Edgar Allan Poe's The Oval Portrait (1972) GOTHIC HORROR
Vložit
- čas přidán 23. 12. 2013
- Story by: Edgar Allan Poe
Stars: Wanda Hendrix, Barry Coe, Gisele MacKenzie
Director: Rogelio A. González
In this Gothic Horror, a woman finds herself possessed by the soul of another woman trapped inside a painting!
TRIVIA: "One Minute Before Death" has often been confused as being an alternate title for "The Oval Portrait." Although they were made by the same crew, featured most of the same actors, and were both based on Poe, they are in fact two entirely different movies that were filmed at the same time. when i was a teen i would creep downstairs in the early hours to watch movies like these ,in the 80s it would take me so long to get down those stairs to avoid the floorboards from creaking and waking my mother lol but it was so worth it
the boss if only you knew why those stairs creaked
Friday Fright Night! On right after Friday Night Videos!
Fred Jaminson wtf, so why put the alarm.....sleepy, just kidding same here.
No tv in your bedroom...?
@Eric Denson ...in my family we could not have a tv in the bedroom till we graduated High School....if we wanted to watch tv we watched with the family....society has lost a lot now with kids having their own tv, others off on computers, others texting...phones (that also we have one phone in hallway lol).... now parents sit alone wondering if they even have kids lmao
Thank you for uploading this. I'm a huge Poe fan. I'm an older woman living in a Senior Housing complex and have been isolated for 1.5 years due to the Pandemic. I've lost 27 friends/neighbors/family members. These quality uploads have kept me entertained throughout this harrowing ordeal. Thank you!
sending you some love from Down Under on a gloomy rainy night. i did just notice a listing for an audiobook clip of Christopher Lee reading Poe! I'm sorry to hear about the loss of loved ones you've experienced. I'm also a lady into spooky gothic stuff, and have been living a fairly confined existence as of late, so please let me know if you need any further suggestions for entertainment! I'd be more than happy to come up with some ideas. Hope you are well. xx
PS I'm glad you wrote, i think often of folk in your situation, but of course we aren't allowed to visit etc. I'm sure an immersive story is great medicine for these conditions. Wishing you all the best.
God bless you.
Sending blessings and a prayer
Sorry you lost everybody close. I am also a senior in Medford Oregon. I live with family. Grandkids, but do not get a chance to get out..I hope things get better for you soon though. God Bless.❤🙏
I was born in the 60's and grew up in the 70's. Best of times! I love old horror and I love Poe!!
Best era ever wish we could all go back I feel sorry for the kids growing up these days they have no freedom or imagination, all the best
Me too; born in the 60's&grew up in the 70's=Wonderful Times👍👌🏾
Also: am a big fan of these kind of movies. 🙂👍
Old movies are so much fun with orange blood, over-acting and dramatic orchestral music to emphasize the important bits. This movie has a lot of eye candy from a bygone era. Love the long gowns and the gorgeous american manor home.
Big budget, big names and big production movies are Nothing compared to these Gothic(especially Italian) movies! these are entertaining little gems, they have a heartbeat of their own!! Thanks for the upload!!
Definite "Dark Shadows" influence. Man, I loved that old show when I was a kid.
Paul Christman I had all the gold key dark shadow comics and Marilyn Ross paperbacks of dark shadows,I really loved DS ,can't believe I'm watching this just two hrs later then someone else.
I used to watch Dark Shadows when I was a kid and attend their current festivals each year w/ the remaining (still alive) actors.
My grandmother used to watch dark shadows. Barnabas Collins scared me to death😄😄
Check out Amazon Prime. They have a lot of the Dark Shadows movies and original series
Same
Denise this movie made me cry I can feel the love between Rebecca and Joe wonderful moving movie wonderful actors and actresses
These films always featured what must be the worst prolonged thunder and lightning storms on Earth.
50 years later , and im still watching this movie now since 2019
I can smell that 70s horror vibe now ... Love the movie ... I remember spending my nights alone watching these kinds of movie in the 80s (when I was a child) ...
Yeah I used to watch horror movies in the wee hours of the morning then get up an go to school on time, and never miss a day.
... LIKE A QUALITY HAMMER-HOUSE ???..🤔🥂🏴
Me too how I remember😮
Been watching these old Gothic classics Inc Dark Shadows ever since the late 1960's....and all the Hammer Horrors as well. The best.
Eleven minutes in and it reminds me of the fine acting (lol) and sets on the Dark Shadows TV show.
Simply put, brilliant!
Thanks!
One of my favorite EAP movies, thanks for the upload!!! Never gets old.....
It was a dark and stormy night.....
SNOOPY!
Riff Raff (I named my cat after him years and years ago).
Those three candles sure give a lot of light.😊
It was the best of quotes, it was the worst of quotes!
@@williamschlenger1518 --blooper alert!
Fantastic movie,I've seen all Poe's movies with Vincent Price and The Pit and the Pendulum is my favorite, but this is just as good, very creepy at the ending which you totally won't expect Creeepy and a surprise ending OMG!
This is very much different than Poe. He died in 1849 and the Civil War was 1861-1865.
A drama club production? A student project? Where did you dig this one up? Not sure what's more cringy, the story line or the production...I love it!
Spending evening alone watching this movie, thanks for upload.
Thanks for watching! May the Sauce be with you.
Loved that. Very rough, scary, and engrossing. Thank you.
this dramatic background music is killing me!
THIS WAS THE BEST LOVE MOVIE OF CRAZY PEOPLE I HAVE EVER SEEN, THIS WAS THE BEST, THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
THANK YOU 🤗🤗🤗
@@GG-PAT you're welcome
Love Poe's stories
its a masterpiece, thanks for upload this movie
...actually very creepy,and a good story,can't beat the classics❤
Love these older flicks, thank you for sharing with us! I just subscribed to your channel, it looks great and so organized!!
A nice trip back in time .... the 70's and the Civil War...perfect on this cold dreary night. TY PizzaFlix! 👍
classic Poe! unfortunate casting of actors - but still satisfying. perfect for this epic rainy day. thank you so much for the upload.
Wow! Mrs. Warren saw some crazy things go down in her day.
“Where should we put him?!”
“Well, I suppose we could put him in my room... it’s about the only place in the house your father doesn’t go.”
😆 😆 😂
SO campy! I love it!
I was thinking the same thing.😂
I love these older movies. Thanks ❤😊
Read the short story by Poe. It only takes around 10 minutes to read it. In the story, there are only 3 characters...the painter, his bride, and his vallet (who only briefly is mentioned). This movie is not even _loosely_ based on Poe's story.
classic horror always the best
Carol Burnett would be perfect for playing the part of Rebecca. Come to think of it, The whole cast would do a great job making a spoof of this movie!
Didn't they do the Dallas spoof Fresno !! ??
If you really wanted to like this, find The House That Would Not Die. It is a TV movie of Barbara Michael's blood chilling book Ammie, Come Home; and another civil war unrequited love/ghost story starring Barbara Stanwyck and others. Thank you for the upload. This is a great listen and watch while one cleans up Christmas decorations movie.
I wish to thank you for your suggestion "house that wouldn't die." really great film and Barbara is outstanding! im going to look for ammie come home for tonight's entertainment. thank you again - best regards.
you are so welcome. Have you seen The Legend of Hell House w/ Roddy McDowell, or The Sentinel w/Chris Sarandon and Burgess Meredith? also very good 70's movies of haunted houses. google them, I have seen them online. I live "where three roads meet" (literally), and am fascinated by studies of Hecate, Innana, et al. Peace in the New Year!
what a delight! thank you for the suggestions - im going to search for them. I too live at a crossroad. As a lifelong devote' of Hecate' it seems appropriate i would find myself at one. so nice to know Her legion is still alive. blessings to you dear one - love and light
No
Karloffrules I agree
Liza looks about almost 60 and doesn't look anything like Rebecca who is clearly younger...
Really good depiction of the story. i just read it and was looking for a good movie of the story to really seal my understanding of it. :) Thanks for posting!
That hair is insane! LOL Still a good classic to watch.
sanguinelynx
I love the hairdos...
Neck-breaking, absurd looking & uber-aging for the un-young, OBVIOUSLY‼️ LOL...
Coffee and brownies watching this really enjoy 😍
I want a velvet cape.... completely useless in Southern California but I could walk around the house feeling majestic? Older horror/suspense shows had some class, an attempt at grandeur when filming an older type of story. Now computers put in phony effects and you can feel the phony. The realism ruined the imagination.
Cool. Love this comment and totally agree.
not useless... Use it like a robe.. OUt to get the mail..simple foundations beneath in case of openage.
I have a black velvet one and a forest-green velvet one, because I used to work at a Renaissance Festival, so I had several cloaks for utility in different weather. If you seriously do want one, the three easiest ways are:
1. A Renaissance Festival near where you live (these are often excellent, heirloom quality, but expect to pay more for the quality)
2. An online store specializing in period-appropriate clothes (less expensive, but often good quality)
3. Amazon. This is the most affordable source, but if you get a cheap one, it'll feel like a cheap one
Have fun! 🤗
xyz making one or having it make is also an option. standard patterns are available. and book suggested ones. (see patterns for Theatrical costumes)
Yessss! You can feel the phony... I want that cape too. Velvet! I'm on Long Island in NY. I think it would be funny to wear in S. Cali. Lol 😁👍👏
The one who portrayed Lisa looks like a grandmother
Yeah she did look kinda long in the teeth...
She did look a little older than her character should have been~ eh still an awesome movie!! I LOVE these B horrors!
Size of her forehead 👾 😂😂
This movie can best be described as MELODRAMATIC!!
My goodness....and I enjoyed it thoroughly!
This was shot back-to-back with another Poe movie called One Minute Before Death. It was made by the same people, has the same exact cast and was filmed on the same sets but is almost impossible to find now.
"Sinister Cinema" has both films available on DVD! (Also, both can be found on CZcams.)
While Poltergeist was happening that lady grabbed herself a drink! Wow. That haunting doesn't phase her at all.
Thank you!
I love this film and I wish you post more of this kind films and thanks a lot for posting this one
Thank you for sharing this has made my day
If a lot of you ignored all the dated props and exaggerated styles on the actors and watched the movie for what it was, you would be feeling a lot of emotions during several scenes in this film, especially during the flashback with Rebecca and the Soldier. In keeping in-trend with the way some horror films were made in the 1970s, the film is quite good, and maybe the acting is a bit more theatrical but it was still good. And the mid-atlantic accents used in the film also made me believe it was a British production until I listened carefully and noticed how the "r"s were pronounced. The adaption was also interesting and there was a lot more going on in the film than just a two-page script haha. The only problem I had with the film was that the pace was irregular at times and so what seemed like a hour into the film was only 30 minutes. It did like this film and it's a good watch on a grey, rainy day.
SLACKER614 no Poe would never have had her son marry the girl they knew that would have caused problems. Although in the South they did have first cousins marrying all the time which they do know caused a lot of inherited illnesses and you can pretty much trace a few illnesses straight back to if your lineage comes from the south or the Royal lines in Europe. It always cracks me up that Eugenics was that people of poverty etc. shouldn't be able to reproduce but it was the Industrial Revolution and the Westward Movement that allowed the poor to gain momentum and move up and that's helped produce more healthy people in the world. Bloodlines of any species becomes weaker if there's not enough diversity. In humans it is not only physical but inherent mental health issues. Look at what happens to any autocracy that runs too long anywhere in the world, insanity barreness impotency even deformed limbs. An example is Churchill came from the most powerful family of England at one time and yet there are no heirs left & the house is a museum. His only son was dying at a very young age and left no heir to the dukedom. Or we can thank the Romanov's for hemophilia. That is why the wealthy are so desperate to clone.
@@purgatoryofhope1414 I'm not disagreeing with the problems of intermarrying too closely or the other stuff. Just wanted to correct you about the Spencer-Churchills. Winston Churchill was a grandson of one of the Dukes of Malborough but was never in line for the title. The current Duke still owns Blenheim Palace and has 2 sons. It's just open to the public. A lot of them do that because these places are too expensive to maintain without funding. Blenheim is bigger than Buckingham Palace.
Have you ever READ Edgar Alan Poe!? There's as much school-girl mush in his stories, as a road accident!
Grey rainy day here, perfect for the watching!
My very good friend is Winston's descendant and finds your remarks extremely funny
This was like a car accident - terrible but one can't turn away!
:))
Who's watching in 2019? Today is actually 9.19.19. 😁

These classic gothic movies have a ceeep vibe all there own!I love to sit down and have a nice jigger of Brandy on a cold night and enjoy these Atmospheric Gothic Shows!Especially Poe!!!
Poe was a great influence on my work (among a few others of the genre) ...I think my mind became warped reading stories like this when I was young, turning me into a writer of horror stories lol...thanks for the upload, was great fun watching....
who are you? never heard of you
@@brianhammer5107 Not many have...but that is ok...Millions of writers out there. You can't be expected to know us all.
True love ❤️ I got chills at 34:50. The music is gut wrenching too.
this is got to be one of the loopiest films I have ever seen except of course for those from Ed Wood.
I like the chandelier that bounces up and down when the goblin laughs. Im gona look for one of those on ebay
One of the best films ever made... a model in the history of cinema.
You are joking
Deborah Mcgee . Hi there, bet something that I was joking, sure you win. Cheers!
A dark romance I love it 🥰 I wish someone loved me as deeply as Joseph loved Rebecca
rachel183321 I know
You gotta love Edgar Allan Poe! I'm thinking Emily Bronte must have read this particular story before she wrote Wuthering Heights
Almost all the story is not Poe at all. So any similarities between this and WH, are likely to be the result of the influence of WH on the scriptwriter, rather than of Poe on Emily Bronte.
I have to laugh at the alcoholic cook...she doesn't bother with a glass, she just guzzles the booze out of the bottle!
And loving a ghost is one thing, but smooching and dancing with a corpse? That's quite another! Poor man...
He DEFINITLY had some issues, bless his heart!
La disfrute muchísimo gracias 👋
On the upsi de, the film is nice and clear and the audio is wonderful as well; I didn't need my headphones to hear it.
I try to find decent quality films , but its not always going to be the case.
or use speakers
It's a beautiful movie to watch. Thank you.
I freaking love Poe's every work. very good movei, in books better, but like movie, masterpiece.
WOW! That was mind blowing & amazing! Such Billowy Romantic Splender is this tale of UnDying Love...
Thx for uploading 10.29.19
Loved this movie x
Thank you! Great movie
Thank you
Saw this as a teen and thought it was a GREAT movie! 🤣🤣🤣 Still enjoying, though!❤️
When I was looking for the original gothic horror by Edgar Allan Poe, I was amazed at the romance and hidden past. ↱ "* *Poe couldn't marry the girl in her first love because she was flirted with her cousin." Joseph, Rebbeca, Romance Flashbacks scene and BGM’s. I was able to cry!😭
What a cool movie! Thank you :)
My first thought when I saw that portrait is that she looks quite a bit like Kathryn Leigh Scott who had several roles in the Dark Shadows.
,yes, she does look a lot like Josette. This has a definite Dark Shadows flavor. I enjoyed it!
This does have a DARK SHADOWS vibe... except, DARK SHADOWS had MUCH-better acting.
Really Great. Thanks
OUTSTANDING!
very nice story love..thank you for watshing..😮😢😊
Thanks
Omg the end, the poor house keeper I know she was freaked out I would have been so scared! LOL Great Movie man! Gotta love the horror classics!
I've never seen this, awesome.
poor Lisa looks older than her Mum, and such wild hats, oh wait, that's not a theatrical wig is it, quality Poe cheese, many thanks
5:22 that wall paper is the scariest thing in this movie😆
The wallpaper was definitely bold and stood out.

Mccartney Drouin 🤣🤣🤣
Weird editing choices, pacing too slow, bad dialogue, casting mistakes.. Nah. Not for me. But thank you. Always cool to see older movies.
One of best films ever....

Never say "If you going ill be waiting for you forever" you'll be hunting the house forever.
The acting is just awful. This is just what I need during this pandemic! lol
LMAO The lady in the white dress is always squat-running! I think something was wrong with her knees during filming!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My brain is dying,
I'm 13 minutes in and I'm not sure that I can enure anymore. Yikes!

Wooow such a wonderful story
