Correcting a Neglected Espalier

In this video we will discuss how to do corrective pruning on a neglected espalier pear tree. First we will remove the large crossing branches and the 4 to 5 year old upright branches without damaging the spurs.
Next, we will remove the bamboo supports and remove ties that have grown into the bark.
The last step is to tip back the water sprouts and remove the ones that will not produce spurs. Make sure you tip the water sprouts back to a bud that is facing away from the trunk to encourage the new growth to grow out.
