these videos so much. Thank you, Walter!!
Hi Mr. Sorrells. I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your videos! In particular the attention to detail and production value, and also that you present ideas for multiple ways of achieving certain steps. It has given me ideas and inspiration, so Thank you =)
i love O1 and D2 steels. they are solid as a rock. and they hold a great edge.
+Dave O A2 tool steel is very good
I like the idea of a full tang with the metal extending beyond the handle grip butt for hammering. For a survival knife I have a shrade F10 spearpoint.. a 1 piece hollow handle. I have some old knives that I am trying to get back to a mirror polish. No luck yet. Just scratched up trying different sandpaper grades, dremmil, files... seems it would and forever and a day to even get close to restoring a knife to new
Did i just see Walter Sorrels cutting the basic shape of a knife O: I didnt think i would live to see this day.
Coming from a bushcrafting background, 1095 & O1 are about the most trusted knife steels we use. Sure steels like A2, D2 & CPM 3V make appearances from time to time, but, generally speaking, we like our knives in 1095 or O1.
Gift to knife-heads all over the globe...I am envious of your shop.I have top shelf everything but Grinder tower.Noticed yours is $2500.00.I see the 2x82 was it on ebay for $900,had the big wheel as you advised..Dang Scary!!!!
Your awesome Mr.Sorrell
Mr. Sorrels, those Micarta scales are just awesome!!! Now I have to try and make some myself.
We used leaf springs from the junk yard for metal stock. Cheap
I really enjoy your channel! I subscribed after watching just one video. I'm a fan of really simple knife designs, and this one looks good, but also seems like a very useful knife. Great content!
As always an awesome and well thought out video.
I love your videos Walter.
Love this build!!! Awesome!
i would be honored if you sat back drinking a beer laughing at me your my idol Walter
Damn good job on both the knife and video.
Love your vidéos im in the process of making my own. Hopefully it will turn out ok lol
WALTER,love your videos, they dont leave you guessing.I have what I think is a legitimate question,Why cant a person glue on the scales then drill the holes for the pins....seems easier to me.....thank you.
world's most badass kitchen knife lol 😂
could you show us a build guide for that scribe? if its not too much trouble. thanks for the videos, liked seeing you on forged in fire too.
Walter sorrells what kind of steel comes from a lawnmower blade and a shovel.i have made knifes from both of them . And they get very sharp from both of them.great video as allways .
Hey Walter, or anyone else that might have an idea on this,
Say if I were to use a knife for batoning and such, and the size of the handle would not be an issue, would it be a better idea not to cut the tang? I figure it would be more durable if you have the entire width of the metal instead of a strip.
Thank you!
Does anyone know what the “little scoring gizmo” is? It’s what he used to mark the cutting edge so that he could keep his grinds even. I have been wanting to give this a try, but thinking I’m gonna get my grinds all lopsided, and not knowing a way to help with that, has been a stumbling block. I’m not one of those people who “has a good eye,” LOL.....so need all the help I can get!
The knife is awesome. It looks like a sushi knife with an attitude. I’d use a knife like that all the time. Very cool. 👍
Abalone Shell scales would like nice I think.
I don't recommend 1095 for a camp knife. It's high carbon and has a bad rust resistance. Camping it's going to be in the worst environments for rust. If it has a coating then it's a good choice it is decently tough.
Another great video sir. My question involves grinding toward the tip of the blade. This camp knife has what I would call a saber grind and, as you are approaching the end of the blade do you pull the handle end of the blade away from the platen or keep going straight till you get to the tip? Thanks for sharing all your skill and experience with those of us new to the art of kniifemaking.
I noticed that you tend to favor a free hand approach when grinding bevels. I've had trouble doing this myself -particularly hitting the same angle with each pass.
In this video it looks like you are using the thumb on your left hand as a depth stop by dragging it down the rest as you pull the blade across the belt (similar to how you traced your rough bevel). Is this the trick, or am I seeing things?
Brandon Libby That is what I was doing. But I actually grind only very rarely using the rest. Grinding is a skill that takes practice. It's easier on a rest, but it throws more crud and sparks all over you. Easier still using a jig. There's no right way to do it. I taught myself to do it without a rest or a jig, and so that's how I like doing it best.
sweet
Walter, if I may ask you this question, is it true that you once were a succesfull writer? I decided to google you to maybe get some information about you and your knives, and I saw that you have writen 25 novels. Do you still write books/novels, or do you now only make knives?
Lennard Willemars wow! I never would have known that! Walter must never sleep
apparently it is the same man. Didn't see that coming.
Just a thought. Is normalised steel less prone to warping than non-normalised?
Hi walter, im looking to make a knife similar to this and the tanto, one for everyday hard use. I have so mystery steel which ill make it out of with simple power tools. Can you make a knife like my description with only: a belt SANDER, drill, angle grinder and files. Thanks!
I have a question for you, if you don't mind, Mr. Sorrell. Are you a boxer or a wrestler?
hello walter, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. you mentioned the tempering process of heating it in an oven twice. in between the two trips to the oven how long should you wait? just until its room temp or does it need more time away from heat in order to temper correctly? thanks in advance!
Don't quote me, but I believe just back to room temperature is perfectly fine. He mentioned in another video I think.
The best camp knife is just two of them.
Hey Walter, love your videos. I am just learning how to use my 2x72 grinder and I was wondering if you could tell us what speeds you grind at for certain applications? Mine is a fixed 1800 fpm, and I've blown through a couple different brands and types of 80 grit belts just to put a bevel on a 9 inch blade, 2 inches wide, and it took like 2 hours. Any tips of what I might be doing wrong? Am I pressing too hard and wrecking the belt too fast? I have 36 and 60 grits on the way to see if that helps. You mentioned in one of your videos that you used your grinder for awhile before buying a VFD. So I'm hoping you have some tips on how you made it work well for you before buying the upgrade. Also there is an ebay buy it now for 3M AO belts, 50 packs of 60 and 80 grit for $60 shipped. I bought a few, just a heads up if you wanted to grab some name brand AO bets for dirt cheap. Thanks!
I've seen you use your scoring tool to mark the midline for your bevels several times, Is this something that you picked up, or did you machine it yourself? If you built it, do you have plans to share? I'm currently using calipers and scraping sharpie marker off to make my center line. It works, but I'd love to have a tool similar to yours.
+THANX4PLAYIN2DAY I made it myself.. Pretty simple to make actually. Just some simple drilling and tapping.
Honestly I think high carbon steel isn't good for a camp knife because of the damp locations a camp knife will go through. High carbon steel rusts to much. I feel like a stainless steel like M4 would make much more sense.
Walter i only have a bench, sander and a hand file what knife tutorials of yours will work for me?
Watch his machete video it's all done with hand tools
Maybe I am asking a dumb question. But I have seen all your videos now and several knife making videos from other knife makers. Is it possible to take the two pieces of wood, glue them on with epoxy and then drilling the holes through all three layers? So far I have seen no one doing this.. Hoping to get a good answer! Thanks a lot from Denmark!
+Amstrup77 If the steel in the tang is hardened, you can't drill it (at least not without a carbide bit).
Ah sure that makes total sense! You mean like Tungsten carbide bits? Thanks for the answer :)

Hey great video! I'm trying to make a similar knife. I'm working on how to build a forge/heat treating forge. Can I quench my blade in USED BLACK motor oil? And what material should a quench tank be made out of?
Thanks!!
Will it snap like a twig when chopping bones?.this is only the second time I watched you make a knife, the first wasn't very successful from what I saw..
Sorry if someone else asked this but are you worried about heat while grinding or is this only a problem with poor quality metal?
+john smith When you're grinding prior to heat treating, it's not much of an issue, but after heat treating, yeah, you have to be very careful and go much slower.
Hey Walter I want to know when you designing a knife how do you decide on the steel thickness your going to use?
Walter, do you use a medium viscosity oil for 1095 or a fast quench media? I have heard mixed opinions. I use a medium and I have had guys tell me that I should be using a fast quench like Parks 50 or something similar for 1095. Thanks again for the vids.
He generally uses peanut oil.
Do you do voice work on commercials and stuff? Seems like you might have what it takes.
just me,but shouldn`t the holes for the rivets be somewhat proportional?
those sparks landing on your hand while using the belt sander, does it burn/hurt?
+Chuy Briseno Not really. If you stuck your hand right underneath the shower of sparks it would burn the hell out of you, but when you're holding the steel only a few sparks hit you and they don't generate much heat. The main concern with belt grinders is grinding a nice big hole in your hand. Which happens now and then!
+Walter Sorrells ouch 😬😬😬
A real man can withstand the pain.
Yea yesterday I hit my finger on a spinning benchgrinder wheel and hit my finger I pulled a Taylor swift and snaked it off
We're u get ur scoring gizmo I'm in need of one asap lol it would he'll me out alot
where do you get your metal?
What are all of the dimensions of the stock you used to make this?
how much does a belt grinder cost and were do you get your metal for blades
+patrick hartwell How much do you want to pay? How much can you afford? A hobby rated one is under $100, an industrial one $600+ You could start with a hand held one like carpenters use - and you can race them as well.
Walter how do you make that thing to get the even point for the blade
What Rockwell would 1095 be tempered at that temperature?
Fantastic video! But I strongly recommend that you can remove your grinder’s noise in your video. Just a little suggestion : )
Hey Walter what kind of tool is the one you used to split the edge of the blade in half. You mentioned its a scoring gizmo, but im not sure which one to get.
+George Khabbaz I guess you'd call it a center marking scribe. You can buy variants of this basic idea from many knifemaking supply places.
+George Khabbaz also, you can use a drill bit the same thickness as the steel. the center of the bit will be the center of your steel
+Walter Sorrells +Heretic_iv Alright thanks for the tips guys really appreciate it!
np. keep it simple, remember, its art not science.......till all the science kicks in...damn metallurgy.lol
how many belts do you go through per knife?
how do you know if you can harden it?
Hi Again I was inspired ny this video where should I look for the 1095 steel? I am looking at Grainger and Im seeing all kinds of specs for there tool steel and the regular is 1020 and lower. Any suggestions
Where do you get your steel
Walter Sorrells DRO = Digital Readout? For exact measurements?
+Danan Coleman Yes.
But for real: I've seen you use that "scoring gizmo" on a ton of videos, and I cannot for the life of me find one for sale. I've found similar ones, but never one with that solid straight block to run down the knife side. Any help on where to get one?
he made it himself
get a machinist to make one for ya if you really want it. def helps
James Cutler
usa knife maker sells them and tru grit
"knife scribe" on usa knifemaker
Just found them, thanks guys! :)
How big should the bevels be or is it up the design
+Aaron Gill Yep, it's up to you!

were do i find 1095 i have looked everywear and can not find it?????

Why should you cut it and not grind it?
Vladimir Savov Cutting is faster than grinding...assuming that you remove a reasonably large amount of material when you're cutting.
Aha, I see. I don't know the materials and thought it has something to do with the hardness and the structure
+Walter Sorrells ¿ is it possible to use mild steel ?
why not A2?
what is the scoring gizmo. called who makes it. thanks
He made it himself.
Is 304L stainless steel good for knife making?
+Alvin Pope The 300 series steels are more intended for things like pans, pipes,sinks...that sort of thing.
+Walter Sorrells I'm a welder, and I'm very interested in knife making. I'm just getting started. Before I make my first knife I wanna know which is a good stainless, and a strong carbon steel. Where is a good resource that I can use to increase my knowledge of different types of steels?
One place to start would be my video about steel for knifemakers...
+Walter Sorrells Yes sir I watched it, and it was very informative. Thank you for everything you do. Your work is magnificent! You make it look easy!
Is there any one ho Can share the dimension on the knife ind mm og cm?
I cant be the only one who thinks this guy sounds like rick grimmes.
”Never grind if you dont have to” *proceeds with anglegrinder*
I have a much better workshop than you but i can't build so nice knives as you can
Thought I was going to see some forging. meh..
this guys voice is so Agrivating
When I watch other people use a belt grinder, they have protective gear oozing out of their pores. When I watch you use a belt grinder, your basically washing your bare hands in sparks.... Do you not feel pain? Or is everyone else just being silly?
Stephen Bandstra I use eye protection and a respirator religiously, but I don't like grinding with gloves. They get wet and then the water transmits heat to your skin anyway. Plus you don't have as much feel for what the knife is doing. Sometimes I'll tape my fingers, depending on what I'm doing. Another general note I'd make is that whatever you see me doing in my videos, you have to remember that I'm also directing a video. Sometimes that takes precedence over how I'd normally do something in the shop. Very hard to diddle around with a camera while wearing heavy gloves, welding gear, face shields, etc. etc.
***** If your blade gets that hot then you are doing something wrong and it can effect the finished product.
It's worth adding that gloves and belt grinders dont like each other.
Getting a losely fitting glove stuck between the belts and the wheels is very easy, and when that happens, broken fingers is not that uncommon.
In general, using gloves with power tools is asking for trouble.
I'd rather cut my self on a bur or a sharp edge on the steel, than having a drill bit or a bench grinder take a hold of my glove and break or tear something off my body.
I really enjoy your work Walter, just lose a little with the terminology. Wtf is a "prepper" or, indeed a "bug-out bag"? Two nations, separated by a common language, I guess.
A prepper is a person who is prepared for a catastrophic situation, stockedup with food, weapons, water, and anything else you may need to survive earthquakes, financial collapse etc. stuck in your house. A bug out bag is a bag that you have ready for 3-5 days of having to leave your home in a bad situation usually stocked with clothing weapons money food etc. some prepper also carry a bug out bag in their vehicle. Hope this helps you understand.
why would you skin a cat

+Rachel_of_creation yea i saw it, but was totaly out of context
What are all of the dimensions of the stock you used to make this?
