Blacksmithing - Forging a skillet / frying pan

- In this video I show how I make a skillet or frying pan, whatever you like to call it. This is by no means THE way to make a pan, I just used tools and techniques available to me at the moment.
I want to give a special thanks to Denis Frechette who opened my eyes when it comes to techniques to raise edges on a pan or vessel. Check out his channel here - / @df-intheshop330

I love the way this panned out.
😠
You can really see the skillet took to make it.
Ha Ha yes.............@@jonesy3million26
Yeah, I was worried at first, but at around 13:40 I realised he had a handle on it.
Oh the irony.
This has to be the MOST amazing forging video I’ve ever watched, I would be the first to buy that pan if I could afford it. Thank you for a wonderful video.
Wow, thank you!
No doubt.. incredible piece of work..
Wiem w którym miejscu pęknie 😢
The many skillet designs I have seen dont include a threaded wood handle that could work itself loose. Not sure this could be labeled an heirloom piece
@@kimberly1567Unless the wood cracks or the threading strips, I don't see how it would ever be an issue- simply snug it up as necessary if it ever worked loose.
I appreciate that you include the cleanup and your workshop doesn’t just magically get cleaned
I believe that is the 1st $9,700.00 skillet I have ever seen! Absolutely amazing craftsmanship!
Where is price listed ?
Speaking as a cook, I can say anyone would be proud to have that skillet in their kitchen. Beautiful work.
Much appreciated, thank you!!
@@torbjornahman I have to agree! What a masterpiece!
@@torbjornahman Can you tell us it's rusted ??
Just think that pan is going to get better as it ages. I use cast iron a lot as well.
@@torbjornahman how much would you charge to make another? :P
That is one of the most impressive smithing projects I have seen. No where to hide and no option to turn a mistake into a feature. Just clean, functional design. Beautiful work.
I am a huge fan of cast iron cookware, but that is nothing short of the most fantastic, most beautiful fry pan I have ever seen in my life. The skill and love of art that went into that piece of art was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Fantastic work.
Wow, thank you so much!
This isn't cast iron, it's carbon steel.
@@julesl6910 how can you tell?
@@rhys6165 Cast iron is cast in sand. This is high carbon steel, which is why he seasoned it.
@@julesl6910 sorry, what I ment is how can you tell that it is carbon steel and not wrought iron? I have 2 wrought iron pans and they are a similar thickness to this.
Beautiful video. There’s nothing better than watching a master do what they do.
(Also, love the shirt!)
Never thought I would enjoy watching someone forge a skillet. Yet here I am. A wonderful piece of artwork that will feed the soul. Great job.
Cool, thanks!
And the stomach😋
@@terrycollins3954 LOL, good one! Underrated : )
@@terrycollins3954 This made my day 😆
Your skills at moving metal at the anvil are truly amazing. Having some time at an anvil staring at mangled hunks of steel isn't required to enjoy the content, but it sure helps to appreciate the level of your expertise. Hephaestus would be impressed.
Thanks!
@@torbjornahman You know the drill: it's okay as long as nobody press charges.
Thanks God, master builder is still around today to share his craft 🙏
I think it's fair to say this could possibly be the only frying pan on the planet made in this way and I love it. Great video!
Probably! Thanks
Damn Dude, you never fail to deliver, that is one awesome skillet. Can't imagine how much pride you must get each and every day when you look around your house/property and see all the things you've created with your own hands and skill that are functional, beautiful pieces of art. You really do highlight the need for skilled craftsmen and people making the things they need.
Wow, thank you for the kind words!!
Hiifriend 😊😊👍
A pan that will last multiple lifetimes, you can't buy quality like this 👌
Most metal pans dont break as they are made of metal
@@hondsvod the metal they are made out of in stores is generally crap metal or pot metal and they do break usually around the handle area. More like tear than break but either way, they can have pretty serious failures. And it's more about warping and the coatings wearing off that most store bought pans have that ruins them
Until someone with no mind of maintenance destroys it
@@hondsvod No, pans like this will last forever. Store bought pans have a non stick coating, once that is gone they're next to useless
@@mrcaboosevg6089 sorry bro, but there are stainless steel pans exist
Beautiful piece of functional art!
My family would put that in the dishwasher the second I turned around.
For the benefit of anyone under 40, this is what hard work looks like.
Would love to see bacon and eggs cooked in such a masterpieces
The man who produces whatever the house needs with a great deal of effort for the usage for eternity! Congrats and thanks for sharing Dear Åhman.
I dream of getting away from home for the weekend and locking myself in a workshop with this guy, working on such wonders...
Build your own shop and enjoy the craft 😊
Honestly man you can do it very cheap. Don't limit yourself
WOW. Amazing, from rivet to complex shapes. Great teacher. No words. Just do.
Man, that is absolutely gorgeous. It's legitimate art at this point.
Looks like a pan that I would always want to use; perfect size, beautiful handle, excellent craftsmanship...It honestly seems perfect
😊😊👍👍
Best channel on the Tube.
No talking, no absurd music, just working, just enough time warp to still be able to get what's going on, and the measurements are useful too. 👍 😎
Beautiful work as always Torbjorn! When we first moved into our place we had a blizzard and I went out to my shop to discover all of my tools under about 2ft of snow. Needless to say I made sure to get it nice and sealed up now so that doesn't happen again! Thank you for sharing your work!
What a great video, the great thing about carbon steel skillets is once seasoned it becomes a nonstick pan without the teflon, eggs slide around as if they were on top of ball bearings. It's comparable to cast iron for searing but with 1/2 the weight. Absolutely beautiful.
"It's comparable to cast iron for searing but with 1/2 the weight."
Mild steel is a little heavier than typical cast iron (7.85 g/cm3 vs. 7.3 g/cm3). The reason that steel skillets are usually lighter than cast iron ones is because they are much thinner-walled. That also means they aren't comparable to cast iron for searing, because less mass means less heat retention.
However, the steel pan that this guy made is almost certainly as heavy as, or heavier than, a typical cast iron skillet of the same diameter. He started with 6mm thick steel. A typical steel skillet only has a [uniform] wall thickness of 2mm. A typical cast iron skillet has varying wall thickness of about 3mm on the sides to about 5mm on the bottom, which is pretty close to how this guy's skillet turned out.
Yeah but most people do NOT know how cook with one. I'd love to have this pan but I'd never let my wife or kids use it.
I hope people appreciate how many different blacksmithing skills went into this piece. As mentioned, your shrinking method would make a great tutorial in itsself. Nice work on an heirloom piece. Keep them coming!
Torbjörn is no longer dreaming of a white Christmas. Hope it's a great one. Thanks for another beautiful video. 🎅🎅
Happy holidays! :)
Fantastic video.
Congrats
To get up at 3 am after a rough dream and watch this good humored and masterly piece of work- yet again- gets me into a positive headspace. Mate, it can't get better than this one... can it? John W. Murrumbateman, Australia

@Torbjörn Åhman my pleasure. I watch many blacksmiths on CZcams but yours is one of 3 that I look forward to seeing new content for and find myself watching your old content as well as an amateur hobbyist blacksmith.
I love it when a pan comes thru... okay, plan. (I'd purchase one!)
Absolutely a piece of brilliant craftmanship! Very well done would love to have a skillet like this !
Sometimes I forget how awesome it is that blacksmiths just make their own tools to get a job done
That is a downright piece of art Torbjörn, just wonderful. I recently bought several French carbon steel frying pans, but man, this is on a completely different level…
Oh very kind, thank you!!
Incredibly beautiful craftsmanship. I would be very honoured to own such a work of art. Thank you for sharing the process!
Great video. I haven’t watched your videos since I moved to the Ozark mountains 2 years ago. As usual, it was fantastic. I will be watching again now that we are settled in at our new property. Thank you.
Beautiful work! Also, the blowtorch method of seasoning seems much less annoying than the oven method. ;)

Wow.. Amazing, yet again. Absolutely loved this project. Honestly we are running out of superlative’s to describe your art. Thank you for sharing it with us. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
So very kind, thanks!!
Hello Hello From Canada!!! Thank you for sharing this amazing creation with us. Your craftsmanship and attention to details is so wonderful to see, because we live now in a world of ""stamped out and cheaply made"", but what you make is like art. I work with wood to create carvings, cabinets and furniture, but I haven't had a chance to work with and learn from a blacksmith yet. Maybe one day I will have that chance, but until then I will enjoy watching your channel to keep that hope alive and gain inspiration for the future. I wish you good fortune in 2023. I also hope you and all those near or dear to you, stay as healthy and happy as possible.
Thank you!!
As someone who has crafted and forged quite a few things I am very proud of, I watch this video in awe of the masterful and seemingly effortless level of quality put forth. Bravo!

The shrinking process for the rim is so cool. I would love to see a comparison for how thick it was after grinding vs after the pan was completed. From the video it looked like it almost became as thick as the original sheet was.
It's the perfect tutorial on shrinking. Honestly, I've not seen better and he didn't even have to talk to explain what he was doing.
Thanks. I think the thickness is about the same as just ground because you loose some material to scale with repeated heating like this.
This is why I know I'm subbed in the right place, I scrolled down to ask this exact question ha Great minds I guess ha
The amount of skill in each aspect that went into making this was absolutely amazing, just subscribed...Fantastic work!

Fantastic job, that would soon turn into my favorite skillet. As always, you take an everyday project to the next level, completing it in fine detail. You Sir, are the epitome of a true craftsman!
Thank you very much!
A beautiful piece. You have mastery in your hands. You have been blessed. My grandfather used to black smith. When he used to make those, he also used square steel for the pot. I used to watch him. I was younger then, and did not take the opportunity to learn from him. That is one beautiful pan. The wood is tremendous. Good figuire. A well done piece of art.
I see people on Facebook complaining about your work, probably because you don't only make knives and axes, but I think our work is more interesting because of that. Your work is more representative of what the village blacksmiths did for many centuries, which was to make everything from nails to household and agricultural tools.
