Wow! Great job Mike 👍
Thanks Jackie!
Another great video and I really appreciate you honestly showing the frustrations as well as the successes. Let's face it what's a couple of weeks set back in a five-year restoration project.
Thanks Michael
Its all part of what goes on when restoring these old cars
Will perservere and get it worked out!=)
Mike just recently discovered your channel. I am really lucky to own a 991.2 Carrera S, but also have just taken ownership of a 1968 911T with an upgraded period correct 2.4 engine with two triple Weber carbs. Most of the big works like bare metal restoration and engine have been done to a very good standard but there is a lot of interior and aesthetic detailing still to do. You have created a definitive guide to restoring these cars, it is a phenomenal body of work and your craftsmanship and patience are phenomenal. Thanks for doing this, its an incredible reference and an invaluable asset to enthusiasts all over the world.
Hello Paul Thank you and welcome to the channel
Congratulations 68T! What a great project and cool car.
I really appreciate your comment and hope the series will be of some help for you
Wishing you the best of luck on your restoration work!
-Cheers!!
I hope your beloved dad will have a speedy recovery. Your videos are as usual very much inspiring! Take care Mike and keep feeding us please
Hello Giovanni Thanks
Dad is doing well and making remarkable progress
I will pass along your well wishes!
I feel your pain Mike. When I re-upholstered my 911 comfort seats the passenger seat was a breeze while everything about the driver's seat was a struggle. Sometimes things fall into place, sometimes they don't. Hang in there!
Hello Brian Thanks
Will get it sorted out eventually..Its funny how one side can be so easy and the other be so difficult in every way.
Not forgiving these old cars=)
My heart sank when I saw that scratch Mike. So sorry it’s being a pain. It will be worth all the hassles in the end. Even now, such beautiful work. Thank you for sharing this journey with us (the ups and downs). :-)
Hello Eric the thanks
Your Wile Coyote is so perfect for this frustration! I love it=)
Will persevere like Wile and hopefully get our rabbit!
Thanks Mike for the vid' and i hope your Dad gets well soon :))
Hello Richard
Your welcome
Thanks for the well wishes I will pass along to dad!
Dealing with blemishes like that just adds a chapter to the 'restoration story' of that beautiful car. Keep the videos coming, Mike. Your growing audience looks forward to each one. Hope your dad gets well soon.
Thanks Dan
Will sort through it.. This old car is not going to give it up easily but we will eventually
Thanks for the well wishes! I will pass along to dad=)
Excellent video Mike, it's good for people to see that we all have set backs & difficulties. I hope your Dad recovers well and is as comfortable as possible. My Mum has 7 broken ribs atm aswell.
Thanks Resto Blast
Its all part of the process..it can get awfully frustrating at times though=)
Thanks for the well wishes I will pass along to dad!
And best wishes for your moms recovery..she must be hurting unbelievable!
Cant wait to se it drive good job Mike
Thanks Troels
We are slowly getting there=)
Best wishes to your Dad, Mike. I made peace with my inability to hit perfection and would use that mark as a starting point for a story! I am certain you’ll be getting this one to 100%. Great job!
Thanks Tom..That perfection is always so elusive=) I try constantly but always seem to fall short.
I will pass along your best wishes to dad thank you. He is my inspiration!
Love your work. Gorgeous car :)
Thanks Michael!
I'm getting kinda sad that the body is almost done. But im sure the engine will provide some needed entertainment. Looks great!
Thanks James..Its nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel
Engine should be a lot of fun!=)
Oh man, sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he gets better soon. Great video as usual!
Hello Rodney thanks
I will pass along you well wishes to dad!
Very impressive. I think you'll find tweaking the inner lip on the door shell will help with fitting the felt piece. Its clear why Porsche changed their design and mounted the felts to the door shell in later iterations.
Hello Bill
Thanks..Did try tweeting but to no avail
It appears the main problem is the thickness of the new replacement felt. Its by Porsche but it cover a broad selection of cars.
The original style felts are no longer available. Much slimmer in design and profile
If you're struggling, it's going to be impossible for us mere mortals 😂 I hope your Dad feels better soon 😊👍
Hello Mattew
Thats funny=)
I will pass along your well wishes to dad Thank You!
Amazing work Mike! I'm sure you'll sort it out, I hope your dad has a speedy and full recovery!
Thanks David..will get worked out=)
Dad is doing a fantastic job..he is quite an inspiration!
Hope your Dad is okay Mike. While that slip of the finger nail is frustrating it’s a relatively easy fix in the grand scheme of things as you know. I.e. not a scratch on the paint of the door!
Hello Andrew thanks
I will pass along your well wishes to dad!
You are right! Its a small detail that can be worked out much simpler to a scratch in the paint..Ohhhh!!OMG!!
Thank you for the response. It is a 1976 Targa and the seals need replacing. Great Video
You're welcome Dennis Good Luck!
I admire your patience. You persevere until you get it right. I am having a hell of a time replacing the rubbers in my side vents (opening) windows. I've tried rubbers from different manufacturers to no avail. Will keep trying.
Hello Hugh
Thanks..those vent windows are tough!! good luck with them!
It is such a great, wonderful work from you, with soooo much passion.... and then... something happens, what makes you really frustrating, angry, sad,.... I know that, happens to me too on my projects. You are doing so well Mike, you will find a way. Greets from Germany
Hello Thomas
Thank you!
Its all part of the process..We will get through it no doubt but it sure would be nice to catch a break sometime=)
No break on these doors..they have been the toughest part of the build
Cheers to Germany!
Just finished installing seal on outer door trim , I slid the rubber from the end of trim in about 15 seconds ,used a little silicon on rubber...... have thoroughly enjoyed your journey!
Hello Andrew Thanks
Looks like you have been spared from the restoration gods wrath =)
Glorious
Cool
Sorry for the frustration Mike! This level of detail isn't easy, but you will persevere.
You have the chromed brass garnish rail which is much harder to work with than the aluminum rail on my car.
Did you get those plastic door hole plugs from Stoddard? I need several of those.
Best wishes with your dad.
Hello Tom
These doors have been the toughest challenge so far. Will get it though though I appreciate the encouragment.
A test in my limit of patience.grrr=)
I got those plugs from Porsche ..off hand don't remember the part number but they are available from studded also.
Thanks for the well wishes! I will pass along to dad=))
This car is just so nice. I wonder if the men at Porsche when it was built had these issues ? I do realise they were not building for any Concourse showing but it looks so detailed and difficult to do.
Hello Graham..Thats an excellent question.
I have seen lots of evidence where they did struggle adjust and making things fit.. Cant imagine the pressure they went through
on an assembly line
I found your channel while looking to see if there was an easier way to remove the pins from both the window crank to remove the door panels from my 356
The best complement I can give you is that you make it look soooooo easy, and we all know is not
I think the key is patience and I can tell from your voice that you have a ton of it!!!!!
If you can could you reply on removing the window crank, thanks
Hello Victor welcome to the channel!
To be honest none of it is easy..its just a matter of perseverance
Removal of the window crank should be straight forward.. A center screw holds in the crank. If you back it out the crank should pull straight off. Sometimes the splines get ground off over the years and they can't be re-used if that's the case.
I hope this helps!
I will afford one piece of advice. Thread locker on window handle screw can be useful. Wish you good health to you and your family!
Thank you Krassimir
Also same to you! be safe and thanks for the tip!
Immaculate restoration. Fingernails sometimes get in the way. With my new project, I'm going to be leaning on your videos heavily to show me the way. First up, what's the type of red grease you're using for all of the interference slide lubrication? Just regular red sticky grease? Looking really good, Mike.
Hello Chris thanks
The dreaded slip of the grip can do havoc on finish materials..will get through it though.
All door lubricantion is Valovline general purpose grease. Works fantastic and lasts a lifetime or at lease whats left of mine=)
Good Luck!!
Like everyone else I'm a great admirer of your patience and attention to detail. Your tutorials have have provided lots of useful advice for my own Porsche project and I'm looking forward to the last video in your 911 series. I'll be even more careful after "ultimate frustration"! Hope you Dad recovers quickly Mike.
Hello Peter
Thank you..This car has taught me a new level of patience for sure
It truly has been a test. We will get perserver and press on to the engine=)
Thanks for the well wishes I will pass along to Dad!
Hi Mike,
Great video, would you happen to know the part number for the inner window seal the one at 11.03 the part number that comes up for that looks nothing like yours.
Many Thanks.
pls make a rebuild project of the manual transmission of your 1967 Porsche.
Excellent work. Question what do the witch hats/door plugs do?
Hello Marcus Thanks
The witch hats are basically liners for the metal clips that insert into them.
They help smooth the insertion of those clips and act as a buffer to prevent squeaking.
Without them it would be difficult to intsall the door panels and remove them as you would have a metal to metal situation.
Hi mike, i have a question a will make my own door panels, did the upholsterer use a regular cord for the door pocket, was it flexible/elastic and how does it hold up, very nice build an detailed shots, very nice :)
Hello MaterialValley Thank you.
Yes the cord had elastic properties to it. So far its holding up nicely..The cord is pulled thru the edge of the pocket at the top and tied tightly to the back side of the panel. Gives just the right amount of stretch when accessing the pocket.
Good luck on your new door panels!
Cheers!
Hey Mike, I know you're busy cruising around in the car at this point, but I have a door trim question. I know you had to condense a lot for the video, but a what point did you put on the fuzzy strip that goes on the outside of the door facing the outside of the window (below the chrome trim strip)? The one with the five metal "buttons" that push into the holes. I'm having a heck of a time getting the buttons into the holes and have been told it has to be done before the glass goes in. I caught a section in this video where you have the glass in but the holes are still visible. Thanks!
Hello Mike
Yes the inside fuzzy should install prior to glass. That should give you a bit more room to get your fingers inside to press it in. Could be tough with the glass in there. Those clips take a bit of pressure to get them to pop in.
Good luck!
What is the best way to remove the door chrome piece where the Channel seal is placed? The seals are too short on my Targa and I ordered new ones. How does this piece pop off without damaging the paint or the chrome? Your videos are incredible!
Thanks Dennis
I recommend a set of plastic tools to pry it off..also a little spray lubricant will be helpful as the retainer clips will surly by dry. Maybe some masking tape on the painted surface where your tools will be leveraging against.
Good Luck!
Mike what did you use for the vapor barrier inside the door panels? Thinking of replacing mine (or what's left of ) in my Civic. 😅
Hello Mark
The vapor barrier was 4 mil clear plastic..shelf item at any Home Depot or Lowes
Good Luck!
@@MikesRestorations 👍
Hi Mike - do you have the part number for the top of door grey block clip found at 3:30? cheers
Part number 90153143920
You can get them at Stoddards
Good Luck!
I would have ignored it till everything else is done...
Not a bad idea! but will perservere and get it sorted out=)
