Amazing and heartfelt, with an upcoming election and a narrow world view as its central platform, the British people need to remember how the world views them and the respect for fairness and sense of justice they command across our globe. It's no wonder then that people flock there in times of crisis, for they know they will get a fair hearing. Mr Ahmed, thank you for reminding us of what Britain is and more importantly capable of with true 'representation.'

I had the privilege of conversing with Riz once, 20 years ago. One of the most alert, alive, enthusiastic humans I've ever come across. I was not surprised to see him rise into the Hollywood A list alongside his more privileged British peers such as Felicity Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch. And he's done it all without losing his roots as a conscious rapper and a wicked new album out this year. Respect.

He is a great speaker. The main idea of his speech is to assept muslims and asians the same way as we assept european people. His speech is gentle but very expressive, he worries a lot about this problem.. And he makes me believe him. He is nice and intelligent, I like him)

One of the most brilliant, impassioned, eloquent, reasoned speeches I have ever heard. I was absolutely enthralled for these 23 minutes watching him capture the importance of representation so adroitly. I'm so grateful that he uses his voice and his position in such a positive way.

@@salemgelidi3266 rather than have diversity as a dressing or a thing that's just added on the top after having created something, we should have proper representation in media. Representation that speaks to us, that we can relate to. Not only that, but also a varied form of representation. He's not just advocating for let's say the story of an immigrant or a refugee or someone along those lines. He's asking the media to represent the minorities in different ways as well. If i say there's a Western film about a businessperson who's been kidnapped by aliens and must break free to save humanity (poor example I know), you most probably will imagine a white guy here. But that can easily be someone with a different descent in that role. My example is very basic and doesn't capture much of his proposition but you can apply it to various aspects of representation.

@@salemgelidi3266 it helps us feel that we belong. The population is growing diverse and even if it were merely a tiny minority, it would still be important. To see characters in media who look like us, who have had the same experiences as us, they creates a sense of belonging. That we are accepted enough that we are made visible in the media. This has been articulated much better by many other people, you can Google the importance of representation to get a deeper understanding. The lack of representation, or even constant misrepresentation, feels alienating. I would encourage you to search for the importance of representation, the others use entire article spaces to discuss this.
Here I am, poking around CZcams, watching millions of people, worldwide, are protesting for Black Lives Matter, and I stumbled upon this speech given by Riz Ahmed ... 4 years ago? It was prescient.
Go back even further, look at what CLR James, MLK, Malcolm X, other activists from that era in the UK and US said... The issues have not been solved because bigotry is big business. We've had decades of people fighting for change and other people fighting back against positive change. I'm just glad we have intelligent and talented people like Riz fighting for that change, that we have the energy of BLM, or the Kill the Bill protests, getting young people to care about what goes on in the world around them

Incredible speech Riz I commend you on your dedication to a very important issue. I absolutely agree we have to tell the true story of our diverse community within Britain and recognise the history of Britain has been diverse from its genesis.
7:25 I'm not British Pakistani but I can relate to this. I'm half Irish Traveller, half Romani, and the first time I ever saw either of those groups portrayed as smart, human protagonists, rather than a highly stereotyped joke or a secondary antagonist group that is so dehumanised they essentially become fauna... Was the Shelby family in Peaky Blinders.
I was I think 23 when I first watched it, and it was the first time I saw a Romani or Traveler character who... Actually had effort put into them? Were actually written to be a human being with emotions and motivations and a narrative arc, rather than just having their entire ethnicity and culture used as a MacGuffin to advance the story of a White British man, as either an obstacle to overcome or (good example here, Snatch, love that film but it has *issues*) a sorta whimsical yet generally dodgy character who acts as an ally who then swindles the protagonist?
I had gone 23 years without seeing a positive portrayal of my people on television, with tv rarely mentioning us but when it does, it's always in a way that id designed to demonise us for an agenda
So seeing Tommy Shelby, a badass protagonist, an independent, morally complex antihero who is written to be understandable, relatable in some ways, human... It made me cry tears of joy
Isn't Tommy Shelby a career criminal? People like him should be imprisoned, not romanticised.

My thing with Tommy is that it was the first time I saw a traveller on TV who was smart, tough, and whose character clearly had a lot of thought put into it. He wasn't a McGuffin for a non traveller protagonist, he wasn't a one dimensional joke, he was a human being, a fleshed out, fully formed man, whose motivations are understandable, and who you can judge fully
It's genuinely difficult finding Traveller characters on TV who are actually depicted as... Full blown, complex people, with emotions and dreams and skills and flaws and a story, ya know?
A character who is on a level playing field with the non Traveller characters, that's what is so rare, that's what Tommy Shelby is, and that's what meant so much to me

Mate just wondering why you voted for Brexit? Not saying you shouldn't have, I voted Remain but only narrowly because I felt pressured into it by left-wing people in Oxford, where I live... my partner-other half is Indian, from Kolkata, she has had massive trouble trying to get ILR despite living in and working hard in the UK for 10 years (now she has got ILR), but before that we went to an immigration hearing where they said she had to go back to Kolkata because we could continue our relationship over WhatsApp (that was their argument). In my opinion there was a pro-EU influence on the immigration lawyers which made it more difficult for my partner, who is very hard-working, very qualified and has no criminal record, to get leave to remain, whilst other people from within the EU got leave to remain with no skills and sometimes with criminal records.
