Saltaire is one of my favourite places. Although I live down south, I always visit Saltaire and the mill when I’m ‘up north’. For me it’s a special place because of the legacy and ethos of Titus Salt. What a great man. Visiting Salts Mill always invokes a warm feeling in my heart and restores my faith in human nature. Long live Salts Mill and I hope it continues to prosper and provides joy for eternity!
I live in saltaire and can personally say that saltaire is a beautiful place and has a very interesting history
It does, there's a lot more to come too.
Great stuff. Feels like so long ago we did this 👍
It does. I think it was June/July. What a long day that was. And I was so nervous having you with me lol
I remember seeing the first film and great to see this one.
@@AdventureMe Nervous? Not wanting to let Martin down? Martin has a natural way about him that makes me feel I can trust him even though I am not likely to meet him.
Martin's everywhere
My grandma and her aunts worked at salts Mill and lived in salts houses. My dad said he was really good to his workers.
He apparently was yes
Love Saltaire, the main reason why it remains beautiful is because home owners aren’t allowed to modernise with UPVC windows and doors, it’s kept with original features. Great vlog
Yes that's true.
I used to live in Saltaire. Good place. One thing, the station building disappeared for the good reason that the station was closed for many years, until WY Metro reopened it. Don’t have dates to hand but was closed for about 25 years.
Such a shame, they should have just left it alone. Beautiful place though.
Indeed. There was a lovely LMS cast iron sign still in place during the time it was closed.
It was deep in undergrowth. I was often tempted to drag it away.
The station closed in 1965 and was demolished in 1970. It reopened in 1984, though as a modern un-staffed station with just wooden platforms and shelters. To fit in with the historic area at least it got stone waiting shelters instead of the typical bus shelter type buildings of the 80s.
Thank you so much, there is so much of Saltaire that I still have to explore.
Manufacturing is the key to a healthy economy.
My beloved wife ❤ & I visited Saltaire some years ago & it was absolutely amazing, so very tranquil & clean too. Unlike SO many towns & cities nowadays, there are tower blocks & council estates dotted around but my wife & I don't even recall seeing any phone mast tower's, blocks of flats or fly tipping spots. It was amazing & we went into a shop & when we asked how much the bill was, to our absolute astonishment, the nice lady informed us that you put however much money 💰 you want to pay.into a tin box!! We both thought that the lady in question was joking, but she wasn't. I was born & raised in East London but I'd absolutely love to settle down with my wife ❤ in Saltaire. Just totally adore the town's rustic aesthetic & beautiful scenery. 😏 👍
What a treat to see a gorgeous summer's day on a dreary damp January evening. Cheers Darren. Just what I needed 👍
Cheers mate. More summer vids coming this month.
Thanks Darren that was worth waiting for. Glad Martin enjoyed it too.
Thanks nicola. He had a great time.
Thanks for the video and chat with Martin. Never heard of this town before. Fantastic place to visit. Cheers Darren.
This is absolutely brilliant. A most enjoyable vlog. The village is so clean and presentable. Thank you for sharing this little jewel with us. Amazing filming.
Thanks Shirley. I'm longing for summer already.
Hi Darren. I live in Shipley, Saltaire is a beautiful area for exploring in the summer with the park included, so I know the area really well. Thanks for the video mate :) keep it up!
Cheers mate. It was a regular for me as a kid.
Great video thanks for the history lesson. Love Saltaire so much. Will be staying there next month for third time in three years. Coming over from Shropshire and believe me, I can't wait. So much to see in surrounding areas too. I love West Yorkshire. Look forward to watching a few more of your vids Darren.
Thanks Steve. Hope you have a great time. I'll be back there soon to make a series on something.
Brings back memories, although the mills were looking very derelict in the 1980´s . Great to see them in such good repair.
Yes it's very well kept now with it being a world heritage site.
Really enjoyed this video and the history you provide. Looking forward to seeing more!
Awesome, thank you! More to come.
Great vlog there,I live opposite Salts Mill and kind of take it for granted what is around me. When the world gets back to some sort of normality you will have to visit again in September when the Saltaire Festival is back on.
Darren, picking away at your early work---why is it that whenever I watch one of your videos I think "What a great place to live." You have so much history around you. This was a fine watch.... Thanks. "rollercoaster"
Great video, thank you. Brought back a lot of memories, I worked in the office pool at Salts mill, danced on Saturday night at the Victoria hall and had my wedding reception at the Victoria hall. Lived in Shipley on Hirstwood road loved going to Roberts Park and Shipley Glen, cost 1d to ride the tram.
Thanks for watching.
Wow, I've been through Saltaire on the train never seen the village of Saltaire, another excellent video Darren thank you for filming here, sir Titus certainly looked after his workers in what he did and gave to them, I'm certainly going to have to have a look at Saltaire in more depth when this pandemic is over, love anything historical and also the information you give, stay safe and keep up the good work with your vlogs Darren
Thanks Graeme. It's definitely worth a visit. In summer especially.
Brilliant video love walking through saltaire and taking the little one to see santa at Shipley glen tramway....the volunteers do a brilliant job
They do, it's a shame it wasn't running on that day. I'm sure I will get back and cover it.
Very interesting Darren. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce this.
I'd love to see have seen inside the mill, they do fascinate me.
How about doing some videos on the mills in Leeds please.
How
All coming soon hopefully. I couldn't get in Salts as it was closed due to the pandemic.
@adventureme Thank you for sharing a spectacularly well researched piece, I very much want to visit Saltaire now!
Thank you very much. You need to come visit
Great little tour and great to see you in 2021.
Thanks.
Thank you for showing us around I'm from leeds and passed this town many times next time I will definitely stop and take a look around I adore my county !
Yes you should. Go in summer. Its beautiful.
Like others here, I have been to Saltaire and I most fortunate to have gone up the Shipley Glen Tramway....it was so interesting. Thank you for the memories.
Beautiful place. Great vid and history. Thank you.
Thanks for taking us along, very interesting buddy. 👍🙂
Thanks mate.

Was that possibly the quickest reply I've ever had 🤔 🙂👍
A lot of these model villages didn't have a pub because the mill owner disapproved of alcohol. Bournville still doesn't have one!
On the other hand, Styal in Cheshire does have a pub. Samuel Greg, the mill owner, reckoned that his workers were going to drink anyway so he may as well have a pub in the village so he'd get the profits!
Thanks once again guys, really enjoyed this.
Our pleasure!
I've been on the Shipley railway many years ago, seem to remember there was a shop at the bottom that sold old postcards. Great photography Darren.
Thanks Darren for reminding me how much I liked (and miss) Saltaire. I used to live in Baildon, over the river and up the hill. Fond memories. Echo the comments already made about seeing some summer sun in the depths of winter 🙂
Yes, it cheered me up seeing it too. More summer vids coming this month.
great video
my great grandparents both worked at Crow Nest Titus"s home, maid and gardener, from what my father tells me is titus salt was a great man
There also a couple of underground tunnells. There one near the top of the stairs at the mill. There some big black doors and he made that so his workers could go straight to the canteen without having to cross the road. There’s another one from Victoria hall under the road and into the collage. The opened them up a few years ago durin Saltaire festival for tours
Drive through here most days, or did when I was allowed to go to work in Keighley!
Good work again mate
Cheers gavin.
Good to see a decent tour round this fantastic village, really interesting - a bit longer would have been even better!!! 👍🏻
Thanks bob. Plenty more to come from here so don't worry.
Brilliantly filmed and well presented thank . Keith from Manchester.
Thanks Keith.
A place I need to visit, always enjoy your videos well done, and Mr Zero put an appearance too 😂😂😂, I find your disused railway videos particularly of interest ax I lived in Chesterfield for many years back in the eighties and was virtually surrounded by them.
Thank you! 😃 Glad you enjoyed. We had a great day.
Hi Darren just watched your video on saltaire really was interesting nice sunny day i remember having chips near the Leeds Liverpool canal many years ago What memories you take me back to thanks for the fantastic videos I'll keep watching though the year and fingers crossed it gets better take care Kevin
Thanks Kevin. Hopefully.
Fascinating place, such a beautiful spot
It is stunning. Especially in summer.
Great video as always mate
Thanks 👍
The station was closed as part of Dr Beechings railway cut backs in the 1960’s. My Dad worked for British Rail back then. I spent hours on that station as a small child. Thank you for bringing back some very happy memories. ❤️❤️
Thanks Valerie.
A place thats on my bucket list. Thank you Darren.
Well worth it.
Fabulous. Love the video
Thanks mate
Goosebumps! and again Tartarian the forbidden history. I also share this broadcast on facebook. (I've been on Tartatarian for 7 years now and I can't wait to go to England.) There are a few sites on facebook looking for just these broadcasts. I will put it there again. ok i will continue watching THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Thanks for sharing
Wonderful video about a place I love. I went there for the 1st time in 1970. My friend John lives nearby (Shipley). Hope this covid nightmare ends soon, I miss my annual trip to this part of Yorkshire. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video, of a beautiful place. Inside the Mill is very interesting if you ever get a chance to explore.
We were hoping to film inside for this video, but the virus put a stop to that. Plenty of other times I suppose.
nice chippy at Roberts Park..........great work pal
Really really good What a lovely place. Very interesting thank you 👍
Thanks mate
Love the video keep up the great work
Thanks! Will do!
Shipley Glen. My grandma used to take us out at weekends back in the 60's from Bradford to Saltaire and up the little tramway. Great days.
Always a favourite day out for me as a kid.
Keep passing through Saltaire but I never stop there, may have a ride there on train in next few weeks xx
I seem to recall from my school days (I went to school in Saltaire) hearing something about how Titus Salt used to pay his workers in his "own" currency, which could only be spent in shops, etc that he owned thus recouping some of the wages he paid out. Could be an old wives tale, can't find a record of that online. Interesting none the less. Great video, really enjoyed it.
Yes I had heard that, but don't know how true it is.
Enjoyed the video
The House on the right with the blue door is the one my family raised us in. My bedroom was the one above the door.
Must have been great living in one of those houses.
A wonderful trip, discovery in your company, and quite a strong emotion for my Argentinian husband seeing the two alpacas ^_^
Brilliant. Hope it brought him some home comforts.
The mill was known as the "Palace of Industry" and it was reputed that the length of its annual production of alpaca cloth would stretch to Argentina!
Very interesting and the sun was shining 😎
Yes it was.
Great! Ever though of covering the old Crossgates to Wetherby train line (if not already done). There are still some remains on Leeds Road near to the junction of Smeaton Approach of an old train bridge.
Eventually, but not filmed yet.
Beautiful village. Will have to get over there at some point.
Definitely worth a day out. Lots to do in normal circumstances of course.
I'm getting a pretty big list of places to see when allowed :)
Have you filmed in Haworth before? I can’t see on your channel but that would make a great video :) loved this, beautiful Saltaire
Not yet no. I have plans to though.
Really enjoyed your look at Saltaire. I've recommended it to my sister who is staying there for a weekend next month. I like to highlight my area of Bradford which is Low Moor & Wyke on my channel which you may find of interest especially the story of the Low Moor Munitions Company Explosions of 1916.
I'll be covering that don't worry
Good video Darren 👍
Thanks 👍
Stunning. How did you manage to sit on this for so long? I used to take my kids there for days out years ago. Brought back many memories. Stunning in 4K too. Cheers Darren.
Glad you enjoyed it. I was saving it for a rainy day, or a cold and miserable january.
Looks well Darren especially the wide screen panoramic sweeps, I look forward to a follow up video featuring the mill if you return, in my last comment I mentioned the subterranean reservoir under the mill, if you could gain permission the mill would make a very interesting explore video. Regards. Richard.
Yes. I did email them. But no luck as I think they are closed for covid. Its something I will keep pushing to do.
I had a first date once at that Boathouse pub haha - lovely area, one of the better parts of Bradford!
It certainly is. I had a date there years ago too.
Nice to see Martin on the correct side of the Pennines 😄
Excellent. Meriden, Kansas
Thanks Jerry.
Last visited cpl years ago beautiful place . Nice video thanks Cheers Rob
Thank You.
It is a beautiful place to chill take walks I’ve been many times I thoroughly recommend anyone to visit it
It is great.
Great video. Where you aware there use to be a theme park at the top of Shipley glen tram way which until 2008 had a grade 2 listed ride still there which was delisted so they good take it down
Yes I did. My childhood playground. Coming soon on the channel.
I grew up not far away in the Batley, Dewsbury area my dads side all lived in the Birkenshaw village (now uber expensive) and my most memorable times were the annual walk over Baildon Moor into Ilkley. I guess it was 8 miles or so. The walk came off the moor by the Roman bath house then the train ride back to Bradford. All great stuff when your a lad of 8+. It was a general tradition to do the moor walk and I think it was easter or whit Monday. It was generally a family get together. Took the glen railway up to the top. A house cafe and small funfair was there. There were peacock's strutting around, then the shorter walk on the escarpment rocks to a pub where the adults had liquid refreshments before the start of the moor ramble proper. Oh happy days back then in the 50's I hope this post stirs up memories in other folks.
I have similar memories of the glen funfair etc, but this would have been the 80's. Thanks for sharing your story.
@@AdventureMe oh thanks matey, pleasant memories from back then!
I haven't been to that neck of the woods for years so I don't know if the tea rooms and funfair still exists. I know I bought an old caravan on Dobrudden farm overlooking Shipley Glen before the farm sites became sofisticated with running water and electric and proper 🚻 😂
I left Yorkshire in my early 20's and eventually ended up in Martins land but that's a story for another day!
@@douglasthompson296 No sadly they don't. It closed around 2004. The tramway is still there and there is a tea shop at the top. But that's it.
Hi I'm loving your videos ,have you ever heard of the ice house in Middleton woods? I've lived in the area all my life and only just heard about it any chance of a film about it?
Hi David. I can do better than that. I already have a video on it. Look for "Middleton Park tramways". I cover it extensively in that.
Not open to the general public, but several years ago I was able to go into the original Board Room used by Salt and his directors. It was just as he had left it!
Very nice video
Thanks Ronnie.
This is my Kilroy moment, i was there before you and Martin. we visited many years ago while staying in nearby Shipley.
Hope you enjoyed it. It was my childhood playground.
@@AdventureMe This was a great break for us, the canals, the locks the steam railway at Keighley and Saltaire topped it all off.Even had a meal in the pub, The Boathouse overlooking the river. Where we live in Co. Durham most industrial buildings etc. are destroyed by the council as if they are embarassed by them. Off the top of my head can`t remember the name of the stair case locks just up the road towards Skipton.
I've been on the Shipley glen tramway, both up and down. As far as I could tell, it's counter balanced twin cars connected by cable are controlled by the electric gear at the top manned by an operator. When in motion the machinery makes a loud whining noise until it stops, then all is quiet. At the top there used to be some amusements, dodgems etc ( not sure if they're still there ) as it's many years ago since we went there.
There's a cheap apartment block and some mews housing where the "amusements" were - sad really.
The amusements was already disused when I moved to this general area in the early 1990s. It was all demolished some years ago, and replaced by housing.
I love Saltaire, I just wish it wasn't so expensive to live there! Still, it's only 15 minutes' train ride from Leeds or a stroll along the towpath from Shipley. A friend bought a house there recently and pre-Covid, we used to visit every September for the festival which is very well organised and attended. The Hockney gallery in the mill is lovely too and the boathouse is a great place for getting slowly sozzled by the river on a sunny afternoon. It's a pity about the bridge (and the huge trees outside the institute, though I know not everyone agrees) but it's good to hear they're going to uncover more of the cobbles - I think they should do this everywhere as they're hard wearing, much nicer to look at than tarmac and act as a natural speed restriction.
Yes the bridge would be great if they could re-instate it.
It’s not expensive to live there. I recently moved from Leeds as it’s cheaper.
Just a five minute drive and never had a look! Must get this done once this lockdown is over..
You should, well worth it in spring/summer.
Lovely weather my dear 🤔 you boys didnt do this last week. Its a very nice place and its a few years since i last visited so its going on my list for this year 🤞.
Very true. It was filmed in June I think.
Bet you stopped at the boathouse, was there last summer, lovely place.
Sure did
Sir Titus Salt also named the streets in Saltaire after members of his family, and the tramway was first a toboggan ride but was closed and changed to a tramway after a bad accident. Great video 👍
Thanks Gary. Yes i will be covering the toboggan, although i'm told it wasn't where the tramway is now. That already existed, it was further along the glenn.
@@AdventureMe the hut at the bottom of the tram is a little museum with lots of info. Loved taking the kids to the fair at the top, sadly no longer there now.
The tramway and toboggan ride were on two different sites.
Darren, you must have filmed this the day you did Milner field! The station building must have been taken down when Saltaire ceased to be a station in 1965. It was on the Midland railway, You can also wee where the footbridge used to be, there are still remnants of the plinth, but I beileve the original platforms were wood as they are today, and they were just removed.
It became a station again in 1984 when it gained World Heritage status.
I often ask people this pair of questions. How many model villages can you name in England. They all get Bournville in Birmingham, and port Sunlight in Liverpool, most struggle with saltaire in Bradford (well except locals) The second question is which of those 3 cities actually had 2 model villages?
The answer is Bradford, because there was Ripleyville in West Bowling. Even though there is only one terrace left!
Rumour has it those lions were considered too small for Trafalgar Sq, and so the smaller ones went to Saltaire!
There is actually a Saltaire in Long Island New York State!
Yes we filmed on the same day. Thanks for your knowledge, some of that I didn't know.
I grew up in Cottingley just up the road so we learnt all about Saltaire at school. I hope you stopped in Fannys for a pint.
Brilliant, no it was closed.
Ah yeah damn covid.
Hi Darren. Its a pity you couldn't get to walk through the foot tunnels. I've only seen them on photographs but they look quite interesting.
I'm working on it for the future.
Fascinating, you should have referred to the houses of the workers, the large buildings at the end of the terraces were the foreman's house.
Nevertheless superb video showing g the wonderful architecture.
Nice one Darren.
Good point! Thanks mate.
1) Video credits and THANK YOU'S - incorrect spelling. No apostrophe needed. Should say THANK YOUS or YOUs - small S.
2) great to see sunshine and t-shirts on a freezing cold Winter morning. Thanks for sharing and showing this part of Yorkshire. Shipley Glen and tram way, especially.
Thanks for pointing that out.
@@AdventureMe You're welcome Darren. I'm an English and Dyslexia specialist, amongst other things. So, always happy to point out solutions to errors.
I live in Saltaire!
beautiful place ive seen that martin somewhere before lol.when you did your livestream i asked about a collab with martin the whitewicks and nodrog and gordon was the only one to pick it up but it did not get answered
We talked about it earlier. We said a mega collaboration would be good.
@@AdventureMe if this cr p ever goes away that would be awesome for all channels
At last, been waiting ages for this. Great video, what a fantastic place, I grew up around there and it's improved in leaps and bounds since 70s. I'll be going back there some time.
It has, much more like it used to be now.
The streets were named after family members!
Yes I forgot to mention that.
There's an old urban myth about the street names. Where they ran out of family names, it was suggested that Lower and Upper were added. Eg. Lower Darren Road or Upper Martin Lane. The urban myth is that there's an Upper Fanny Street. There isn't. It just sounds funny to imagine it might have been considered. I was told that, after the village was allowed to sell off buildings and a pub opened, it was called Fanny's.
I cannot believe this is near BRADFORD 🙉 😂😂😂
Bradford was the richest city in the north back in those days.
Lovely vid, thank you. You missed out the street names, literally the names of people who were important in Titus’s life!
Yes. I knew on the day too. Just forgot to cover it. So much information to tell.
@@AdventureMe it’s an incredible place.... like you say there’s lots to it! Great vid!
I'll be back for much more.
I lived here for 4 years...the tiny worker house my poor ass lived in was worth it though to get to walk by the canal and to Roberts park every day.
Yes I bet that was a nice comfort.
@@AdventureMe for sure, created some amazing memories for my family...especially my little boy who was born into that house.
My mother worked in Salts Mill on leaving school until she got married in 1935. She married a Lancashire boatman so that makes me a Lancs/Yorks Hybrid - foot in both camps so to speak!
Best of both worlds, but more Yorkshire lol.
Yes John, your better half is definitely Yorkshire and you know it !
been to saltaire a million times but i didn't know about the alpacas!!
I didn't until I saw the statue, so I googled it.
Hi martin 👋👋
hard to believe i here so long ago
Any plans for a Bingley vid?
Hopefully mate yes.
Not cobbles they are sets, it's a common mistake because people tend to say "Cobbled streets". S
o much more to explore so thank you for your visit.
Thanks Olive, I can never tell the difference.
@@AdventureMe Cobbles are rounded like pebbles on the beach, sets are rectangular man made.
Please do Garforth old railway 👍
I will. Hopefully this summer.
