- You won't believe how easy this piece of wood art was to build. All you need is two 2 x 6s a 24 x 24 project panel from Home Depot, and some construction adhesive.
So how much style can you squeeze into one piece of wall decor and just a couple of 2x6s? #LetsDothis
Thanks to all of you awesome makers out there for inviting me to this years #WoodARTChallenge, I had a blast build this.

Nicely done
Nice
Thanks
I love working with pine wood because it has beautiful lines and grains. This turned out nice

Thanks!
Very well done. So too is the opening video on your website. Your woodworking philosophy and tips are spot on. Thanks for posting.
This is incredible.
I dig it! Cool design, and very doable. Nice job, Rick!
Thanks Jonny, not everything I build has to be hand cut dovetails in jesus wood. That gives my an idea for my next project 😜
Love the drawn out arrow.
You can follow my love affair with that arrow back to my wooden PC build video, he is my arrow, and I love him, and he loves me :)
Sooooo cool 👍
Thanks!
I love this piece. Great job.
At first I thought the pieces were placed randomly, until you put it on the wall. I really like the pattern, very nice!
Thanks! Ya check out the article on my website and you’ll see the render that might make it make a little more sense. Glad you like it, I don’t think random would play in this challenge with these talented folks.
Awesome safety tips, Rick! My first try with a table saw (just a week or two ago) resulted in injury, so it's important to go over those tips for beginners for sure. Great project!
Thanks so much Sarah. I always have to remind myself to be super conscious of safety with the camera running and so many things going on in the shop while I work. Any spinning blade tool needs all of your intention when you're using it.
Nice, really like the colour; makes a good acoustic diffuser as well.
Thanks! It would be even better if you used a quadratic pattern for the depth of the pieces but it will diffuse a few frequencies pretty well. I could figure them out, but I don't feel like doing math...
That’s so simple but so cool!
Great job!!!
That is always the challenge, simple and cool.
This piece is super cool! Love the geometric design, the depth, the scale. I wish it was bigger. :) Makes me want to touch it. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, this is my second time with this design, I tried to distill it down to the easiest way you can possible build this.
I dig it, Rick! It turned out really sharp looking!
Thanks Bruce, I did actually cut myself while sanding it...so it kind of is sharp...
Super easy, super accessible!
Super AWESOME! thanks!
Sweet project! Loved the editing improvements you did in this one, great job, Rick.
Thanks man, I really focused a lot of sound design and a more consistent color grade. It is also nice with the new camera that I can rely on auto focus to accomplish a few things I otherwise couldn't have ever done.
Came out really nice, i'm enjoying the videos in this challenge
Me too, everyone put a whole lot into this challenge, I am super happy with the results!
Looks awesome! Love the floating arrow to your other shop projects! So smart!
I have an ongoing love affair with that little arrow, you will see more of him as time goes on. We first met last year building wooden PC case, he has since grown to do many other things...Thanks for watching. I loved your build too!
Cool wall art ,top job.
Cheers
Tim from Wood 4 Nothing
Thanks buddy!
Love it!!! I recently became disabled and I have tons of driftwood, scrap wood and I so want to learn how to do woodworking! Wish there was an actual class close 2 where I live! Tip of the mitt- west northern mi.
Like button smacked, comment dropped!!! Thanks for the shoutout and project turned out awesome 😀👍 Also, first.
Notification SQUAD! I loved your video, Katelyn you killed the VO and the Rescue rangers hyperlapse commentary was amazing! Awesome idea with the veneer, I really need a nap, this was a bit of a sprint to the finish.
BTW, you would've been first, but for some reason your comment was flagged? Are you guys secretly hackers?
Yes, secretly hackers. It's our side side business 🤓🤓
You do you :)
Simple and elegant - I like it. Nice job brother
Thanks brother, that is what I was going for.
Dang that looks pretty good
Thanks!
High Skill
I love how accessible you made this project! And it's such a neat pattern. Just smack it! ;)
Thanks! I am going to try to do more projects like this where anybody could try it and get great results. I am thinking about calling the series #LETSDOTHIS thoughts?
Sounds like a great idea!
This is that new hotness.
Um...I believe you mean "DAT new hotness" gosh, spell much?
Hey I really enjoyed the video I've been in a funk and really interested in going out to the garage and making Man glitter "sawdust" but this video made me perk up and think to myself hey that looks fun I should try that!! I enjoyed the music also thanks again
Thanks Dylan, really made my day. Thanks for the comment. Go out and make some sawdust sometimes picking off a few easy projects is a good way to build some momentum. PRO TIP: Every difficult project is just a bunch of easy projects strung together...
Wow... looks awesome @woodworklife
Thanks so much! It was a fun project.
wow! amazingggggg!
Thanks!
Wood.Work.LIFE. You’re absolutely welcome. Keep it up! Your creativity is inspiring
Very cool video bro. Nicely done.
Your intro was better :) I loved your project! This playlist is such a rabbit hole, everybody makes such cool things...
killer job on the video man! that edit was awesome!
Thanks brother, it was fun to just build something simple for once and be able to focus more on the video. The new camera certainly helps too. You are using premiere right? Have you tried any of the new features in 2018.1?
I have not tried any new feature. Im lucky that I can just string together a couple of clips. I dont know the first thing about all the features and tricks you can do with it.
Come with me grasshopper, I will show you the world...
i wanna make this my entire wall now
Do it!
Really cool piece Rick! 👍👊
Thanks Fred, your opinion is amongst the only one that matters :)
Wood.Work.LIFE. 😀
Great work, but the method of calculating the pieces is very important, your new friend from Egypt
Hi, you can use painters tape doubled up on both sides of the blade if you dont have a zero clearance insert available. Actually just used that method on mine for the small rips that were getting caught between the blade. Very dangerous otherwise. Try it and let me know if it works for you. Take care & thanks for sharing.
Good point, I got a little lazy with that one. Never good to be lazy with safety.
Use wide blue tape for an emergency zero clearance insert. Just apply the tape over the existing insert opening in one long strip, then raise the blade to the height you need for the cuts you are making.
Great idea
Looks good! Do you think you could apply the Shou-sugi-ban finishing technique to this? Possibly for an outdoor patio piece.
oh hell ya, but Shou Sugi Ban really takes best to White Oak though, so I would build it out of White Oak if I were going to do that. The dark color might take away some from the shadow lines though so YMMV.
Good point! Actually one of those flowing wood carvings in white oak with Shou Sugi Ban might look interesting. Maybe even topographical.
That would be cool!
Nice one Rick! I'm going to have to try a 3D wood "tile" project at some point here!
It was so easy! This is the second time I have done this design, I liked the long grain better than the end grain from last time. You could probably make one on a CNC in 3 hours, but so much sawdust to cleanup...
Please list all supplies used in your projects in the description. I'm new to wood working and it would help a lot!
Even stains, length of nails or screws ect. for future videos.
Will do!
Can u use a polyurethane on this 2 use in a bathroom?
Why did you use construction adhesive instead of wood glue? Awesome art btw, love it!
because construction adhesive doesn't REQUIRE clamping. It also has tack when it is wet so the pieces don't shift around as much.
Would have liked a nude stain, or just clear coat, to let the natural shape of the wood create its own shadows and contrast rather than try to force something with walnut stain.. but.. still looks neat.
Noice
I am glad you spelled that correctly, also FIRST!!!
0:35 a lynx? i see no links for a lynx. :(
Well done. 1 question though: why not just use wood glue?
likely due to drying time and clamping requirements, but i'm interested if it's another reason.
Good question, I answered it in the blog post but it didn't make it into the voice over. I used loctite power grab so that I didn't have to clamp or nail anything as I went, you just press it in and it stays until it is dry.
Wood.Work.LIFE. That makes sense. Thanks!
Is it wrong to want to do a complete wall with this pattern 😍
Not at all, I already did :)
@@WoodWorkLIFE Might have to do the same when I start renovating my home office 😁 love tye simplicity of it and absolute gorgeous pattern 😁
Thanks. Ya, I dig it!
fantastic , would you be able to summarize the count and measurements for pieces please?
They are all 2x6 slices at .5" 1" 1.5" and 2" I don't remember how many there were.
@@WoodWorkLIFE Thanks, so all 6s not 3.5, 5.5,7.5 and 9.5. I misunderstand I think. Thanks again. Looks great, building one next weekend!
How did you figure out how many pieces of each size was needed?
Math :). Then assuming my math was wrong and cutting a bunch of extras, they make great firestarters
@@WoodWorkLIFE I figured that you used math :), but how did you calculate for the pieces? Did you lay out a pattern of what you wanted and then calculate from there?
dont do this kids...
AHAHA dont joke with me, im a 14 yr old with a workshop
only problem is that it's on the 2nd floor and it's only 10 by 12 ft, which makes everything waaaaay harder
...mayhaps share an image of the 'art' first to compel viewing the process...cheers,
Ya, my ugly mug doesn't do it :)
Nice piece and super simple.
However, aside from being made of wood isn't the #WoodARTChallenge supposed to be square?
There's a square behind there
Ha ha ha. Touche.
Nooooo, stop leaning over the table sawww.
I tried to smack the like button now my screen is cracked...
Delicately caress it...
I love the way it looks but that finish is to much for my taste
Well, that didn't pan out...such an unfortunate choice of stain.
Everybody's a critic. Honestly though, feel free to stain it a different color, or not stain it at all with a water based poly.
@@WoodWorkLIFE Yep. Such a cool design, and that's why your dark stain is killing me...you simply need to contact Elmo when it's time to stain. For a modest fee, I'll pick the correct finish. I am the arbiter of taste, an emperor of sorts. Keep up the great work.
Stain isn't a "finish".
It is when you’re done 🤪
Absolutely didn't like the finished product.
Nice
