    PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING:
    As I didn't think I put it eloquently enough as I was tired, I wanted to talk about the conure cages again.
    These cages are temporary set ups whilst we work on bonding either two or all of them together. When they are bonded, they will move into a huge flight cage together. If they do not bond, they will each get their own individual flight cage.
    If we were to house them in flight cages now, it would make it much harder to put them in together as there would not be a neutral and novel space which is necessary for reducing the chance of territorial issues.
    This video is a snapshot of our day and does not show the many hours that our conures (and cockatiels!) are out and about training, flying, cuddling and foraging. They are mainly in their cages for sleeping, eating and some independent play in the afternoon.
    The conures use the entire height of the cage, from foraging in the substrate at the bottom, to playing with toys on the middle and top levels. They are perfectly happy in this temporary set up and if I thought for one minute that they were stressed, we would change their set up immediately.
    I wanted to write this as I know that people on the internet make assumptions without the full picture, or write unnecessary comments for the sake of it. I get nasty comments regularly about my glasses and visual impairment, so I wanted to give everyone as much information about what's in the video before people jump to conclusions and pass judgments.
    Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed the video!

I know that birds all have individual personalities but Im just looking at general characteristics. I am looking for a calm bird, one that doesn't want to play every minute. Of course I would love a playful bird, but not one that is super hyper! I can handle the noise between both of these species. I am also wondering which species is more cuddly? I don't really care if the bird is cuddly, Im just curious :) Which bird is generally more well rounded but still has a lot of spunk? Thanks so much Sophie!!!

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Před 3 lety

      Thank you so much for watching! You're right, it really does depend on the individual! I wouldn't say either are particularly calm, though if I had to choose, I'd say cockatiels. Conures can be more playful and over-stimulated easily. If you mean cuddly up against you then conures, if you mean asking for scritches then cockatiels, though there are many in each species that don't like to be touched!

    Hi Sophie, (I am from Paris) you said covering the cage promote hormonal behavior, that's what I am trying to avoid because they are hormonals and particularly one who relieves on the curtains, but the cage is in my bedroom unfortunately I don't have enough place at home. And as you know we are in longest days in year so how can I get them asleep before sunset if I don't cover the cage while continuing to leave my room lit? I still can't find a compromise to find a balance with the birds at home 😔 thanks for your work (I am following on insta too)

      @BirdNerdSophie  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Zak! Thanks for watching and following! As a compromise, you could partially cover the cage so it isn't fully covered, close the curtains and use a small lamp in the evening instead of having the room light on!

      I had a set of budgies and I noticed a lot of ppl made smart comments about the amount of work I put into the care of “just 2 budgies” 🙄 we made the choice to bring them into our home so I believe it’s our responsibility to give them the best care but I will say you’ll get a routine faster than you think. I got a food processor (cheap a Walmart under 20 bucks) & I done one batch of all their nuts & put those in a ziplock then done all their veggies in another batch and each day I just scooped their food into their bowls at breakfast & sprinkled their nuts into the veggies. They also have Harrisons high potency pellets in their cage throughout the entire day with oats, flax seed & oats. Budgies normally need the high potency pellets due to the horrible seeds & breeding. Fruits get added couple times a week. Again once you get a routine it’ll only take ya 5 mins a day. Prepping maybe 20 mins a week.

      @@MeetMalli I’m sorry I just realized how crazy my comment read, I was half asleep 😂 I have an African grey also & my morning prep to get their food & water is 10 minutes. They all get chop (veggies) fruit a few times a week very little & nuts. Budgies will hate chop if they’ve never had it but the processor turns it into a mash almost so when they go to pick out their favorites the other stuff gets on their beaks & they eventually realize they like it. Mine came from a pet store unfortunately but their chop is now their favorite time of day. Seeds cut their lifespan by A LOT. It can all seem very overwhelming trust me I know, but you will get into your own rhythm & have it down packed. I was able to convert mine from seed to pellets in under a week. Best advice I can give you that I wish I had in the beginning is just make sure they have cuddlebone & stay away from all the “treats & supplements” from pet stores other than millet. If you don’t want breeding/hormone issues stay away from mirrors Hunts & any kind of nesting boxes. And obviously no nonstick cookware, candles, air fresheners or cleaning products. Even use in a separate room WILL kill them. I
      Just in case you didn’t know some of those things, if you did I apologize lol
