I Rode A BMW K1600 Grand America | This Is A Monster!

- BMW K1600 - I rode a BMW K1600 Grand America tourer motorcycle. And it proved to be an absolute monster. The K1600 Grand America is the fully equipped tourer. It has the side boxes as well as the rear top box too. Whereas the K1600B is purely the bagger version but essentially is the same bike. But is the K1600 the right choice for me and does it suit my riding needs and wants at this stage? BMW make awesome motorcycles and their tourers are really great bikes. After riding the Grand America K1600, it was obvious there could be some issues and some things that I would have to work around too.

Great review, I love the rear lights on this one,the more layback appeal aesthetically, and the two chrome pipes.
But not being able to take out the saddle bags, and not being able to give the bike a different look on occasions, is a deal breaker..
The 2023 BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive will be the one I choose.
Thank you again, praises be to God. Your review was an amazing help.
Thanks for the video, I think the back tire is the problem on these bikes 🏍
It's just a Bagger with a top box ... I prefer the RT 👍
Hi mate ,In my honest opinion. Your going to have a hard time replacing the Sport Glide, Its pretty good, two bikes in one, I love the option to be able to remove the panniers and screen in seconds, it handles well for what it is. I have toured for thousands of miles, gone to the shops etc
Its probably one of the best allrounders I've ever had. Good luck finding your perfect partner.
Yes this is why I think it could be a non starter in the end
Even with all of my recalls and other issue that was repaired under extended warranty, (I wouldn't have repaired a minor oil leak that took several months for specialized parts) I still love my 2018 Grand America when I get it out on the open road.
I flashed the ECU to remove the neutered throttle and top speed limit and the stability doesn't bother me. I wonder how many people, if they hadn't heard about instability would have even noticed?
Guess what I heard about my Victory Cross Country and KTM 1290 Super Adventure S?
R1250R with a pair of pannier boxes and small sports screen on it. None of the bulk of the RT but just as practical. If I could bend my knees enough that’s what I would have rather than Fat Bob.
The RT has better wind protection and a bigger gas tank too, if that matters. Peg lowering kit can be done to either as well as bar risers. The RT has telelever front end too, which is a different feel. Some like it, some don’t. For me, the GSA would be best ergonomically, but the RT comes with bags already and has the electric windscreen. Also, the topcase I have for my old RT works on the new ones.
Years ago I rode my beloved EVO to a BMW airhead rally. Bruised and used airheads from everywhere. That was the land of Real Bikers.
I have the k1600b as replacement for de sport glide. The reason i have chosen the B is that the stability issue is less of an issue, although at 180km/h it's not as stable anymore, but i never drive this bike at those speeds in daily life. Btw the windscreen on your bike is not the original one it's the small one that comes with the k1600b. I never drive this bike in dynamic i find the gasrespons to nervous. With bags in de side cases there is no need to take the cases off , i never took the cases off my sport glide either.
Last week i drove my k1600b, into the Alps. I was unpleasantly surprised about the oil consumption 1 l per 1000km. This seems to be a common issue with this bike i'm not happy with. Which makes it unsuitable for long distance driving.
I still believe the HD roadking in the better bike for you style of riding.
Pre flash - I bumped the speed limiter all of the time. On the K1600 forums, there are guys that remove their top box and make it a quick-change style.
Last week there were some RV's doing 40 in a 55 holding up about 10 cars and refusing to pull over. TWO separate blockers. Yes, I bumped my speed limiter since I need a new map due to new factory software updates. This area on my busas, ZH2, etc, 110 would be a joke.
Hello from the Arizona Desert and hello officers!
I ride the 2018 GA and yes, you can remove the restrictions from the motor. I have removed mine and the bike has better performance and feels like an entirely different bike. I used BT Moto for that.
It's too bad this bike has so many drawbacks. It's so beautiful and I was considering it as my next bike. I have a GTL and I don't like the shape of my bags and the height of the back seat and top box. But my bag volume is definitely bigger than this bagger
I had one for around 6 months. Great looking bike, such a beast. I basically couldn’t handle the so low speed limiter, if you want to push it, you can’t and 100Mph on this beast isn’t that fast. You can top it out in third gear. Such a waste on that beautiful engine. I traded it for the GT version, so happy now, so much better. Especially being able to remove all the boxes. And yes it keeps pulling at 150Mph.
I personally didn't love the K16. Many demo days at work having to ride most BMW's. Ironically my favourite when taking customers out was the R Nine T Urban GS 1200 😁. That thing was just great fun, Easy to ride, plenty quick for the road, comfortable, sporting and always left me with a huge grin on my face. The K always had me working harder than I wanted. Navigating through traffic, parking and squeezing it into tiny areas wore thin very quickly... I'd take a Sports Glide 107 over a K as my one and only bike for sure.
Brent tune makes the tuner. With pipes and a stage 2 tune, it makes a the rear what stock does at the engine.
A friend of mine rode a GT flat out for a half hour in Nevada. He used to commute from show low AZ to San Jose CA. GPS verified. 157mph.
Seems to lack soul. Consider going stage 2 and an upgraded rear shock for the heroic Harley.
Yep this was the plan too
Fox 13.5" shock on my Sportglide has been a wonderful ride.@@RevelatorAlf
Great “sofa” without “soul” :) it has aerodynamic issues that’s why speed is limited and it cannot be fixed… without redesigned whole bike, how bmw made such mistake…
For me RT and for my riding style XR is the best from bmw lineup.
Yes totally. I cannot understand how they missed this
Hi Alf, it's just not it,...such a beemer! I now ride an Ultra Limited of '21. All the cases are on it and stay on it. Super handy and it doesn't bother you at all. I also bang between traffic jams with the greatest of ease here in NL.
if you already have not looked at this one...The Kawasaki Vulcan® 1700 Vaquero® cruiser may look like a custom V-twin bagger, but this motorcycle is in a class of its own. A roaring 1,700cc engine featuring advanced Kawasaki technology offers a smooth, reassuring ride. The blacked-out engine, distinct bodywork styling and select chrome accents create a unique and bold appearance. This may ruffle the feathers, but it is worth a look.
We don’t have that bike over here but yes I like the look of that for sure
The RT is the bike for you. 103 mph limit in the states. The top case causes the handling issues.
Not true. I have the bagger. Same issue
@@blackkitty1774 If the B has floorboards, the speed is limited to 110, but it also depends on the year. Prior to 2022, it was limited to 130.
@@my.motorradMadness. 🤦🏻♂️
All plastic with a transformer look... I prefer the look of a HD. I have read that BMW motorcycles have high warranty claims. And how many dealerships do they have? Not many compared to HD. Is it a high revving engine that requires high RPM to get power?
For me.. on an evaluation... 3 negatives is a pass.. Honda Gold Wing... Get spoiled Al... Even a used one. That motor is good for 100 + thousand trouble free miles.
Shiny side up
The K bike to get is the GT. It’s the lightest K and has detachable luggage. The Goldwing is a nice bike, but the ergonomics are different and it’s heavier. Luggage doesn’t come off easily either.
Try the triumph tiger 900 gt Pro. Think you might like it
32 valve $him$ to check/replace ... not for me.
It doesn't match your personality, Alf. I would never buy a bike that was not aerodynamic; what was BMW thinking?
The Sport side cases come off on my Pan America; but, I never remove them. There's no need.
The K1600 is over-powered for its aerodynamic handling.
