Once you have mastered this you will be able to start to learn strum patterns and chords, a combination of these two things will be the building blocks for you to learn more Ukulele moving forward. Welcome to the ultimate first Ukulele lesson, I hope you enjoy it! - Hudba
1:36 I've never heard anyone say that and it is SO important! I am going to share your video with my kids, Ty!
Yes! This changed everything for me!
Another of my Favorite teachers! I Love you Ms. B. Our ukulele community is so connected! I benefit So much from the techniques you have taught me, as well as Tyler. My thanks to you both, along with all my other teachers on You Tube! Shout out to Katie, Cynthia, Michael (R.I.P.), Andrew, Stu, Elise, John, Dylan, Scott, James, Jason, Jaytee, Ariel. There are so many people helping me learn the skills I need to succeed to play. I'm still a rank beginner, (I got my first ukulele April 27th), but thanks to you all, (and a daily practice regimen), I'm learning. Bless each and every one of you!

My fingers kept getting caught because of how my uke is made. The fretboard starts at the edge of the body, so there's this little gap between the hole and the board where I was strumming. Strumming on the fretboard now and no finger catching!! Thanks to this comment!

These pros make it look easy....
If you work really hard at it, it becomes easy. There is a time when I had no idea what I was doing, and it was very difficult for me as well, but I just kept chipping away at it until I could finally get it. You can do it it! Just stick with it.
Ya
After watching 10 videos, this is the first one that actually explains not to strum over the hole. So helpful!! Thanks!!

I'm still struggling with this a lot. I feel like my nails keep getting in the way and it changes the sound. My nails are no longer than my fingertips and I've even cut them to try helping. Is this only me? How can I fix it?
Lexxi Lawing dude, same. I found that the multi finger and thumb option helped especially when shyin away from the “hole”. (Just noticed this comment is 8 months old!! Sorry!!)
It happens for me too!

Thank you so much.
ALL of your lessons are awsome! Very good work! Hmm... You are looking like a Sandor Clegane who grew up in Disneyland instead of Westeros. Can you make a tutorial from the intro from Game of Thrones :)
weird… I didn't know how to strum before but now after watching this video, I realized that I did that strumming down with index finger and strumming up with my thump intuitive.
i got a ukulele like 4 hours ago and this helped a LOT thank you sm!!
That's what I'm talking about!

Omg I am strumming to the holes all my life
please do tutorial 'at my worst' pinksweat
Interesting point of view. There are so many techniques... yours catch my attention. I will try.
Oh... and I thought that putting egg boxes all over the walls would be efficient but it does NOT sound that efficient actually. :)
We got the same ukelele
Please do a tutorial of Rebeca sugar’s Time Adventure
Tyler; Bernadette placed a link to come to this site to learn how to strum. I found it very helpful. Keep up the good work! Also I am working on house of the rising sun chord melody. I really like the way you do it, and will stay with it until I get it.
Larry
Larry Brenner awesome my man! Bern dog is a class act for sure. Happy you could jam with us both! If you are like chord melody we have also done you are my sunshine, space oddity, man of constant sorrow, banks of the Ohio, yesterday, and some other tasty tracks too! Rock on man.
Yayyy!!! You're here!!! I love the way Tyler explains the strumming, I knew you'd like it too ;)
Ohmygoodness this helps so much. It started bleeding a little (only a little not much to worry about) because my finger was getting caught. The person I was watching was strumming his index finger over the hole so I kept trying to copy that 😂😂 but it feels much better on the fret board. Thank u!
Awesome! Happy strumming keep on rocking and rolling!
Smokin!
always wanted to play the ukulele. finaly went and got one but my stuby builders fingers keep getting in the way haha
I think I strum wayyyyy too hard and I cannot relax enough not to, it never sounds like anyone else's playing, and I know it isn't my instrument cause I've had someone who's a pro play it great :( I've had it for a year and it still doesn't sound any better
Help me I always getting my fingers catch in the string and it hurts
I just can t play whit all finger i dont know how to poision them
Your videos are great. Just ordered a Uke. I have no experience in any kind of music. lol. I saw you were wearing a Kansas City Royals shirt in one of your vids. You from KC?
Very observant, I was born in Emporia Kansas and the vast majority of both my mom's and dad's family is in and around the Kansas City area. I left there when I was 3 though. When I go back I do music workshops at Butler Music in Harrison Missouri, too! This summer fell through for obvious reasons but I should be around next summer. Let me know how I can help your journey!
im using my brothers phone- and my hands are ✨b r e a k i n g✨
I strum down with my thumb and up with my index. Can i just stay like that? I feel with i strum with just my index its hard to remember to strumming instead of having designated fingers for up and down strum. Plus when i only use index finger my finger always catches even over the fingerboard.
I am having a problem about switching chords :c
This is the video for you friend! czcams.com/video/5nD0IZutR4o/video.html
Use fingertips or finger nails?
I am only able to play the thumb one :( the other ones wont work
one of the first things he said you need is an attention span, but 2 minutes in I dozed off trying to improv a song on my own lmao
how about strumming with a PICK? i think i don't have problems strumming with fingers but i couldn't do it with a pick! any tips?
i have a soprano Uke ... the fret board literally stops at the top of the uke's body so all the strings are way higher, my fingers catch all the time, it's supposed to be entry level but honestly that makes it so much harder
How I do the same thing and mine sounds so different. It’s stung btw
Is there a specific way your suppose to hold the cords like with c how much pressure would u put on it because I’ll do it really lightly but I’ll get nothing from the c
Make sure e your holding it down completely to get the actual cord and no fret buzz
Hiya my name is Angel and I was wondering if TVs was a way I could play the ukulele with one hand? I had brain cancer when I was 5 and was left with a left sided weakness and registered partially sighted. Any ideas?
Optic nadeshot but with long hair
Do you strum with the side of your finger or a bit angled so it’s more on the top of the nail?
The side where the nail and the finger come together.
I need to learn how to chuck....
Just got a uke 2 days ago and holy crap my fingers hurt so bad. Do you have any tips to stop that from happening.
Is that a concert uke
the where to strum seemed to be what i was missing. none of the other videos mentioned that
Cooper Snell awesome you got it!
Help! I keep getting my index finger and all my fingers caught on the strings going up, my thumb going up is fine, but i can’t do fingers up at all. What’s the trick?
i is strugglin' with the up strum :'( that's where my fingers get caught any advice is welcome
Are your finger nails going across the strings during the multi-finger strums? Or is it more of the tip of the fingers?
It would be the nail, I'm not so much getting the fleshy part.
TenThumbs Productions okay! Thank you very much- it really helped! :)
TenThumbs Productions that helps knowing that! tried it with my nail more and my fingers didn’t catch ... thank god
Someone help me!!! Whenever I don’t use a pick my fingers always catch it the strings or bend and it’s never as powerful and vibrant as when I use a pick
What type of Ukulele is this
I get worried about scratching my ukulele, do you rub your finger along the body of the uke before it his the string, and is your nail touching the uke? Is it common to smack the sides of the neck or body with your finger as you strum? I just find myself worrying I'm gonna scratch the wood or something.
How not to make it get caught in strings when I use index? It hurts af
Does this technique work on guitar as well?
No nearly as well, the guitar requires techniques that are slightly more forceful. Are you just starting with guitar? Do you play with a pick or your fingers?
