There is another video here on youtube...I think a vic firth spotlight...in which Gavin discusses ghost notes. He says specifically that he wants people to hear his ghost notes, so he plays and records in such a way to make sure they are captured. With these superstar musicians, almost nothing is unintentional.
I'm a drummer myself and I've been involved with drums and percussion since I was 8 years old. As fate would have it, unfortunately I only discovered Gavin Harrison recently. After all these years of listening to the best of the best - I mean, Buddy Rich, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Marco Minnemann, Virgil Donati, Benny Greb and all the other monster drummers we know, including Neil Peart and Danny Carey, of course - I'm fully convinced that I have never heard a drummer, as a true MUSICIAN, as perfect, as complete (in absolutely ALL ASPECTS, including the sound of the drums itself) as Gavin Harrisson, and I am 58 years old now.
...need to say about the touring guitarist. IMO, Mr.Darran Charles is definitely the one who deserves respect as persistent, devoted in his work as an important figure in alternative but progressive rock! Steven Wilson made us crazy about this (let's say) subgenre of progressive music, and now we have outstanding bands who breathe as one! Cheers.
This is amazing on so many levels. Gavin Harrison may be the most "musical" drummer I've ever heard. In spite of his seemingly unrivaled virtuosity, what really makes him stand out is that everything he plays serves the song. Outstanding!
When you have a drummer of that caliber the music seems to just become surreal and plays itself, I haven't played with anyone even close, of course, lol, but even a half-ass drummer made me play better and looser. He is beyond normal though, the minute he entered the scene Porcupine Tree's In Absentia took on a whole new life.
This snare micing and that sound engeneering are superb!! Listen how smoth and audible is those ghost notes at the beginning of the sound! And he's playing with his fingers!!
Let me tell you something: I've been involved with drums and percussion since I was 8 years old. As fate would have it, unfortunately I only discovered Gavin Harrison recently. @@walterrserrano Couldnt agree more with everything you said. Ive heard everyone from Dennis Chambers, Jeff Porcaro, Dave Weckl, Neil Peart, Marco Minneman , Virgil Donati etc just like yourself, but Gavin's musicianship, tone, immense musicality with odd times, making the basics sound so special, his desire to explore every aspect of the kit(including tom rims), all served for the song is mind boggling. Even my parents who are not musicians sat through like 5 gavin harrison playthroughs. :p .
There is no comparison between Gavin Harrison and Neil Peart. Harrison is light years beyond Peart and Peart knew it. Peart is definitely no Professor. That honor goes to Bill Bruford who actually has a PhD in music from Surrey University in the UK. Peart is definitely the “POAT” (Poser Of All Time). It’s laughable how so many of the great mentally unwashed and uninformed falsely equate “Celebrity With Legitimacy”. Wake up!
@@Tannhauser62 Your opinion is your own. Facts matter. Unfortunately many slavish Rush/Neil Peart are impervious to facts or reason. Ignorance is bliss, until it isn’t!
@@Tannhauser62 based on your response you’ve been mercifully spared the ravages of critical thinking and intelligence. To top it off you must be very very young and immature. You’re obviously not a drummer and can’t read standard drum charts. If you could you’d know how utterly simplistic Peart’s drumming is; primarily single stroke rolls in creative sticking patterns and odd time signatures. Pity those for whom intelligence and wisdom are of no benefit.
Watched these boys in Manchester last night, they were superb. As a drummer myself, I particularly enjoyed Gavin's performance. What a frickin player he is!
Hey drummers, you may have heard songs in which you may think "I think I could improve a bit the drums..." , I bet my ass it WILL NEVER happen with a Gavin Harrison song!
Gavin Harrison himself disproved your claim, stating that beyond the baseline of serving the music, what it takes to make a song "better" is all subjective :)
Seen Gavin Harrison with Porcupine Tree a few times, in the past. Then King Crimson a few months ago. Looking forward to seeing TPT in Birmingham in 2019. As many people have said on here, without shadow of doubt Gavin is by far the most talented drummer alive today on the planet.
Gavin Harrison has a flawless technique and draws from a seemingly bottomless well of original ideas. The most "musical" drummer I've ever heard. Outstanding all around!
This group is so amazing! Watched them for the first time a few days ago in Oslo. I'm a drummer, so I've obviously watched Gavin closely for years now. An hour or so before the concert he walked right next to me, which was kind of a shock (didn't expect that). I was lucky enough to be the one standing closest to him during the whole concert. They truly are awesome live.
Gavin Harrison,- you are "sick" and "wicked" on the drums,- and all that you do comes from inside your head,- amazing!!!! Love what you do,- and as one said,- you even make the kitchen sink sound fantastic! Wish you a long and healthy life, drumming!
I must admit as a big fan of Gavin I didn't know what to make of this band at first but really I have to admit I've become a fan they're really good. A little bit different but quite entertaining. I think he's surrounds himself with just phenomenal musicians wherever he goes. Great solo.👍
strange how one line can hook you with a band for good, " Don't be afraid to miss me" hooked me with TPT since the single was released and in-exile now isn't even in my fave 10 songs of TPT
REally great band, Gavin Harrison is spectacular on the drums. He always comes up with amzing drum parts as well as great feel!!! my new favourite band!!
Li ho visti a Roma un mese fa, e pur non essendo un patito di questo genere, devo ammettere che mi sono sembrati freschi e interessanti, una vera piacevole scoperta...adesso sono in fissa.
First time hearing this band - apart from being very familiar with Gavin from Porcupine Tree, the guitarist intrigues me - his sound, very sustained - I can't see him using an e-bow, maybe a sustainer?
Props to the sound engineer. The fact they picked up Gavins fingernail gost notes is freakin awesome
Yeah one of the best live recordings I've heard in ages
@Johnathan Reginald The question is... can Instaportal give me the abilities of Mr Gavin?

Thinking the same thing. Great quality audio

They're really lucky, they have the best drummer in the world.
Only possible now that Niel Peart is retired. While he was still playing, no one was even in the same universe as he was.
Danny carey to
Well and Vinnie? Vinnie is Vinnie
@@robertociai6205 vinnie Paul? No way... the creativity and virtuosity of peart and Harrison are on another level, add Danny Carey to that...
Pineapple Thief were great before Gavin joined. But, yes, they are lucky too.
Came here for my dose of Gavin, but ended up falling in love with The Pineapple Thief.
Same here dude.
You have so many fantastic albums to listen to. None are bad, just like Porcupine Tree. It's odd, but who cares, we benefit!
Tightly Unwound is a great starter album for Pineapple Thief, tbh
Only band where I can see more comments on Drummer than the main song...Magic of Gavin :)
Proof that an incredible drummer can make a good band sound great!
They're much more than a "good band". This is amazing songwriting and perfomance.
They were amazing way before Gavin came
Yeah they were, but, they're even better with Harrison.
Check out our latest album. You might like! Cheers from Canada! 😉
That's ur a true man
4:23 Damn that rhythmic modulation though, smooth...

The five-stroke roll that Gavin plays in the beats is brilliant
All things Gavin say, do and play I might think that is briliant. I almost feel the need tô apreciate his awesome feeling for drums and música.
You've watched the drumeo video, right?
This song is the perfect playground for Gavin Harrison to do his magic.
This is amazing on so many levels. Gavin Harrison may be the most "musical" drummer I've ever heard. In spite of his seemingly unrivaled virtuosity, what really makes him stand out is that everything he plays serves the song. Outstanding!
Exactly. He's one of the most musical drummers ever. He drives the music in the most perfect way without getting in the way.

What a drummer! this song makes me cry.
that guitar solo straight from the album version effortlessly though
ikr. sounds exactly the same.
That's my favourite part of the song. The climax imo
That metric modulation in the guitar solo is soooooo tight. Next level tight...
Emotional music force🌊🌊great Gavin!
This snare micing and that sound engeneering are superb!! Listen how smoth and audible is those ghost notes at the beginning of the sound! And he's playing with his fingers!!
it's the beautiful sonor protean signature snare
I believe Gavin works really hard with techs and his own tuning to get his sound
The fingers thing is a Bernard Purdie thing. Look him up.
The sounds is class. Clear as a bell. Also, Gavin’s sound is amazing before it’s even Mic’d.
I was a little blown away by that, the engineering on this is crazy, plus, I´d never seen someone play ghost notes with their fingers.
Even Gavins straight groove post the first solo sounds so good! Its nothing short of a miracle to make a straight groove sound that good!

Gavin Harrison is the greatest but that Guitar Solo though! 😍
Same. I rarely comment on anything, but I was going to comment on that solo and you beat me to it. As musical as it gets. Every note perfect.

Con Gavin alla batteria, sarebbero formidabili anche i "Cugini di Campagna". Wow!
The melodies this band writes....🔥
"It's everybodies job in the band to play in time, but it's the drummers job to make the time interesting."

I miss Darran Charles, definitely my fav Pineapple Thief guitarist

Phil Collins?
Gavin Harrison can just make any band sound better and here it's playing with one of the finest musician. It's eargasm.
The guitar solo hits perfectly!
Excellent live performance!

Can't stop listening to this beauty!!
Not only one of the most amazing drummers out there but the sound of that kit, especially the snare, beautiful!
One of the firt Band videos that people only talk about the drummer. Yes. Gavin is unique, clever and a awesome musician and artist.
This is more porcupine tree than I expected it to be
Yeah did just sound like it :(
the initials are the same
The two bands inspired one another for years.
