    ive seen alot of Bcam cars that ran freakishly good with GT40 irons and cobra/explorer intakes.beings that GT40 heads peak flow of around 195CFM comes in at around .450lift and stays consistant 195cfm to .500 lift the B cam falls on the higher side of these peak flow numbers for this particular head so it would stand to reason this would be a very nice power making cam for the GT40 head and intake family.The problem i see with the trick flow heads and this cam is that trick flows peak flow numbers come in at substantially higher lift and most likely are soggy down low with this cam due to lack of intake velocity stocl heads are designed for HIGH airflow velocity at low RPM with thier smaller port design thats why 5.0HO stock were so darn punchy just off idle the stock E7 heads were small and very high veliocity thus making butt loads of low speed torque but fall off at anything over 4500-5000.when choosing a cam look at your heads flow numbers and where in the lift range they flow best to choose your cam. if a GT40 head peaks out at 195CFM at .500 lift max then a .525 lift cam is not gonna do a thing other than beat the crap out of valve springs. if you run a Bcam with GT40 heads and either a cobra explorer or GT40 tubular intake with a 70mm TB 3.73-4.10 gears and 5 speed i guarantee you will not be disappointed also 24-30LB injectors and tune the Bcam will deliver i promise the stock E7 heads are to small for this cam and the trick flow heads are to big GT40s are about perfect for this camshaft

    I love my Anderson N-41 cam, and am glad I didn't go with the B303. I was lucky enough to read a post in a thread about a guy that did the same thing. He had a fox, iron e7 heads, 24lb injectors and an intake (I wanna say it was a ported Explorer intake). After the B303 he was not happy. He ended up ordering a custom grind camshaft among other things in the end. But after I read that, I just had a feeling I didn't want to be another guy with a B303 fox. I know it's not the most extreme cam, but the N-41 works great with my setup.
    For reference I have:
    Original factory block
    Anderson N-41 (Item #AFM-N41 MPN# N41) from LMR
    Original factory pistons (did not need to be notched for clearance)
    AFR 185cc heads (AFR1492 is how they are listed on the cj site, but they are 60cc combustion chamber 70cc exhaust, intake valve 2.020 and exhaust 1.600) from cjponyparts
    ARP head bolts (HBK3701 on cjponypoarts, 154-3701 from ARP) from cjponyparts
    Comp Cams hardened pushrods (Item 30151 MPN# 7826-16 ) from AmericanMuscle
    Ford Racing hydraulic rollers (Item 50441 MPN# M-6500-R302H) from AmericanMuscle
    Edelbrock Victor 5.0 intake manifold (EDL2945) from cjponyparts
    SR Performance 75mm throttle body (Item 41101 MPN# 41101) from AmericanMuscle
    SR Performance 75mm EGR spacer (Item 41102 MPN# 41102) from AmericanMuscle
    SR Performance cold air intake (Item 41095 MPN# 41095, pulling air from the fender) from AmericanMuscle
    Pro-M 75mm Mass Air Meter (MAM869350-V) calibrated by Pro-M from cjponyparts
    30lb ACCEL fuel injectors (INJ30) from cjponyparts
    Ford Motorsport timing chain set (M-6268-B302) from cjponyparts
    Edelbrock water pump (not sure on the number but I think it's SKU: 8045) from Edelbrock
    I'm sure I'm missing some stuff, but I hope this helps someone out there.

    Just out of High School I ran a Fox Body with Dart 2.02 1.60 iron heads Edelbrock performer intake, 24lb injectors, running the old SVO extender chip on the computer, with a MotorSport X-Cam. On a 200 NOS shot the car was a beast. At idle Harley Davidson guys would break there necks trying to get a 2nd & 3rd look. But that car was a limp dog down low. But to be honest I would probably trade my 2003 Cobra even to have my 1988 GT back.

    What about the E cam

  • @alanb2845
    @alanb2845 Před 5 lety +2

    The problem is that the alphabet cams are all single pattern cams. They have the same amount of duration for each valve. When doing research for my engine build, it seemed as if all the strong running mild 5.0 motors had dual pattern cams. Generally the fords perform much better with about ten more degrees of duration on the exhaust side to help the small exhaust ports. Additionally, the longer exhaust duration helps to pull in the incoming intake charge. They’re especially benefitted with longtube headers as well. I did a whole explorer junkyard 331 build that pulls incredibly well. Never had it on the dyno. I spent a couple days porting and polishing the heads. I also port matched the lower and straightened out some of the runners. Gt40p heads aren’t the best choice for all out power, but I was looking for a strong torque motor that would pull to 6k which it does without falling off. I run an Anderson n41 which is an amazing cam. It pulls very hard above 2000. Paired with 10.5:1 compression and she’s a mean little motor

    Just watched this vid again and realized that the yellow fox body doesn’t even sound like a b303 cam. Clearly the timing was wrong or the cam wasn’t installed properly with a degree wheel. That does not sound like a b303 whatsoever.

      @GrandTouringConcepts  Před 3 lety

      We built that engine from the ground up, and not only was it a genuine B303 cam, it was set up properly and degreed during assembly. The sound is probably more an effect of the crummy video camera (filmed circa 2008) and a speed density PCM. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Darren

      It did certainly stand out in the crowd at idle, that is for sure. In Holdener's book he lists it in quite a few combinations. For very quick reference (single data point) on a GT40 build with extrude hone Dart Windsor heads, it the X303 made 341 HP peak as a comparison, that engine with a stock cam made 320, and the X303 nearly matched the Lunati 284/292 cam for average as well as peak.

    I’m one of the rarities. Though I wouldn’t go B303 today (my coupe has a stage 1 Trick Flow), I did enjoy the B303 in my coupe back in 1993. My coupe went 8.58 in the 8th at 79 mph, with ONLY a B303 cam, Hurst short throw shifter, Mickey Thompson Sportsman street tires, 3:55 gears, Motorsport H-pipe and Borla mufflers (2.25). Bone stock air meter, T/B, intake and heads. The reason for the combination was I didn’t have much money and a buddy took his B cam out for an X cam and gave it to me. So, I put it in. I was lucky I guess.

    • @GrandTouringConcepts
      @GrandTouringConcepts  Před 6 lety +5

      I would love to give you a dead-on recommendation but, this is not a super straightforward kind of thing. Cams are specific to combinations, and honestly, anyone that gives a cam suggestion without knowing the full combo and use, is giving poor advice. That all said, I would recommend looking at a custom cam from any of the popular grinders. They will ask a series of questions about your exact combo, and intended usage. If a custom cam is outside the price range for a build, I would contact any of the big name manufacturers for their best pick, they will ask the same questions a custom grinder will to determine the best fit. One thing I must really stress when it comes to high-performance camshafts is springs and lifters. These are so often overlooked, and are somewhat expensive, but any good cam will give mediocre performance if the springs are not right, or the lifters are tired. For reference, in my experience stock valve springs were unsuitable to deal with a stock cam, (they float the valves before redline) and stock lifters began to collapse after 2 years of pushing a stock cam against a good spring. My best advice is to pick a cam matched to your combo and to not forget to consider new lifters and springs a mandatory item. Anything less and a guy is best suited to explore other power production options. Hopefully this helps. - Darren

There is a bit of power left on the table, and I would like to add some more lift to the exhaust side of the pattern, but the good street manners and driveability are very hard to give up. To answer your question the car made 360 hp and 360 tq at 9 psi on a MD600 with the eddy brake loaded, this makes dynojet comparison numbers very difficult, maybe about ~ 395 rwhp dynojet (very rough estimate) with 11 psi of boost power and torque moved up to a tick past 380 on the MD600. (~418 Dynojet) there are a bunch of considerations (not all positive) with a KB which I have to break out into a separate video in the spring. - Darren

      That is a Kenne Bell 2.2L twin screw supercharger, they are still available from Kenne Bell directly, or on the used market periodically. Expect to see a full break out video on this blower in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting! - Darren

    Never tried a letter cam, as i read how “outdated” the tech was.
    But my buddy has a budget 351w im helping him build and im curious to how a Z303 will perform ? 🤔

      Z303???? No such cam..X303 which requires flycut or flycutting pistons..

    What is a good cam for my basically stock 94 5.0 with cold air intake , headers exhaust and 4:10 gears?????

    • @GrandTouringConcepts
      @GrandTouringConcepts  Před 5 lety

      Honestly if you have the stock heads and intake you are best served by a stock camshaft. The factory combo really doesn't give you much benefit with a cam swap for the price and work involved for a cam swap and nearly mandatory valve spring upgrade. Prioritize a set of heads first. - Darren

      I'd do springs, 1.7 rollers, and advance the cam 4*. Start with 6* then the chain will stretch.
      Watch the piston clearance.

    So I have a auto 95 gt. When it is completely cold when I start it (I let the fuel pump cycle) it runs really rough for a second then revs as it normally would warm However some times I have to tap the gas to get it to idle up and clear up. It seems as it has a slight miss fire almost barely noticeable. It idles just above 1k like a hair. And every once in a blue moon will randomly die idling or going from reverse to drive. Seems like it has more power at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle than 3/4 or full throttle. It has a new fuel filter so don't think that has anything to do with it. I'm leaning towards the distributor. Any opinions? I'd be more than happy to make a video on it if required.

      Hello and thanks for your comment, as you may know it is very difficult to do diagnosis over the web, but your issue sounds very similar to my own experiences with a bad dizzy. It is not a certain conclusion but it might put you on the right track to look there. Please keep us posted and thanks for watching! -Darren

      Grand Touring Concepts Update the car still acts the same did the distributor cap and rotor plug wires and ignition coil no change! Gonna try spark plugs next. If that don't fix it I'm going to go out on a limb and say injectors.

      What i mean is that they were clogged .They only have 96k on them but the injector components are about 24 years old so thats why i rebuilt them using a rebuild kit from The Injector Shop on ebay.Also clean out your throttle body, maf sensor and iat sensor and most of all you IAC valve.All these things are not expensive to do and not vert much time consuming.

      Victor G can't see your other comment but I did clean mass air flow sensor and a new air intake temp sensor. I just broke down yesterday. I am not exactly sure what happened but I'm pretty sure it's my cats. The only 2 I got left. And smoke was coming off my passenger side cat when I broke down so... Idk imma hollow them out Friday can't pay 200 to cut them out

    30 year old tech. Period.
    Damn hard to beat the stock cam on the street.
    Pop in 1.7 rollers and the exhaust and later heads and Explorer intake.
    If you're desperate, call Comp, etc and stay conservative.
