Feel the exact same way! Don’t like using gay cause i grew up in a world where it was used as something to be laughed at.
I never felt like it was „cool“ to be gay and others saw themselves as something better. (It was never really talked abt in media and if it was, it was something to make fun of a lot of the time.) I turned out never identifying with the term because of it.
Goes to say: the trauma you faced and the way terms are used in you surroundings effect how you perceive them and how you feel like using them later in life.

@ville__ It really isn’t. I cannot speak for everyone, though through my (and many others’) experience, it has never been a choice. I’m not gay, though I’ve been attracted to many different people throughout my life, regardless of their gender. For example, my first crush was my (at the time) best friend who was a girl (I’d like to add the context that during this time I was often seen as a girl also, despite feeling differently). We haven’t been in contact for a long time, though I still remember the times back in elementary school where I’d do anything to make her smile, sending butterflies into my stomach. And while those feelings are not caught by choice, I suppose being in a relationship with someone of the same gender is.
TLDR, the feelings caught are not by choice, though I guess you can say that willingly dating someone despite being the same gender is an option.
(Just want to add rq that if I sound rude in this reply, I don’t mean to. I’m just sharing my thoughts and such)

I identify as queer because figuring things out in detail is mind melting. I just know i am the way i am and dont feel the need to look deeper? But im not out to my parents, since my mum still strongly believes that queer is a bad word. When i say it in passing she just goes 'oh, dont use that awful word.' I get that in her generation it wasnt used nicely, but things change 🫡

    It's not my trauma.

My moms preferred queer because of the common protest chant: "We're here, we're queer! Get used to it!"
And it kinda just stuck with all us kids. So even our cis het sibs are queer because they are aggressive allies and wear whatever they want because clothes have no gender so people often assume they're not cis or het. I wanna say they only correct that notion when someone is the same gender asks them out. It's adorable because they're always so flattered. My brother once sighed and said he wished he was gay because the guy that asked him out was a new kid in the area that he'd already considered a great friend. But he just didn't think of him like that and whined that is that friend was a girl, he'd probably be drooling over a 'chick that was into all the same things he was' the way his buddy was.
    They're still friends btw

A part of me hopes that one day we'll have a society where people can be like (example)
Cisgender male just gets a boyfriend and introduces him to friends & family without "coming out" or "labels" because no one expected him to like women just because he's male.
This would go all ways for all identities, but things would be a lot more casual & chill rather such a big deal as they are right now (obviously this is in an accepting society)

this is a concept i love so much. but sadly it only exists in extremely open minded families and places, where the child already knows the parents don't need them to come out, and will accept them regardless of who they are and who they love. i often feel like gender and sexuality is too culturally integrated into who a person is. i'm a bisexual trans man, but i'm still the same person as i was when i was a 12 year old, still wondering whether the gender i was assigned is the right thing for me, just matured into who i was always meant to be.

This is what I hope for the future as well. I think to get there though, more and more of us need to keep coming out publicly - but only those who feel comfortable and safe doing so of course!
The more people who can say “I know someone who is queer and they’re ok”, the more the collective thinking of our societies will change.
We need numbers. With numbers comes greater visibility, understanding, and acceptance. And with that comes greater influence and power to change legislation and increase freedoms.
And here’s the thing. Bisexuals and unlabelled folks in particular could be instrumental in bringing about this change. Statistically, we far outnumber gays, lesbians, trans, etc. combined. Yet we tend to be far more closeted. Many of us are in straight-facing relationships, enjoying the privileges of passing in a cis-het world. If we started a grass-roots effort to encourage and support bisexuals and unlabelled people to come out, I think we would be amazed at how quickly queerness would be normalized.
We would be well on our way to a world where labels and coming out are a thing of the past.

I love this, this is my thoughts exactly, label or don’t label urself as whatever u want and use whatever labels in whatever as long as they are correct and sincere usages in whatever way u want, I identify as queer to myself and to friends, but when i come out to people I generally say bisexual just because its a readily understandable term, still too much for my Christo-loony family to accept me but at least it was clear cut and explained just by the use of one word. Queer has been used as a word among others to insult me in my childhood originating community but me using it in a positive and voluntary way has disarmed it for me, i still get called a f-slur but i feel like that word is almost comically overused at this point that some of its potency has been lost through that.

A loved one of mine is an elderly LGBTQIA community member who laments that "gay" became the acceptable term and wishes that "homo" had been chosen instead.
'Homo' is short for homosexual which is not a bad word and matches with "hetero" and "bi".
"Gay" to Frederic's point was and is a slur, right up there with "funny" "silly" "skippy" (all real btw).
But also to Frederic's point, langauge is fluid, much like sexuality and gender identity.

Queer is the only label that has stayed with me the entire time I've been questioning my gender identity and sexuality. No matter where I fall on the spectrums between ace & allo or cis & trans or homo & hetero, I *am* Queer. I am not cis or straight & this much I know *for sure*.
As for specifics? I'm happy that those who've been searching for the correct labels have found them. I'm happy that we have more words in our vocabulary to describe to others our internal experiences and our attractions. Back when everyone was first having crushes on others & figuring out their personalities and attractions & some folks were (bravely) coming out in high school... I didn't even know that nonbinary was a thing, let alone all the other labels that have come into existence. That isn’t to say it didn't already exist. I mean, I existed in my weird "not like other xyz", hating the overly gendered colors and clothing pieces that I was sometimes forced to wear and the weirdness I felt saying I was my agab. But the terms weren’t there to describe that feeling to everyone else around us, at least, not that I knew of. So it's nice that we *have* them now. Still, that doesn't mean anyone has to utilize them if they don’t want to or has to stick to one that they chose previously if they’ve found a new one that fits better. Labels are changeable, just as much as our genders and sexuality are fluid.
Thankfully, Queer exists as an umbrella term because while there are some that fit *more* than others, none of them feel like me. I guess the closest would be gendervoid but even then it feels... *limiting*. Like a box I have to fill. So.

This is EXACTLY my experience w the term queer as well. I’ve been through so many labels and they’ve all felt too restrictive and just not right for me. I feel like I’m constantly changing and growing and my interests and passions take me all over the place, and oftentimes my identity kind of goes along for the ride as well. Using the term Queer, it feels like it goes beyond sexuality and gender identity, it just encapsulates me and how I see myself and interact with the world. Everything I do is queer because I am queer. It lets me change and grow and still feel and know that I’m being true to myself. Idk, it’s just a very freeing word, it feels less like a label and more just like, a descriptor, if that makes any sense at all? Idk.
Also bonus points because the Queer flag is gorgeous

Thanks for talking about this! I never really found a label that I really liked and queer always felt the most like me. I do get a lot of shit from other people in the community for it so Im glad you are explaining this

i’m more comfortable just saying i’m bi now, but i used to say bi/queer. bc i was in a constant state of feeling like i needed to validate myself due to the biphobia i saw online, i felt like queer have me more breathing room! now i just say im a queer person, and i’m good with saying bi is my sexuality specifically. i love that queer has been reclaimed.
i’m so glad you said that fruity and zesty are used as slurs. i feel like young kids online have gotten too comfortable using them to describe someone 😭

Now there are many labels for it
    And they are all amazing

“Queer” was definitely a slur along with “gay” where I’m from, but I use both terms and I use queer all the time as an umbrella term for myself or for the community in general. I’d say it’s definitely a reclaimed term at this point

    1) Your look is gorgeous😍 2) I identify as queer, because I like that this word is all-encompassing, and even if I can also identify as biromantic ace, I don't necessarily want to go into specifics, and I am not necessarily feeling the same day to day. What I definitely know is that I'm not heterosexual, so queer fits perfectly for me personally.

Queer also covers people who aren’t allosexual, so if someone is cis and straight, but they’re asexual, then they’re still queer.

also ur label is allowed to not necessarily be accurate if that makes sense
example: i use the terms biromantic and demiaroace however, some more accurate terms would be panromantic and grey-aroace but i dont like the assumptions that people make abt my sexuality with those terms and i prefer the terms i use

    Queer squad!!!
I also personally feel like queer is both an identity…and a philosophy almost? Like yeah, sexuality isn’t a choice, gender isn’t a choice, but to me *queer* is about the *choice* to embrace the outside of the norm.
To me, it’s looking the “gay people just want to be normal and live a normal life!” rhetoric in the eyes and saying, “yes, and for those people, I hope they get to live the life they want. But my fight does not end there. My fight is for the right of people who have NO DESIRE (or perhaps no ability) to live inside the norm to have the right to live their lives happily in peace.” Being queer to me is about wanting to do away with the idea that one’s identity must fit prescriptive factors that can be generalized to be understood by others in order to be valid. I love the “label” queer with how free it is. I didn’t leave one community that told me how I should be who I am only to find ANOTHER community to tell me who to be (now with the New and Improved Girlkissing update!!). I just want to be free of those expectations and queer gave that to me 🥰
    Lots of love 💕

I refer to myself as queer because I'm not one to get hung up on small things like labels. I'm allowed to like whoever I want and go by whatever I want, and I shouldn't have to go into extreme detail just for someone to understand that. As long as it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone, do whatever you want! 🫶🏽

I am so on board with this! I myself have a very complicated relationship with my gender and sexuality that is. SO difficult to explain the nuances of to anyone who isnt as genderweird or mspec as me, so i default to using queer because its just easier. Id rather spend my time socializing and talking about things i love over the nuances of what my gender is

"I'd rather just be not normal"
    Same, but also,
What *is* normal but a standard that restricts individuality? Be you. There is no normal. No one tries to be not normal, people try to be normal, and it's a goalpost that is moved on every axis wherever you almost reach it. But if you take your attention off that goalpost, there is no goalpost to be seen. It has no real meaning, therefore it doesn't exist. The goal is to live as authentically as possible, and understand what you mean to yourself.

i have my very specific labels and if i’m speaking that in depth i’ll use them but it’s way quicker and easier to say i’m queer than to talk about my gender non conforming trans male asexual panromantic self, especially if we’re talking specifics of transition and that sort of thing. also because i appear to be a cishet man a lot of the time.
