      Oh absolutely- it applies to all pet products as there’s so little regulation for them!

    I'd never buy treat sticks myself, but my 2 rescue budgies came with a few, I tossed them outside for the wild birds to destroy.
    So many bird products are sold to humans, not to birds. It is in the bird isle, that means my bird needs it! Bad mentality to have really.
    That top picture of pellets looks exactly like a cereal here called TRIX lol.
    The horror stories I've seen about those metal clips is disturbing. All it takes is a few seconds not watching them and bad things happen fast. Been using the plastic C rings myself, the birds don't seem to care that they even exist. They (my budgies) do enjoy using them as a sort of wonky perch, so I have some strung up as well.
    Such misinformation when it comes to grit, this is why I would never take any advice from a pet shop employee, it is their job to sell you products, as many as possible, it is your job to research what items you should get.
    Don't get why everything comes with bells, 8 birds, and only 1 bell gets knocked around, for maybe 5 seconds, once a week lol. I've removed a ton of bells from toys. Gave them to my mom, she seems more amused by them (turned them into Xmas decoration stuff lol )
    Found out Buddy likes harder woods, he chewed the hell out of this toy that came with the rescue budgies as well. The budgies oddly enough never touch that toy. They love softer woods more.
    Keep saying vitamins please, now say aluminum :D (sorry love British accents lol)
    I read male birds will ejaculate on mirrors, causing serious bacterial build up on them too >< (eww)
    Bird shampoos.... never heard of those, sounds like another product sold to humans not birds. That is only going to strip natural oils from feathers causing issues.
    Would love to see what you recommend for cages and carriers on your Amazon page by the way.

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Pƙed 3 lety +5

      Totally agree that everything is marketed for the human's benefit!
      I also think it depends on the pet shop employee - I once worked in a pet store but I would never recommend any of the awful dog food on sale!
      It is weird how everything comes with bells - no need and would make the toys cheaper if they stopped putting them on!
      That's cool that he likes harder woods - the boys will chew thin slabs of hard wood but they won't touch blocks!
      Lol, someone said on one David's videos that he has a thick accent and they couldn't understand him 😂
      Gross on the mirrors 😂
      Amazon is lacking in decent cages at the moment, and the only carrier I am happy with is quest pricey on there!

      @angsfeatheredfriends Pƙed 3 lety +6

      @@BirdNerdSophie That could be more true for smaller mom and pop pet shops, those giant corporation pet shops though are really aggressive on pushing off expensive things your pets don't even need.... I know there are some parrot specific pet stores down around Minneapolis, but that is a 2 and a half hour drive (eww). So I am stuck with petco / petsmart, which is close-ish.
      Ah, really a bummer UK Amazon doesn't carry everything US Amazon does (to be honest US amazon is overwhelming at times, but so many products are TERRIBLE!). I want to get a carrier, but just go dizzy when I look. To many shapes, sizes, and prices.
      Aren't we allies or something?! Talk to your Queen, I will talk with which ever old dude is president. We must work on this! Proper Parrot supplies for everyone!

    I would also avoid out of cage hanging bird baths that hang on the cage itself. It looks like a bath extension to the cage. Many years ago, when I was a new and young bird owner, I got one for my birds. The plastic hooks broke while I was out of the house and one of my birds escaped and died because of it. I would rather not say exactly how she died because it was quite graphic but holding a screeching bleeding bird in your arms isn't exactly a good experience. It's not worth it. If you get one, make sure it is a very high quality product *not* made of plastic.

    This was such an informative video, thank you :) I really dislike the bells on most bird toys. I have an African Grey and when he got his first toy, he was playing with it and all of a sudden I heard "Thunk" on the cage floor. I saw it was the clacker so I took it out of the cage and when we buy toys now, I always remove the clacker before putting it in the cage.
    He likes the bell part because he holds onto it while he tries to destroy the top part of the toy. I have quite a selection of clackers, I have no idea what to do with them haha.

  • @pixxa37
    @pixxa37 Pƙed rokem +1

    One of my rescues came to us because his beloved human had died. He's a gentle boy, and didn't scream or behave badly with the other boys, but he spent more than a week sitting in front of his mirror, in a corner of his own cage. He wouldn't move from that place, ate and drank very little, and didn't interact with me nor with the other guys. He seemed to get comfort from that mirror and just broke my heart. I know it is irrational, but since then I always leave one little mirror in every cage, where they can see their own face. Probably it is more for my own reassurance, and they ignore it completely...

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Pƙed rokem

      So there's been a number of studies that show that parrots don't 'self recognise' in the mirror - they see it as another bird and can get super frustrated when they can't access the reflection! If they ignore it anyway then it's perfectly find to take out :)

    I'm on a few budgie groups on Facebook. Everyone swears by nutrabol. The two separate times I gave it to my birds it made sweetpea lose 4 feathers each time. He's been slowly going bald for 17 months now so it was only ever the odd feather we found,until giving him the nutrabol and we'd find a few on the bottom of his cage. My vet also said it was safe to give nutrabol and pellets at the same time ( which I didn't as it states on the back not to give extra supplements)

    • @BirdNerdSophie

      Have you ever had any bloodwork done for Sweetpea?
      The problem with Nutrabol is its a very high potency calcium supplement, but if birds are getting enough calcium from pellets and/or vegetables, then adding extra calcium on top is going to cause problems!

    Ingredients:
    Whole grains - soybean, wheat and maize. Vitamins: A, B6, B12, C, D3 and E.
    Minerals: calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, sodium & zinc.
    Fruity flavours: apple, blueberry & raspberry.

    The one thing on this list that did surprise me were the multivitamin supplements, but it makes sense! I'm still trying to convert my boy from seeds to pellets and fresh veg, and actually swapped out his seeds for the nutriberries ones in the meantime as I saw they had vitamin supplements in and was worried he wasnt getting enough (at this stage he's eating very little of the pellets and will only sometimes nibble a tiny bit on a green bean/piece of apple/lettuce.) I don't have any plans to continue feeding the nutriberries once he's converted - but would like to know your thoughts on if this is okay for now?

    Hello Sophie & Flock,
    I want to thank- you for advising against bird shampoo and feather shines, bubbles ect., because I don't think that I have heard anyone else state that the feathers are no longer growing and the chemical ingredients are dangerous, unhealthy and unnecessary for the birds feathers.
    I know that I sometimes get concerned about the condition of birds tail feathers. She seems to drag them through her food and sometimes her droppings. So, about the time she's not looking so pretty, she starts to molt and the old tail feathers are replaced.

      @@BirdNerdSophie We saw no danger in those carabines because they close very strong. Sometimes too strong even for me.
      But I'm not sure with the keyrings, Chuck loves to play with them. The bells are not their favorites, so the birds probably won't miss them. The last tent will be removed too. Mo has learned to fly in the cage,so she don't need it as a jump base any more. Sand is unsure, they like to play with it, or have a walk in it, it's very rare that they eat it

    Are the Higgins pellets ok? The small parakeet blend ingredients look good don’t they? Also the Higgins parakeet seed mix as all kids of stuff aside from seeds. Can you look at those and see if that’s good for a cockatiel?

    • @BirdNerdSophie

      Hey! Do you mean the Higgins InTune pellets? If so, they are based on corn, wheat and soy and also contain sugar so I personally wouldn't recommend them. The parakeet seed mix has some interesting ingredients but it's mostly made up of millet ad also contains sugar so it wouldn't be one that I recommend either!
