To me as an Aussie, Gallipoli means maturity of Australia. Gallipoli gives us pride and sorrow, a lasting resentment to Britain (not the British) and a respect of the Turks. We realised we were no longer a colony but a nation, the Crown would throw us to the wolves if we let them. I think it shows a lot about how we feel about NZ, brothers raised together.
I have fond memories of sitting in front of the fire while my great grandfather talked about his time in Belgium, France and of course Gallipoli. He was a brilliant storyteller, able to convey himself in such a way that by the end of his tales I'd usually blink and look around confused at the fact that I was in a cosy living room as opposed to holding a trench line under artillery fire or caught up in the middle of a bayonet charge as the vivid world he crafted slowly melted away and reality asserted himself once more

The song " And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle is about a soldier landing at Suvla.

You really gotta hand it to the innovations of the Anzacs, especially during the evacuation.
As the last people were evacuating, they had set up a way for them to keep firing the guns without anyone there. They filled ammo cans with water with a drip hole. The water would then fill a small vessel tied to the trigger of a gun, and when it reaches certain weight, it would pull the trigger, giving the impression that the defences were still manned.
As an Aussie 🇦🇺 myself, desperation breeds innovation, especially in wartime.
Although having a plane crash in your backyard during the evacuation, doesn’t help matters much.
An observation aircraft was critically damaged and put down right in the middle of their evacuation efforts, this compound of the problem. Now they had to figure out how to destroy the aircraft and get the pilot out at the same time they were evacuating without the Turks finding out. They succeeded, surprisingly enough, and the Turks did not know that the Anzacs were evacuating till after they were gone.

The commander Mustafa Kemal who said that quote “Mothers wipe your tears…” became founder of the Turkish Republic after WW1. That wasnt said during the documentary.
