2. Click Show Transparency Grid
3. Click Window
4. Click Image Trace
5. Click Direct Selection Tool
6. Click Image
7. Select High Fidelity Photo in Preset
8. Wait For Image Trace Process To Finish
9. Close Image Trace
10. Click Object
11. Click Expand
12. Click OK Button
13. Click Outside The Canvas
14. Click on White Background
15. Click Delete on Your Keyboard
16. Click on White Background
17. Click Delete on Your Keyboard
18. Click View
19. Click Hide Transparency Grid
20. Done!

Wow. Looking this up for a friend since I use a different program and it is significantly more difficult than it is for me.
I just have to right click the layer I'm working on and make sure the alpha channel is turned on. Let's me jump right to the background selection and removal part.
Edit to add I use a program called G.I.M.P. (stands for Graphic Image Manipulation Program if I recall correctly). It is free to use for everyone.
