@Mark (217maka) The emphasis is on the "vain," not the repetition. Repeating a prayer is only wrong if the prayer is said without Christian faith. I’m a protestant who started to get closer to God and I started to pray to God and ask what church do you want me to go to Lord and all the sudden I wanted to learn more about the church about the church history I didn’t even know there was something called church fathers. I started to look at the history of the church, and I found out there were something called orthodox Christians. I can’t explain it but my heart gets pulled to the orthodox church. I don’t know why. Orthodox Christianity is very foreign to me. The only explanation I can come up with is that it’s God leading me that way. I started to do the Jesus prayer every morning no matter what. I also do it when I feel the need to sin or need to center my self through the day. I have a ten bead prayer rope or rosary? I don’t know what it would be called. But now even just holding it I know it may sound weird but it feels almost like a weapon. The priest said sometimes bad things creep into our thought and it’s true. One day I was praying the Jesus prayer and vividly I could see a woman with a burnt face staring back at me mad. I was not afraid I stared back at her saying the Jesus prayer over and over again smiling because I didn’t feel fear. I don’t know why my thoughts brought that vision up but I was amazed how clear she was without me even thinking of anything like my mind went there.

If you can dedicate a whole day to it, it is well worth the effort. If it becomes a permanent state of your being, so that you are ever present, and never again submerged by the world, then there is nothing further that can be done. That is everlasting life. Being present, without interruption or disturbance. Death cannot touch such a being, and no Evil can deceive it. I don't know Fr Spyridon's view, but I understand this to be sainthood.
