The Chevrolet Vega is a subcompact automobile that was manufactured and marketed by GM's Chevrolet subdivision from 1970 to 1977. Available in two-door hatchback, notchback, wagon, and sedan delivery body styles, all models were powered by an inline four-cylinder engine with a lightweight, aluminum alloy cylinder block. The Vega first went on sale in Chevrolet dealerships on September 10, 1970 [1]. Variants included the Cosworth Vega, a short-lived limited-production performance model, introduced in March 1975.[citation needed]The Vega received praise and awards at its introduction, including 1971 Motor Trend Car of the Year.[2][page needed] Subsequently, the car became widely known for a range of problems related to its engineering,[3] reliability,[4] safety,[5][6] propensity to rust, and engine durability. Despite a series of recalls and design upgrades, the Vega's problems tarnished both its own as well as General Motors' reputation. Production ended with the 1977 model year.[citation needed]The car was named for Vega, the brightest star in the constellation Lyra
The wheelbase on all models is 97.0 inches (2,460 mm). Width is 65.4 inches (1,660 mm). The 1971 and 1972 models are 169.7 inches (4,310 mm) long. The 1973 models are 3 inches (76 mm) longer due to the front 5 mph bumper. Front and rear 5 mph bumpers on 1974 to 1977 models add another 5.7 inches (140 mm).[citation needed]The hatchback, with its lower roofline and a fold-down rear seat, accounted for nearly half of all Vegas sold.[12]The sedan, later named "Notchback", is the only model with an enclosed trunk, and had the lowest base price.[13] The Kammback wagon has a lower cargo liftover height and a swing-up liftgate.[13]The panel express has steel panels in place of the wagon's rear side glass, an enclosed storage area under the load floor, and a low-back driver's seat. An auxiliary passenger seat was optional.[14] The low back seat was the result of this model being classified as a truck, which had fewer safety requirements than the passenger cars. The aluminum-block, inline-four engine was a joint effort by General Motors, Reynolds Metals, and Sealed Power Corp. The engine and its die-cast block technology were developed by GM engineering staff, then passed to Chevrolet for finalization and production. Ed Cole, involved with the 1955 small-block V8 as chief engineer at Chevrolet and now equally involved with the Vega engine as GM president, often visited the engineering staff engine drafting room on Saturdays, reviewing the design and directing changes, to the consternation of Chevrolet engineers and manufacturing personnel, who knew he wanted a rush job.[9] The engine in development became known in-house as "the world's tallest, smallest engine" due to the tall cylinder head.[15] Its vibration, noise, and tendency to overheat were rectified by 1974.[11][page needed]The Vega's suspension, live rear axle, 53.2% front/46.8% rear weight distribution, low center of mass and neutral steering give good handling. Lateral acceleration capacities are 0.90 g (standard suspension) and 0.93 g (RPO F-41 suspension). Steering box and linkage are ahead of the front wheel centerline, with a cushioned two-piece shaft. Front suspension is by short and long arms, with lower control arm bushings larger than on the 1970 Camaro.[16] Four-link rear suspension copies the 1970 Chevelle.[9]There are coil springs all around.[17][page needed]The chassis development engineers aimed for full-size American car ride qualities with European handling. Later torque-arm rear suspension eliminated rear wheel hop under panic braking. Brakes (front discs, rear drums) copy an Opel design, with 10-inch (250 mm) diameter single-piston solid rotors, 9-inch (230 mm) drums and 70/30 front/rear braking distribution.[9]All models share the same hood, fenders, floor pan, lower door panels, rocker panels, engine compartment and front end. In mid-1971, Chevrolet introduced an optional GT package for hatchback and Kammback models, which included the RPO L11 two-barrel 140 engine, F41 handling option, special tires, and trim - Auta a dopravní prostředky
When i was 12 years old , my older cousin had one , he installed a 396 and 4-11,s in the rear . The transmission did not fit into the car , and they had to cut all the metal around the trans , and the stock shifter was like 6 inches in the air over the trans .
When he would power brake, the interior of the car would fill up with smoke . Those were fun days. Mike Espo..
Beautiful 👍 always a joy to watch thankyou for all the time u put into the builds 😉😀👍👍
My pleasure 😊
I built a lot of funny car kits as a kid in the 70s. The Vega and Monza or some of my favorites body styles. I don’t remember if I’ve ever built this particular one but you did a great job. I never trust the Cap As the color of paint in the can. I think it was a CZcams video that turned me onto sprain out the color on plastic spoons which now I do religiously as I don’t think I would have the patience to soak a body and strip it Of a previously painted color. I currently use Tamiya spray cans or airbrush apple barrel for my military builds. You’re really turning me on to trying rest oleum as a cheaper alternative. The only thing I’ve ever had issues with buying big cans of paint is the usually go bad by the next time I decide to use them. Little Tamiya cans don’t last as long obviously past a build or two
Stripping Rusto off takes a couple hours in a Super Clean bath, comes off easily. Same as model sprays, a soak in Super Clean and it's gone fast. Tamiya paints though will fight you.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Nice job as always. Really enjoy when you throw in the scenes that show how you do the silver trim and back wash. Thank you for doing these build reviews. I was in hobby lobby and there were some youngsters in there buying models for the 1st time and I helped them the best I could , then gave them your info so they could watch your builds.
That was good on you to give those kids advice. Advice that they otherwise may have never gotten. It could possibly lead them becoming life long modelers.
Thanks for spreading the word and getting more people into the hobby!
Thanks and enjoy your hobby!

Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Great build - I like the final color you chose.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Great build as always! I've noticed you're adding more info on how you do things, which I'm still trying to find my "groove" on how I build. The Mrs got me that paint booth for my birthday so I can paint inside, where it's warmer than the garage! Enjoyed it! Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words! Enjoy your booth!
Excellent build and review Chris! Thank you for this. That is a mean-looking Vega you've got there. -Mark
As always, thanks for watching and taking part in the channel!
Awesome. I’m normally a circle track guy, but I have to have this one. Reminds me of kits I built as a kid. Also thanks for showing people you can paint chrome and you don’t need to de-chrome it. As always a pleasure seeing your builds. Not a model goes by I don’t do sub assemblies for painting. I also now have a full cup of markers thanks to you. Our pleasure, and have a great Holiday season.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Another great video review. Thank you very much for doing these videos, they've helped me decide which kits to get. Take care, Don.

I just order 5 Kits through Hobbylinc.Vega was 1 and they are
Coming Wednesday . I am just a 57 year old boy waiting for his toys.......Ah.........I mean art supplies.
😎💪👍
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Beautifully detailed kit!
Thanks for revisiting the detail work. Us latecomers to your channel have learned a lot from listening but it’s nice to see it done.
Just a thought, looking at the placement of the scoop I would suggest as well as nicely displaying the engine this scoop would be in a driver’s line of sight so a clear plexi scoop would allow for better vision.
A thought for anyone making the decision whether to paint or not.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
This kit hasn't been around for many years !
Good job mate, love the deckalz
Thanks Gary!
Awesome job as always. I don't build any more. But i like this one just might get this one. Love Vegas.

Pretty dang cool! Looks track ready! Looks like a fun kit.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
I remember the Vega's when they were new. It was such a crappy car & aluminum engine they didn't last too long. They were not to successful until they took the light body, built custom frames and installed a real race engine. Great build Chris, only you can do it the best.,
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Another excellent build! Hope they keep coming with these amt funny cars!
Thanks for stopping by the channel and leaving a nice comment!
Nice, thanks for Sharing Chris, Merry Christmas n God Bless All.

Nice build Chris!! My first car in the service was a 1975 Chevy Vega that I bought off my supervisor when he went to Turkey..
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
You know man, what I like about your videos-I know I've said it before,
but you make them SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
entertaining with the music & what you say during. Love it when you
show how you do certain steps, not in every video but it's very cool.
My building process is MUCH better and easier because I tune in.
Thank you once again my friend, and a very Happy Holidays to you!
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Awesome build! I'd love to see a tour of all the kits you've built.
I'd love to see him make a video of his collection of built kits .
No plans to give a tour of my home, most kits are stored or given away.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Awesome job as usual. , I need one of those turntables u got to hold the body & parts when u paint them. Hobby lobby ?
@@ronburley7026 I might be too late but the work stand in his videos is made by Tamiya (spl.?).
I purchased mine on eBay and the price was pretty reasonable, it comes with a decent selection of spring clips for holding small parts plus a separate body mount that replaces the flat turntable.
another nice one chris! thanx!
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Thank you for the wonderful video's through out the year Chris, wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Great build on this!
Still holding out for a stock Vega someday. I'd love to build a Yenko Vega Turbo Stinger!
Round 2 fairly recently reissued the stock MPC '78 Monza "hatchback" which was a rebranded Vega (the "real" Monza was called the 2+2) - their kit even has the Vega wheels and aluminum engine (the real car had an Iron Duke). I have a spare one I want to kitbash with this for a stock wagon.
Stay tuned, R2 has teased some pics!
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Good job as usual my friend
Awesome build Chris. Merry Christmas

Hey good buddy! I never thought I'd hear the words "Chevy Vega" and "wheelie bars" in the same sentence. I was a teen when those things were coming off the assembly lines, (I graduated H.S. in 1976) and my high school friends always said it was Chevy's version of a PINTO. Flash forward 100 years and who cares about public opinion of the real vehicle? That's a SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET model and that's the beauty of our hobby. Would love to see you build a YUGO TURBO...0 to 60 in 25 minutes! LOL! P.S. if ANYONE actually makes a kit of a Yugo Turbo I'll drive to Wisconsin and eat my hat in front of you.
Hurry up Chris, Find 1 😂😂😂 !!!

Nice job on your Vega Funny Car Chris.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
WOW, Chris, after enjoying / learning from hundreds of your builds, I see a pattern - it AIN'T the kits, it's YOU. While the kits you have chosen to build for us have all been top drawer productions, it is clearly the way you think about the builds and are able to see "different views" than those suggested by the box art. Of course your talents and experience do help. But you got something cool, man - and I for one
THANK YOU FOR SHARING...

Great build, paint it candy red and the stance it has it fits my vega wagon i had to own to a tee. Including the rear whheels sticking out, cause stock width 9 inch and 10 inch slicks!! Street drove it and raced it for 10 12 yrs miss it badly, especially the 2 ft in the air off the starting line. Gonna buy one and use the body to make another more accurate replica of my old hot rod
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Great 👍 video Chris!

Cool kit
I really like the bright aluminum on the interiorctin work, the chrome on the chassis looks awesome. I bought this kit a while ago and haven't started it yet, your build- and the paint!! Very nice,I would like to see how many models you have, you are good..
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
I have been trying the Rustoleum paint but having a hard time get it to dry. Am I doing something wrong. I use touch tone primer.
No idea, but I don't use that primer, maybe that has an effect.
Most of the 2X brands dry really fast if it's not humid or super cold or laid on too thick.
I love that green! Do you sand between color coats? How soon do you paint the color coat over the primer? Thanks.
Check out my video on painting with cheap spray cans.
That should help.
Short story, no, I spray and pray. No fancy work or sanding, etc.
Thanks!
I am shocked that someone hasn’t yet commented about wanting the stock parts.
Good evening Chris, great build as usual......I did have a question regarding your latest video builds. In the past when you would be ready to prime & paint the model, music would immediately play. Recently I've noticed that we hear the spray can for a few moments & then music kicks in. I'm just curious if there has been a reason or condition via CZcams that your common pattern has changed? It doesn't bother me in any way at all, it's just something recently I've noticed.....wondered if you noticed it too. Have a very Merry Christmas Chris....God bless.
Just a choice to change things up a bit, that's all.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Cool kit review. can't wait to get a coupleof them. you mentioned future floorwax. all I can find is the stuff blended with pledge. where do you find just the future floorwax? or, is it even still available by itself?
Future Floor Polish. It changes it's name all the time. Now it's called Pledge Floor Shine, at Walmart. It's not wax though, make sure you don't get a wax coating.
Do you think it would be possible to shorten the wheelbase in the rear? I would love to make a replica of my cousins Vega dragster. The wheels just don’t stick out past the fenders.
Sure, you can narrow the width on that axle.
great job, I like this green. one question do you ever have a problem with the Rustoleum paint taking a long time to dry
Sometimes if it's sprayed on too thick or too humid.
If you use other brands of primer it can also take weeks to harden, sometimes they do not mix well.
Any thoughts on using a bit of electrical tape as a pad for the drivers head on the roll cage? Great build!!
That would work fine, experiment and enjoy!
Do you brush the Future onto the clear pieces or shoot through an airbrush? Sorry if you have already answered this 100 times, but I’m new to your channel. Thanks, love your builds and vids.
Brush almost always unless the surface is full of delicate details, then I'll airbrush it.
I am curious. My son wants to build a staging lane bracket race scene. Is there any way you could give us an idea of what drag kits that body will fit on? THe Vega wagon bracket car is a personal fav, and I would like to build one for his scene
Looks Awesome got 1 on my list to buy , What paint did you use to chrome chassis ? Merry Christmas
Hey buddy, as always, paint colors sprayed on are always covered and labeled during the painting section of the video.
Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
Sweet
Thanks!
