- By popular demand, my personal "Alternate track listing" for The Wall by Pink Floyd, a brilliant but troubled production with band morale at an all time low which resulted in Roger Waters firing Richard Wright. This playlist reinstates him as a featured player, singer and songwriter using songs from his solo album Wet Dream to create a more collaborative feel a la Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here. Tracks are also included from David Gilmour's self-titled 1978 album as well as tracks from their subsequent live tour off of Is There Anybody Out There.

Following a series of successful progressive rock albums (Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals) Pink Floyd (Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright) set out to create their most ambitious project yet. Inspired by a gig in Montreal where Roger spat on a fan, he sought to create a wall around the audience which producer Bob Ezrin suggested he explore as a stage show. Roger's wall was a metaphor for isolation and mental illness (also using Syd Barrett as inspiration). But tensions between the band eventually lead to Roger firing Rick (who would stay on as a salaried musician). Roger and David had intense arguments over direction of the piece. David had three co-composition credits with Roger, Young Lust, Run Like the Hell, and the iconic Comfortably Numb. Outside of a co-composition credit to Bob Ezrin, Roger wrote The Wall himself, Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 becoming a number 1 hit single while fan favorites In the Flesh and Hey You continue to be played today. Many fans, myself included, feel there is a collaborative element missing on this album that was heard on their previous records. Their chemistry would return on the live show, once released as Is There Anybody Out There. As an experiment, I attempted editing a version of the album using songs from Rick Wright's 1978 Wet Dream album as well as David Gilmour's self titled solo album. This is the product I came up with.
UPDATE: Many wisely commented about adding the Echoes compilation version of Comfortably Numb to the playlist to include that interlude that precedes it. I have adjusted the playlist accordingly. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

The Tide is Turning is such a good song for a replacement for outside the wall and Roger even played at his live show in Berlin.

Really solid version of the album. I used to make "new" versions of the album for years. Then, when "Is There Anybody Out There - The Wall Live" was released, that just became my go-to version of the album. The biggest thing for me is that the album sounds (at least to me) like what it would've sounded like if Rick REALLY played on the record.
Same thing. I also listen to Animals Live in Oakland or Boston as Rick got to play a synth solo on Pigs giving David a break and ending with the slow jam of David and Rick trading solos like in Echoes before going fast ending.
Glad that "Is There Anybody Out There?" is getting some love, they're on fire on that record. I did the same thing about a year or two ago, but instead of using their solo albums I used some of the band/Richard Wright demos from Under Construction, the live record, and Pink Floyd's version of Sexual Revolution. I feel that the best version of The Wall is the one we never really got because of Roger's ego trip.
Interesting video. Not sure I'd have used the alternate songs from the solo albums, but I've always found it hard to decide which version of The Wall I prefer, both have their strong points, and Rick's playing on the live version is excellent, it's like was trying to prove a point. One thing I would change from this list though is Mother. I'd have definintely used the live version. It's a lot more emotonal, and David's extended solo is superb
This is a great alternate playlist. I actually made my own called "The Higher Wall, which includes songs from The Final cut and some of the solo work, great video!

I enjoyed the playlist and the inclusion of the songs from Dave & Richard's solo albums. I very much like 'Vera' and 'Bring the boys back home' but i agree that they do "kill the momentum" and it does feel like 'Comfortably Numb' saves the day! Great work JT.
I am hopeful that you give The Final Cut some gold fish!!! I feel it's always criminally under-appreciated in the discography of Floyd...

FACT!
The "Isn't This Where We Came In" loop was removed from the 8 Track Cartridge version of the album so it begins with the opening note of Flesh? then Another Brick 2 is shortened as is the ending of Another Brick 3 and Goodbye Cruel World. Hey You begins with the first verse on Program 2 then Program 3 fades back in on David's second verse. Comfortably Numb fades out midway through the guitar solo at the end so no high notes from David. Outside the Wall has no "Isn't this where?" and ends with "Mad Buggers Wall:. My own version ends with the Reprise It's Never Too Late with Rick playing an Oberheim synthesizer solo recorded from one of the band demos on The Wall Box Set LONG OUT OF PRINT!
BTW, Wet Dream was re-released last year remixed by Jethro Tull remixing genius Steven Wilson. He also remixed the 1971-74 Yes output, Rush's A Farewell to Kings for 2017 5.1 mix, KISS' Destroyer for 5.1 and The Who's Who's Next for 5.1 He should have remixed Animals and would have not removed anything but blend in things, Guthrie butchered Animals like he did Amused to Death. He was also responsible for the altered The Final Cut which has been canon since 2004. If Roger has his way now it will be Nigel Godrich mixing his projects (Nigel is Roger's new James Guthrie).

About to include Waves to my version of The Wall, I never made the connection but I'm really sold on it thanks to the things you said, Vera and Bring the Boys Back Home ain't going anywhere tho, i really like those songs, the final part of my album is entirely composed with mixes between live versions and album versions since they bring a lot to the experience like you also mentioned, overall your version of the album is great, it feels less like it's The Roger Waters Band and more like Pink Floyd, thanks for sharing dude
I think the reason why it lacks the collaborative touch is because it was meant to be a solo project that the band was brought onto, top notch video. only part I wanted to add.
One of the big changes i would make is having the last song be Outside The Wall/It’s Never too late which is a demo track that was sadly left off the album
I love this! Using Audacity, I created my own version of Wish You Were Here by blending both halves of Shine On You Crazy Diamond together for side 1, just to hear what the complete song would sound like. Then I grafted Welcome to the Machine onto the end of side 2, with WYWH fading into WTTM. It turned out really well and is fun to listen to, and kind of gives the album a fresh approach.

I will say it makes me wish I had listened to Rick Wright's Wet Dream. Roger Waters wasn't a person who would say to Rick Wright "Look, I understand you're going through some tough times and I wish I could help you. I want you on this album but you've got to get counseling for your personal problems. Then give us everything you can!" In a perfect world, he would've told David Gilmour "I understand you want more say on the songwriting. Show me what you've got and we'll talk!"
I read a review of The Wall decades ago, and the reviewer made a great observation - "The Wall as a double album is OK, but as a single album it would have been a great album. So with that idea I combined a few songs into one, and eliminated a few of the extraneous ones. Though this listing would still have been a double vinyl album, it would have worked on a single disc in the CD age, and (somewhat) makes the concept more concise.

Hearing you talk about Marooned reminded me that we're gunna talk about The Division Bell at some point, and I'm worried it's gunna be a negative review like so many others. I really like Division Bell. It's a beautiful record and, I know this next bit is gunna get me crucified but I think the solo at the end of High Hopes is the best solo on any Pink Floyd song.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by my review...
P.S. A song wrote called Shake it Off (not the Taylor Swift song) has a slide solo that was directly inspired by High Hopes.

The live version of the album with the four faces on it ("Is there anybody out there") is way better than the studio album.
Interesting video. I'm intrigued by the idea of an alternate version of The Wall, though I do like The Wall too much to do this but it's a fun idea.
All this talk about their solo albums, you should totally do reviews of their solo albums! It sounds like you enjoyed Wet Dream more than me but I still enjoy some of the songs off that album, or Dave's first album in my opinion every song is great! It would be cool to see your takes on the Floyd solo albums!
Te lack of What Shall We Do Now? is why I don't listen to the studio version of The Wall anymore. If I want to listen to The Wall I listen to Is There Anybody Out There?
This is a very Good playlist J.T I would have added Have a Cigar or Welcome to the Machine from Wish you were here as there is no part where Pink Becomes a rock star. Plus, Have a Cigar would keep the surrogate band consept with the whole which ones Pink? Thing As well to name dropping the Main Character
Well the idea is consisiting of songs that came out around the same time with Wish you Were Here already being an established album.
I once created a fantasy "amateur operatic" version of The Wall which had the studio version of "Empty Spaces" segue straight into the vocal of "Have A Cigar", to introduce the idea of Pink as the rising rock star.
I always thought the beginning verses of The Post War Dream from The Final Cut would be a great opening for The Wall before In the flesh. The lyrics are Sarcastic, but seems like thinking from the mind of a child.
For me the Live version is the best to lesson to mostly. Tracks like Run like Hell are amazing compared to the studio version. Another brick in the wall pt 2 needs that studio touch. The singing is just off to me.
It’s always a shame that What Shall we do now was removed off the album.
I tried to make my own playlist of a Modern Floyd Album from Gilmore’s Rattle that Lock, Water’s Is The Life We Really Want, and Floyd’s Endless River. That could be an interesting challenge.
Mel Collins is easily my favorite saxophonist. He's fantastic.

David recycled the guitar solo (about a minute in) on “Raise My Rent” 16 years later on “What Do You Want From Me,” on ‘The Division Bell.’

I love this concept. I once loved the Wall, then I LOVED Pink Floyd so it waned in my desire to play. Love the more collaborative feel you went with your list. I would have definitely included There's No Way Out of Here to start side 4 though
There's No Way Out of Here wasn't actually written by David so I decided to go with ones he actually penned. It is a great track though.

Oh. I made my own Wall too. Basically, I mixed together the music from the film, the Live concert, one symphonic orchestral version of In The Flesh with the Bob Geldof's voice, the demo track for the end of disc 1, the original LP naturally and a couple of tracks from the Berlin concert with guest stars, namely Goodby Blue Skies and Comfortably Numb with Van Morrison and CSN. Also, I reversed the secret message in Empty Spaces. For a long time, I tried to fit this on one 80 minute Compact Disc, but I eventually renounced. I discarded the Final Cut from the Pink Floyd discography and recreated A Collection Of Great Dance Songs with the following :
1) When The Tigers Broke Free
2) Against The Odds
3) Siam
4) So Far Away - Live
5) Voices
6) Opal
7) Not Now John
8) Mumbo Jumbo
I really like your concept though. Way more instrumental. Mine is very much focused on the Opera. I relied on the film soundtrack wherever I could, without forgetting the live performance because this is the story of a concert not happening. The Wall is a project bigger than the band itself, if you compare it to the Man and the Journey 10 years prior.
Against The Odds, beautiful song, came from a very personnal place and I don't think it would fit the ironic tone of Pink's cartoonish melodrama. Is it me or is Pink mentionned on Wet Dream ?
Don't get me wrong, I love the saxophone, but those feel-good warm notes break the tension and despair. You hear that demolished A chord in Hey You, Another Brick and Worms. It's a feel-bad opera, dealing with serious social despair (the drugs, Brixton Town Hall, Capitalism). The Wall is very much a sequel to Animals in that respect. That Gothic darkness allows jewels to shine, and that's exactly what happens in Comfortably Numb where you have a glimpse of hope illuminating the darkness of the whole opera. However, Nobody Home is a sort of pause in the doom and gloom. So yes, Waves might replace Nobody Home I suppose, but Nobody Home is also a Syd Barrett moment, very well written, with all the violins and stuff. See, there is DEFINITELY room for improvement in the Wall, particularly in the stage direction. Personnally, I would have spent most of the show behind the full brick wall. But as soon as you start deconstructing the thing, you start to see why the puzzle stands. Together they stand, devided they fall.

Vera and Bring The Boys Back Home make a political stand on the issue of Imperialism. Within the opera, the topic is relevant as a source of anxiety. In a frightening turn of event, imperialism has become the number one social problem in the world because of people like Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro and the rise of Fascism in Europe. You may agree with Roger Waters, you may disagree with some of his political take, sometimes I strongly disagree with his black and white cynical realpolitik views, but it doesn't really matter because the question is still relevant 40 years after the making of the rock-opera. Yes, Roger may be oversharing on the death of his Dad, but Vera and Bring the Boys Back Home are focused on the social angle and again, it adds anxiety to the Wall.
Interesting that second song, from David gilmour's first solo album, is put in there considering that sounds like part and I'm sure use later on as what do you want from me from The division Bell
The live Run Like Hell is the definitive version. I can't even listen to the studio version anymore lol
MC on the second in the flesh reminds me of Flash the Sloth
I got a feeling your Final Cut review might be scathing and harsh, and in some ways it has it coming. I can't help but love that album even with the drama.
One thing about The Final Cut, it has some of Roger's best vocals imo. He never sounded that good again.

I personally love the opening to "Building The Wall" with a distorted version of We'll Meet Again into an alternate version of Another Brick In The Wall. The fact that that and What Shall We Do Now weren't included on the final album is a sin!

I would like have dropped Nobody Home too. Most if side 3 just drags. I always wished that Rick could have done early floyd style instrumentals to emulate Pink's madness. Something like interstellar overdrive. Also, 2 of my favorite songs are from. The movie, tigers broke free is beautiful, all the mire so because it is his father's real story, and what shall we do just rocks, especially when one remembers Gerald scarfs incredible animations from the movie. You should’ve included When the Tigers Broke Free in place of Bring the Boys Back Home, even though it’s still sort of out of place, I think it’s still a much better song to include instead of Bring the Boys Back Home. Also on your edited version that can’t be shared or whatever, you could have the ending of When the Tigers Broke Free go into the looping trauma part of Bring the Boys Back Home and I don’t think it would be a weird transition. Still great playlist, I absolutely love the live show of The Wall, my dad bought the CD of it while it was still available and some of those songs in there are way better than the studio version. But I’ll comment on that again whenever you make your own review of it which I’m super excited for!
The closest I came was including it before Goodbye Blue Sky much like the film. I tried it in place of Vera and Boys but I ran into that same issue of pacing. But in terms of the story it does make a lot more sense.
"There's No Way Out of Here" from David's 1978 solo album would fit so nicely on the second half of The Wall.
Also, the 80-81 live version of The Wall is the definitive way of listening the album for me.

I made a remix of nostalgia critic's the wall, that original mix was trash so I remixednit with the original pink floyd backing tracks from the album and movie, and added extra songs from the movie, your run like hell parody, and matt ammar's review of the wall
I like vera and bring the boys but also I think Stanley Kubricks critique of vera by playing well meet again at the end of "Dr strangelove or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb" is a far far better critique of what the song stood for . He doesn't even have to say anything just plays it at the end of the movie in that beautiful sequence . I don't wanna spoil it if you havent seen it JT but honestly I don't recommend things often. YOUD LOVE THIS MOVIE MAN

But Roger wouldn't allow Stanley to cut any of the 20 minute song. Nick said he thinks they were such sticklers about it because they really wanted to be a part of 2001 a space oddesy hahah.

Excellent playlist JT. Not to sound too overwhelming, but were other elements considered like the 1990 Berlin concert, the unmade movie soundtrack, or even the original demos taken into consideration?
The point of the playlist was mostly to involve David and especially Rick as contributors. Obviously they weren't involved in the 1990 Berlin concert or most of the original demos. The only movie soundtrack song that was considered was When the Tigers Broke Free but I couldn't find a way to fit it in.
@@JTCurtisMusic Actually, I stopped short of suggesting songs that David had a hand in that are not PF songs, if only because some of the music signatures do bare a resemblance in their cadence and rhythms. As for WTTBF, they only place it does make sense is right at the top of the album, since it sets the whole cycle in motion.
The situation is all bands are made of HUMANS. They are flawed. We are flawed. The drive and ambition Roger had (and still has) continued and the others became comfortable with their circumstances and that resulted in the driven and ambitious person taking over (hey they usually do!). Another example is late Beatles Paul in the studio ringing other Beatles "hey guys when are you turning up?"
Fantasy albums are fun though other amusing discussions are The Beach Boys 'Smile' and The Beatles 'The White SINGLE album!. Find me an unflawed double album okay okay 'Electric Ladyland', 'Chicago Transit Authority'.
Summary It's Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' and it's more than enough!

Just here to mention that Rick was fired for refusing to work on the wall while they were on a thight deadline and David wanted to fire Nick at one point too.
It's easy to fall back on the "Roger is a dick" narrative but that's over simplifying things.
Already covered this in my main review for The Wall. The information you present is also oversimplified and most likely wrong.
