      Yes , just that indeed because what divas must do is to honor that title and sing brilliantly their own repertory , anyone is called Diva these days , maybe she is but just in Glyndebourne,.To be called Diva you must have a unique vocal quality. Callas , Caballe , Tebaldi , Fleeming , Netrebko , Hard workers no lazy

    Sopranos have such a vast repertoire, ranging from ingénues to evil schemers and everything inbetween. AND STILL they extend to mezzo repertoire. Why? Just why? Repertoire is written for different voices for a reason. 😒

      Probably because it's so iconic and that so many people associate it with soprano singers. Also, look at her, she's having the time of her life 😂

      I get where you're coming from and to be fair, this performance was awful, but in general I think that is a very rigid way of thinking. I feel we are way too focused on voice classification. "back in the day" the voice classification system we use now didn't even exist and everything was written for particular singers, many of which had voices and vocal ranges that would completely defy modern classification. There are still plenty of singers like this but they are forced to try and fit themselves into a mold, and I personally feel that it is detrimental to the artist.

      @@JacquelineLanceTenor so back in the days they where better voices than today?

    • @JacquelineLanceTenor
      @JacquelineLanceTenor Před 7 měsíci

      @@maximillian6222 that's not what I said. Just that voice classification was much more broad and they did things differently in terms of writing roles for specific singers. I don't think we could really make a judgement on singers that were pre 1900 anyway since recording was still in its infancy, with the first opera singer being recorded in 1889. Without being able to hear those great singers from the 1800s we can't say that they were better than the singers we have now just based on writings about them.

    I hope unlike El-Khoury or Opolais mme De Niese is smart enough not to sing this piece on opera stage in full performance.

      @@bradycall1889 It's not her size or shape that is the problem but that badly tailored pink polyester dress. I guess she wanted to wear something Spanish-looking which the frills (kind of) attempt to evoke. However, she's not wearing a bra which would/should hold all the bits in. The dress has got a concealed bra but it does not fit properly, it cuts into her back skin and her sides and it makes the front of the dress look baggy, plus the cut in the armpit area is way too low exposing unsightly skin tags when she lifts her arms. The cameraman did not do her a favour. In any case, not a quality performance. Bizet butchered to bits.
