This is a Motormouth couple car review of 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 compact luxury crossover. The GLC 300 has a 2L turbo-charged 4-cylinder engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission, which is very smooth. It has 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque and goes 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. I find it to be a great daily driver with a balance of performance and comfort. It’s agile, light and nimble with a quiet cabin. I can understand why people who own one, love it. The exterior is sporty and has a bit of an athletic look to it. If you want to elevate the exterior and make it look more muscular, there are packages available to do that. Our test model in Brilliant Blue has the Night Package for $2,100 CAD/$2,000 USD with AMG body styling, gloss black exterior accents, matte black roof rails, a chrome diamond block grille and AMG 19” wheels. Although the package comes with 19” wheels, our test model has 20” AMG 5-twin-spoke wheels for $750 CAD/USD. Aluminum running boards are also available for $750 CAD/$650 USD. Standard features on the GLC include, heated power folding side mirrors, LED headlights and LED taillights, 19” wheels and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. 18” or 19” wheels are standard in the US. You can upgrade to the Intelligent Drive Package for $2,700 CAD/$1,700 USD for active blind spot monitoring and active rear-cross traffic alert, active lane keep assist, active lane change assist, active steering assist and active emergency stop assist. For fuel economy the GLC gets 11.3L/100km, 21 MPG city and 8.5L/100km, 28 MPG highway. The GLC can tow up to 3500 pounds.Mercedes-Benz offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles. Our test model has a silk beige Artico leather interior with brown ash wood trim and brushed aluminum. The cabin has an elegant feel to it with soft leather and very little hard plastic except in the places you would expect it on the lower doors. There are plenty of different leather colour combinations to choose from including, saddle brown, grey/black and cranberry red/black. The GLC comes standard with a 7” touchscreen with a touchpad controller, a 5.5” instrument cluster display and heated front seats. Our test model has the larger screens, a 12.3” digital instrument cluster found in the Technology Package for $1,900 CAD, a 10.25” touchscreen and panoramic sunroof in the Premium Package for $4,500 CAD, the foot activated tailgate and 64 colour LED ambient lighting found in the Premium Plus package for $2,100 CAD. There are a few more features you may want like a heated steering, it will cost you $250 CAD and heated rear seats for $550 CAD. It would be nice to see these features in at least one of the packages. As well, how about putting the larger screens in one package instead of two different ones?

Don't just say your don't like something, give reasons! I think the door mounted seat controls are great. Easy to get to without jamming your hand down the side of the seat. The shifter on the column is very easy to use. Especially compared to some of the competition and it frees up the center console for a cleaner design.

.. This guy has Porsche and thinks that they're the righteous way of doing things. Putting the seat controllers on the bottom of the seat is the dirt cheapest way of doing it. The by wire shift lever in the center column on Porsche and other cars wastes precious space. Frankly, it's stupid.

The GLC has that smooth flowing luxury ride and the X3 has that responsive performance ride. Both are excellent, just different. Thanks for all the excellent reviews.

Agreed. Here Zack just blathered on about a hundred years of heritage is what makes a Mercedes desirable and then contradicts himself by complaining that the seat control location haven't changed in 30 years! Zack, dude, have you not noticed that other car companies actually have tried to copy Mercedes in this area? I think these two are getting a little too opinionated as they get more successful.

I work at a Mercedes dealership in the states and I find it very interesting that in Canada you can get the AMG Line w/ Night Package and get a light interior. Also I HIGHLY recommend opting for the real leather interior I’ve seen so many lease return GLC300’s with ripped seats.

    • @chevalierkadosh2963
      @chevalierkadosh2963 Před 2 lety

I went to the dealer (in Canada) you can't get the AMG/ night package with light/beige interior (2021-2022). I don't know how they manage to get one. Maybe they got a "special edition" or they changed the body for the show. I've noted that the stearing is not AMG. Kinda false representation in this review in my point of view because it's not a "night package" per se...

Good to see you guys again! Looks like it finally cooled down in BC. I bet you guys are happy about that. It's not easy doing reviews when it's very hot out. The other day here in Montreal it was over 40 cel with the Humidex. I burnt my hand on the steering wheel when I got in to my car and my wife was wearing shorts and burnt her thighs on the leather seats.... Mercedes is not for everyone but for people that like Merc's and are brand conscious while being brand loyal will like this interior. However I wonder if the vehicle is still relevant given the cost....and reliability which Mercedes SUVs have been know to have issues...My friend's brand new Merc SUV was in the shop for 1 month 3 days after they took possession! There was a defective steering position sensor which they finally found; the vehicle's ECU would put it in limp mode with the Check Engine Light and a message to stop the vehicle right away and they had to get it towed by Merc. In fact they were 1 hour from home on the way back from dropping off a family member when it happened first and had to pay $$$ to take a taxi home as the tow truck operator would not drive them back and this was 5 months before the Covid lockdown and pandemic. It's fixed now however a month in the shop is unacceptable for a premium luxury vehicle like Merc.

I recently traded my A4 and thought I would just get another one. Surprisingly, I ended up with a C 300 and I am loving it. I test drove everything and I love your response to the question comparing the gv70 and the glc. Genesis makes a great vehicle but it is not a Mercedes. If one is buying a luxury vehicle, then they want that luxury feeling. The Genesis was great, but it only felt premium up against the Mercedes and A4. Regarding the packages, this allows you to personalize the vehicle a bit more as not everyone wants everything.

When I bought my 2021 RDX, the MB GLC300 was at the top of my list as an alternative. Ultimately, the configuration I wanted, with a beige interior, was just unavailable within a 500 mile radius and the RDX finally won out. I did not want the GLB/GLA, since to me, a true MB really starts from the GLC, since the GLC is the entry-point of MB vehicles that begin life as a RWD........the SH-AWD of the RDX does level the playing field a lot, in terms of a rear-biased feel, when on-throttle.

Thanks for a great review. I just purchased a CPO 2021 GLC 300 Coupe in Brilliant Blue with the black interior and AMG package. Your review was the best when doing my research. It would have been nice if you had addressed the differences with the coupe. Outside much sportier and the inside the storage is reduced and maybe the head room in the back. Also, a much smaller sunroof. I have had 5 BMWs in the last 23 years, primarily sport coupes, and this is the first Mercedes I have owned. BIG, BIG difference in the drive but the Mercedes is definitely more luxurious. I really enjoy all your reviews, thanks again.

This Mercedes Benz has aged exceptionally well. It looks great in that colour combination. It definitely appears expensive, but then again... it is. Though... I think that with this latest MBUX system, with such a stunning interior and the top tier badge value... it may be worthy of that price. But having recently looked at a parked G70 (sedan) ... whilst getting school supplies... I think that me and my cheque book would probably end up at a Genesis dealership... wherever they exist. Thanks for another excellent couple car review. Well done , again.

In the US, you can order almost all the options separately, Canada gets the big expensive packages.
Porsche has to be the absolute winner when it comes to options lists, I once specced a Macan S online to $150,000+.
I have a base GLC AMG 43 with a few minor extras, the vehicle is still premium IMO.
The seat controls on the door are the most logical solution, you aren't squeezing your hand/arm between the seat and the door scraping your watch along the way.

Hi guys, I love your reviews, but I have to disagree with some of the things this time. I am from Israel. I bought a new 2021 GLC about a year ago. It drives like a dream. I love that the seat nobs are on the door, making it very easy to use. Also the shift behind the wheel free space in the middle for the touchscreen. I tested a Q5 before buying the GLC and the GLC was much better to drive and the inside looks much better. The Q5 was ok but a little stiff while the GLC is smooth and fun and you feel like you are in your couch at home while driving it. For me it was the best buy and if I had to choose again I would choose the GLC.

I’d definitely want the climate comfort front seat package too… with heat AND ventilated front seats.
I also like the running boards as an option on this car.
I always get anxious when a model nears its end if I am considering buying one. Do you think it is better to await the new iteration of a model and see what it has to offer, or take advantage of a possibly better price on an outgoing one?
Unless the previous version has horrible comfort or amenities or performance … it is a tough question for me.

I’d never expect it to be anything like an S class but the ride is horrible, and I live in NC with very good roads. They switched me into a c class which was surprisingly smoother. I’m not quite sure who they are trying to market this too with such a rough ride.
Similar experience with the new X5. My mom had them when I was in high school and they were very smooth and handled well. New ones are insanely bumpy in comparison. Completely missing the mark and losing the ride/handling balance the Germans were always known for. Shame

Mercedes and their pkgs. You want item a well it on the $2100 x pkg but that includes one item that requires you to buy another pkg for $4000. So it really cost you $6100 for that. I like the controls on the door also. The one thing I would like is something the Europeans have been doing for a while is offering material choices for the seats outside of packages. You can have the most expensive model in the lineup with cloth seats or leather or pleather or Alcantara, it is your choice. Get into a car that is -20 and the seats are like rocks and take forever to heat up. Cloth heats up faster and doesn't burn you in the summer.

  • @mydevices768

I've been with the GLC 2017 since and had tried the 2020 also, it's the same. Suspension is the worst part on this car, it feels like a groceries cart whenever you drive on the slightest bad road (almost the same in the 2020) Transmission and throttle combo: is indeed super jerky when doing stop and go in either traffic jams or making quick stops.Just those 2 things are to the point that it's embarrassing to me whenever I have guests on board "my Mercedes" so I must be be extra careful about my driving to avoid those situations as much. Throttle is artificially slowed in an exaggerate way in comfort mode and very frustrating to me, I find it dangerous at times when you need to insert yourself in traffic from an intersection! this means you will never get the power you want when you need unless you almost floor the gas paddle and takes at least a good 2 secs. The sport mode is way better for that and I would keep it on at all times but 2 problems; 1) the RPM will raise by 1/2x1000more as long as sport mode is on 2) Even if you don't care about gas and pollution in sport you must enable back at every start of the engine. Sound system before 2020 is super bad! no bass, muffled sound no matter how you try to adjust it sound like ass, such insult at this price point, Kia as a way better sound system in my friend's sorento by far. Air suspension already leaking from visit to chalet, and no I have not used the car in any abusive way!! More very annoying things: after a while the center console cracks during driving as well as my driver's side door plastics. They did fixed it at the dealer by tightening the screws but it only lasted for a month! Then you also get the air-vent traps adjusting airflow inside the vents that started making noise every 20 seconds or so. For the 2020 I would also like to point out that they could have refreshed the outdated front grill design. I would also say that the paint is of a poor quality, not durable. the inner lower door steps will get rusty quickly. My recommandation: Don't buy! There are way better built and durable vehicles out there that will give you much better value for your $$ especially if you don't lease. And between the 2, as I also know BMWs, I believe the X3 is a much better car and experience all around.

I owned them all, but I really have to disagree what Zach said about if Genesis is Mercedes or not....no it's not but doesn't have to be...real difference is dealership service, Hyundai dealership service is NOT the same as the Mercedes dealer service. I used to go to FJ Mercedes in Newport Beach, except one small miscommunication, they are elite. From greeting to service..Price is fair too. Where BMW is more expensive to service than Mercedes. NOw the Hyundai dealership service, I don't even want to think about it. I call them about a windshield replacement for my GV70, they simply said we don't do it. Yes it's pretty horrible. So yes all these cars are essentially equal, you get more for your money in Genesis but less in dealership service, where you pay more for Mercedes you get great service and the name prestige.

Also the cargo space is not enough for a long road trip for a family of 3. We will return this car when the lease is over and go with other brands.Very disappointing car

I disagree with you completely regarding the placement of the seat controls and I prefer a column shift lever. I prefer to see all of the seat controllers available to me in plain sight. Porsche and other companies put the seat controllers on the seat because it's considerably cheaper not to run the wiring through the front firewall and back to the door panel. Taking up space to change a flyby wire controller for a shifter is frankly stupid. I much rather have critical storage space in the center column. Then some useless shift knob.
Don't get me started with Porsches' everything's a la carte and here's a dictionary filled with overpriced options and broken packages. On a Porsche Macan $3,000-$4,000 for those wheels you've got to be kidding me.

The basic problem I have with the mid-size German "luxury" CUVs is the overall value prop vis-a-vis let's say something like a top trim Hyundai Santa Fe. A tricked-out X3 or GLC is in the mid-60s USD range, while the top trim Santa Fe is mid-40s. What do I get for the additional 20?

Mercedes Benz has been losing to BMW and Audi in terms of performance, fit/finish and overall build quality for decades. To add to insult, Porsche came in to the game for the past 10-20 years with their Sedans and SUVs that destroy Mercedes in pretty much every way. As a result, it's lost the shine of its 3 pointed star, especially to its peers in Germany. It's rested on its laurels for far too long.
